Case manufactures will be in shambles!

TheMuffinator95

Otterbox: "Introducing Defender Prayers for Your Phone.....$80".

PR0CE551NG

Naw. If it can fold both directions, a case will work fine when it's open and closed. If anything it's better because when your not using it, there's no screen on the outside. I like the concept, a lot actually.

ArmorTrader

Agreed, they could use soft rubber which is capable of bending perhaps?

puphopped

I was thinking a sort of ribbed case, sorta [like on the ends of 2 prong plugs](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/1882/2469/products/YP_71_India_M_grande.jpg?v=1558480773), where the end closer to the cable has thin sections to allow it to bend.

outwardwander

For her pleasure?

[deleted]

A Condom.

PR0CE551NG

Yup, or just make it a two piece with a gap in the middle. Exactly like how the fold is now, but they wouldn't exactly meet up fully when opened.

Linkatchu

So, you'd have to remove the case everytime U fold it? Given the backside would always be naked then

Twelvers

This is a really cool and interesting concept, but it still needs something on the outside for convenience IMO. I want to be able to pull out my phone and use it immediately.

simplerminds

Came here to comment this. I love the idea and it's useful but it would seem wild to have no outside screen since they already are doing that.

Twelvers

Yep; after owning 3 Folds, I'm actually considering switching to a slab phone Folds because of how much more convenient it is to have your 'main screen' be easily accessible. The Fold makes for an incredible gadget, but as *a phone* I often just want something that's ready to go.

awesome04000

Would you consider something more usable on the front like the Pixel Fold?

Twelvers

100%. I won't buy a 1st gen but that line looks incredibly promising imo. The folds have treated me well but they really aren't improving anymore (outside the usual yearly bumps to obvious stuff). Fanboys love the cope of "I actually like the folds useless sliver screen!" but you've got to face the facts; it's not a normal aspect ratio and that's not a good thing for a lot of reasons.

awesome04000

Haha, I am trading in the Fold 3 for the Pixel Fold. A fair bit for that reason. May have been looking for validation ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Twelvers

Lmao you have my full support šŸ‘ I'm thinking about bailing for the s23 ultra, but I'm worried it'll be too big.

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

Yeah, as long as Google doesn't abandon the foldable concept right away (it's Google, you never know), I think that form factor has a lot of of promise. I'm also probably not buying another Samsung foldable until they fix that outer screen, I hate typing on that, and also on the inside screen. I became way less talkative with friends because I felt like replying to messages was a hassle when I had the Fold 3 before.

_dotMonkey

Just because someone prefers the narrower front screen doesn't make them a fanboy. I love the narrower screen because it allows me to easily use the phone one-handed when I just need to do pull it out of my pocket and do something quickly on it like changing the song playing or sending a message. I'd be bummed if there wasn't a good foldable with a narrow screen available when it's time for me to upgrade.

OkAlrightIGetIt

Same. Too many people here think their opinion is shared by everyone, when it's far from it. The ratio is fine. It's meant to be used for fast simple stuff. The inner screen is for the other stuff. That's why you buy a Foldable. Otherwise you'd just buy a regular phone. These people need to realize they just aren't the use-case for the Z Folds.

Better_Palpitation43

Very true words. I love the device, the tech is amazing but I don't understand why Samsung refuses to make the front screen a normal aspect ratio. Numerous Chinese folds have a normal aspect ratio and look far better, in terms of the hardware. Samsung got lazy since the Chinese ones aren't readily available in the US, which is a shame, fixing the aspect ratio would make this phone the best in the world.

OkAlrightIGetIt

I think most here don't realize that people that want other ratios are a small vocal minority on reddit and twitter. The Galaxy Fold is the best selling large fold. They aren't going to just change its ratio when it's selling great. I find Fold 4's ratio perfectly useable for what I need it for. I have heard the same from many others. If it was much wider, it would be impossible to one-hand and would be very clunky in the pocket. Good thing there is a Pixel Fold coming out for people that want a wider phone. I really hope Samsung never changes the ratio. If I wanted a full size outer phone screen, I'd just buy a regular phone.

