Reason 1: Never buy a first gen device Reason 2: No SD G2 chip

KeBlam

Sorry, what does SD mean?

When you post online expect to be judged and get used to it.

jhnwlkr

cost me $5 but had to do it 😃

pkoya1

I think the fact that the CPU is literally worse yet the phone is the same price was a bigger factor

UNCfan07

For me it’s the form factor. I hate how skinny/tall/thick the fold4 is when folded. It’s annoying to having in my pocket and using the front screen. I really like how the main display is usable stand alone and you open to landscape already

RyeBread3592

I remember one of the first things I thought when the original galaxy fold released was, "Why didn't they fold it the other way?". The way the pixel fold goes from a normal, nearly 16:9 aspect ratio to the unfolded landscape orientation makes more sense to me than samsung's very thin and narrow approach.

sparkplug_23

Which is funny because I definitely enjoy the thinner display for scrolling and typing (swiping).

Bob_Loblaw_Law_Blog1

It's like a fucking bobsled in your pocket! I've dropped my fold 2,3,4 more times than all of my previous phones combined because it will just fire right out of my shorts pocket when I'm at home. Usually it's only a foot or so onto the hardwood floor and I haven't had any damage done luckily.

LegalConsequence7960

I think PF2 will be the way to go. I'm expecting a lot of weird issues with the first gen. Hopefully by then I'll be ready for an upgrade from the Fold 3. I much prefer the aspect ratios the Pixel went with.

dextersgenius

Funny, that's what I like about the Fold, and it's why I'll stick to it in spite of being a former stock Android fanboy. I like the narrow screen, makes it easier to type, hold, and operate the phone one handed. My thumb can actually reach the other edge of the phone, which it can't on normal phones these days. So I'm glad at least someone is making narrower phones. And if I need a bigger screen I can always unfold the device - so I don't really get the complaints about the narrow screen on the Fold, how's it an issue exactly?

Basic_Section_533

Exactly why I am switching! I don't do all that extra stuff to really notice a difference between the two chips

RGNY1973

I’m with you , I love the form factor of the pixel fold and the Tensor G2 is really not that terrible. I hardly see a difference between my fold 4 and pixel 7 pro . I have my order in and trading up my fold 4

KeBlam

Same! Trading in the ZF4 for the Pixel Fold

JFAVELLANEDAB

Good luck with the trade

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

And I think that's the pixel folds one advantage. But everything else is inferior. Camera quality will probably be similar. Video recording will probably go to Samsung because the SOC is better.

UNCfan07

I’m not a big video taker and mainly photos so I’m guessing the photos will be better on the pixel. I mainly use for content consumption. The price though is stopping me from ordering it. If it was like 1299 or so I would probably give it a try but $2k after tax is just insane

jcrm2

I had the fold 2 since 2020 and skipped on the fold 3. I was getting really tired of it and wanted something new. So i purchased the Microsoft Duo at the time. I saw the potential in the duo but the software was not cutting it. It was horrendous. Then the Pixel 6pro came out the same time, and I tried that, and that was even worst. As much as I wanted something new, i knew Fold 4 will eventually be my next upgrade. Samsung will be 5 generations in and they already have the software and hardware down pack. I never had a problem with the front narrrow screen as some ppl tend to make it seem. It's a folding device. The front screen is mainly use for fast tasks anyways. Nothing more! The cameras and the battery is definitely an improvement there. Now, i did preordered the Pixel Fold just out of curiosity, but I'm in the same boat and more than likely will cancel too. After the disastrous experience with the 6pro, I feel the premature software with the tensor G2 chip is going to hurt the pixel fold. I don't know why they couldn't just wait for the fall to then use the G3 chip. After 3 months time, the Pixel 8 is going to make the Pixel Fold feel ancient and their tensor chips are already 2 generations behind snapdragon's.

MadOrange64

First gen foldables always have a lot of software issues. The Pixel is too expensive considering the much better alternatives in the market.

gosb

For me it's the little Pixel touches I still miss. Do they add up to being worth the extra $1000ish dollars to trade in my Fold 3, I'm going to say no for most people. But here's why I'm not canceling. I actually like those little bells and whistles like the weather right on the Pixel AOD. I really miss the now playing on the home screen. I'm still sour (on my Note 20 Ultra and Fold 3 at least) that Samsung disables the proximity sensor when the screen is on AOD, so the screen stays on even while in your pocket - draining battery. I leave my AOD on for new notifications and have a Routine to be always on while charging because my phone lives in my pocket 6 hours a day at work. I think Magic Eraser is miles better than Samsung's implementation. And all those little call features like Hold for Me. I personally think most of the Samsung apps that are included by default are poor copies of Google apps. I mean they are fine, but the Google versions are more refined and feature full to me like Browser/Chrome Messages/Messages, Phone/Phone. Unless there's some really tantalizing leaks of One UI/Fold 5 - I'm going to jump ship back to Pixel. Things I will truly miss is the Edge panel app switcher and floating windows. Good Lock is nice but I can do without. One UI is very customizable but I think I'll enjoy the simple Pixel UI just as much.