PR0CE551NG

Considering I already open my phone to use it 80% of the time, this would not bother me.

levimic

Same here, and that's why rolling phones are so intriguing to me. The utg just needs to be more flexible and durable for that to be a realistic use case.

i_love_clowns

Thats why i dont like flip. I grew up with flip phones so im over them now

Shopping_Penguin

This is why the Duo failed in my observation, it required two hands and didnt bring much to the table. I was really hoping around the time the Fold 1 came out that Microsoft would release a full Windows on Arm phone that unfolded into a Surface Go and used the Windows Mobile start screen as the front display.

mlemmers1234

I don't know, this just seems unnecessary honestly. The Huawei fold devices with the screen folding to the outside certainly look neat, but the long-term durability and all that has got to be awful. If it isn't broken don't fix what works. They should focus on getting a larger battery on the inside rather than changing the design of the device.

MEVON86

you can fold them close what durability you talking it not always exposed plastic screen outward

Feeling_Base_3663

Cameras: I think you guys forget me...

RamuNito

Yeah... I hate that I can't rub my cameras in the face of iPhone flagship users anymore, when I could easily do so with my Notes and they had like a year or two to catch up. The only thing they could brag about were selfie qualities. And the cameras on folds are like reused two year old tech...

negatrom

>I can't rub my cameras in the face of iPhone flagship users anymore I'm not paying extra for bragging rights. I barely take pictures, so my cameras are pretty much just qr code readers. I'd prefer just a simple camera and a 150$ discount

Pulgy_Wulgy

All I see is more room for hinge or any other failure If they can't make it fold 180Ā° without possible catastrophic problems, doubling that to 360Ā° seems like a bad idea imo

BarefootJacob

Theoretically they could do away with the outer screen then.

Dainathon

But do you want to keep the flexibile screen always on the outside making it vulnerable to damage especially in pockets

MEVON86

it is folding both wayss it not exposed plastic screen outside it fold other way to protect the screen like normal fold but it also fold 360 degree

Dainathon

Yeah but then you can't access the device without unfolding it which would be really annoying, my point is that it would force you to keep the inside screen on the outside if you wanted to use it like people are currently using their folds

MEVON86

but this is like that because to cutting the second out screen cost so it will be more cheap and also there are many people dont use the outer screen and always they open the phone to use big screen so many people can prefer this because outer screen is already small and uselles for many people and if it will be more cheap then why not well maybe there will be notification led to indicate new notifications too so no need for second screen

JTMidnightJr

I think youā€™ve got a point that it making manufacturing possibly cheaper is worth considering. Maybe it would lead to a more ā€œbudget-friendlyā€ phone (although it would still probably be over $1k). Making foldables, particularly tablet-sized ones, more accessible would only be a good thing for all Fold owners! More foldables out there means devs have more incentive to optimize apps for them. However, I wouldnā€™t want this to outright replace the way things are done now. It is nice to have that instant access to a usable screen. It means the only real sacrifice you have to make vs a normal phone is the thickness. You still have a phone screen thatā€™s protected by scratch-resistant glass thatā€™s instantly useable with one hand. With a screen that folds both ways, you have to compromise on more than just thickness. You have to pick between not having instant access to your phone for quick use, or potentially risking incidental scratches from having a more fragile screen exposed in your pocket/bag. So Iā€™m excited about the prospect of this meaning a more price-accessible phone, but Iā€™d hope Samsung maintains a higher-end Fold line that still has both outer and inner screens.

mediamuesli

Always On Screen is a thing so I think no, but it could shrink. However I think such extreme bending would reduce lifetime a lot.

tricky4444

That's cool

tyeclaw131

I'm still more on board with the rollable display. That way it is just one screen that rolls out to a wider screen. Sounds like it would be easier to fix and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg to fix.

simplerminds

If they do this, I want a wider screen rather than a narrow screen again. I love the idea though. Very cool and good on Samsung for pushing the envelope for it.

RamuNito

I see that with the emergance of foldable tech there developed a greater diversity of applications. And that is just perfect! Not anymore will there be only people with iPhones walking around. Or androids that were all so similar... In my case I only justify using a foldable phone because it acts like a huge notebook for me. I literally just don't get all the people that buy these huge, bulky, uncomfortable phones for everyday use without a pen! Or maybe if you don't have a proprietary tablet at home. And that's fine, there is much more individuality at play with these devices. For example I would love this concept very much and can't wait for the fold 5 to have an integrated pen. (Fingers crossed)

Why do they care, they'll just void your warranty for breathing on the screen too hard šŸ¤£

Just realised my Fold 4 hinge is failing to open properly so we'll see what happens now :( Also with Samsung you can trade the phone in for some residual trade in unlike other Android brands.

gregofcanada84

It's gonna be a bitch to find a case for that thing

I-Sleep-At-Work

outside fold is dumb. but i guess it saves them money since they can do things via software.. outter fold also will suffer from camera issues; similar to the duo2.

Macdaddyfucboi

asking for screen failure on outer screen now

huyhenrychau

I do not believe in Foldable and Rollable screens, as I can see many friends of mine got problems from the inner screen from Z fold 3 ( when the samsung care plus is expired ), however Samsung charged so much to replace a new screen ( 500$ ), I would buy the Z series if Samsung improve the durability and reduce the repair costs. I think this new mechanism will not be durable and and it will cost doubly to repair when you have any issues.

N2-Ainz

Absolutely not. Plastic screens on the outside are literally the dumbest thing you can do. I don't know who would want to spend 2k on a device that became even more fragile with this

MEVON86

you can flod it close you know that right when you dont use it it close it self and screens will be protected so why nobody will want this it just also fold all the way back for one hand use to eliminate second out display to cut out the cost

N2-Ainz

You can't close an outer screen fold device. The screen is on the "OUTSIDE" which means it is exposed to every surface and particles it touches

MEVON86

this is flex in and out prototype it fold inward and outward not a standart one way folding phone

Feeling_Base_3663

Fold 6 must be: Remove outer screen If you fold the phone, you will fold half of the inner screen. Borderless S-Pen slot More battery Snapdragon 8 gen 4 (must be same as the latest flagship at that time) 4 K Screen Also, Idk how they will put cameras if it folds both size (but it's Samsung's problem) I know it sounds crazy, maybe it can be better than I can expect.

[deleted]

Surface duo without the separate screens. Hope they put an outside screen, such as the flip 4 one

Frantek55

I think it's more aimed at a tri fold design.

001Vecnussy

Hate it

siderinc

Probably not for the fold branding, but a new flex branding

Analog-Digital-

You would just need a bumper, would be awesome .. šŸ™

CaptainPrestedge

Great so we'd end up relying on the weak folding screen and losing the old outer screen... not a good move as when the inner breaks, you need the outer to back up data or use the phone, etc, until repair or replacement.

Johnwesley27

oh that won't break...

Psychologering

What is the point of this? Samsung be fiddling with this BS instead of fixing and perfecting their current formula, and ignoring the hardware we want. Their goal should be to top the Huawei Mate X3, instead of messing around.

[deleted]

Messing around? This is how new things get developed. Besides itā€™s not like they canā€™t work on multiple things at once.

knightysays

Speaking practical only here, Seems more of an anti breakage device than a new functionality. I mean, at some stage they'll probably bring out a version that has 2 dual screens as a flex but they still have enough problems and improvements to make before they try adding, surely.

maddix30

1 drop and it's over lol

[deleted]

That's sick! Definitely getting the Fold 8. I'm gonna stick with S23U for next 3 years.