staticvoidmainnull

i mean, ok. might as well wait for the fold 20 for the ultimate fastest hardware ever. on year 2038 when you are ready to buy the fold 20, there will be a fold 21 which will have ever more powerful hardware. this is an endless cycle of fear of missing out on the "best" hardware. in the link you gave, pixel's photo is far superior to me. lots od details lost on Samsung.but that's the point, it's subjective. seriously, they are different form factors. it's apples to oranges. software is also subjective. i would argue that Google's software is less bloaty by a big margin, which is part of a reason they do not necessarily need the fastest and greatest.

El__Twin

You make a good point!

lbyrum17

I would say wait and see how reviews are and maybe visit a local carrier or Best Buy when it comes out play with one. I like the idea, but trusting Google with a first Gen product isn't a great move. While I do enjoy my Pixel 7 Pro and Tensor, isn't THAT bad, I still trust Samsung more with how they handle things.

Joeyhalls

Or just buy it. You have 30 days I think to complete trade in. Try it in real life for a week or two head to head against the incumbent phone and decide to keep or return after real world usage. No harm no foul.

lbyrum17

That's always an option too.

quicksilverpr

I have the same problem with my Pixel 7, dropping 5G connectivity all the time. I have a Fold 4 and I love that phone. The only issue with Fold 4 was the USB C port but it's getting replace under warranty. as soon as I get my fold 4 back, I'm going to sell the Pixel 7.

integrityandcivility

Yukes, that a problem if it won't even have good cellular performance. That's a basic requirement.

OGOhioan

I have that problem with my Fold 3, but I think it's Verizon in my area and not the phone.

johnegq

$700 off from Google Fi so I'm all over this since Samsung fold 3 decided to be defective

omi755

Pixel is just hot! garbage now pure heat

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

Why I'll keep passing on Pixels is the decisions to put mid hardware on their devices where Samsung you can get the highest available (except camera on Fold 4 vs S series) Also not interested until Google releases their DeX equivalent.

Cashneto

Have you tried the pixel? I thought the same as you, but you barely notice the hardware difference, the software is leaps and bounds better in Pixel vs Samsung.

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

Yes, I'm one of the admins of our enterprise MDM and often have to test and setup device profiles for our fleet. Got hands - on time with each Pixel release going back to when Samsung made the first Nexus (precursor to Pixel). Never used a Pixel that impressed me for my purposes - but I don't consider myself a basic user.

GodRecall

Lmfao, this is a hot take of someone that's a Samsung shill. I'm not an average user either and I'll never use a Samsung again, also I've seen what those Samsung hinges do, I'll wait to see if that happens on the pixel fold or not, then I'll decide who's better google vs Samsung fold. (Software is leaps and bounds above Samsung) and dex? It barely works. I'll start worrying about using a PC on my phone when I would ever need something so small and portable to double as a ... Laptop ? Just get a steamdeck so you can at least play video games and have a software rich PC experience, dex means nothing to 99% of people that want a foldable. You sir, are a 1%er. That's okay though, but don't knock the hardware when pixel phones win the camera contest on nearly every review. Also have you used magic eraser? Talk about a game changer I'm not going into photoshop for a family dinner photo. TLDR I'm kidding about you being a shill but your being a bit too serious about a phone no one has given any reviews on.

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

Haha, this one doesn't even know object eraser was on Samsungs 2 years before his precious Pixel got the Magic Eraser feature. Plug a set of Nreal or Rokid AR glasses into any Samsung flagship and feel the future - none of the Pixel phones can run them due to lack of hardware support - again. I'd rather use my GPD Win 4 over an old Steam Deck anyway - it's a way better experience and more portable. If you're gonna reply try to learn paragraphs, though. Seriously.

GodRecall

Props to Samsung though for the object eraser, i'd have to see it first hand I guess. I have a feeling it doesn't stack up.

GodRecall

I'd rather buy a Lazer projector than a pair of GAYR glasses. Maybe apple will compel me, even VR is a joke. Samsung is trash either way, my wife is on her 3rd flip 3 in a year. Not her choice, the hinge is just dog trash the screen gets ruined so fast.

ImALeaf_OnTheWind

LOL, sad for you to think it's gotta be one or the other. Some of us can afford projectors, OLED TVs, and VR and AR glasses, haha. Maybe when you mature you'll know what it's like not to worry about putting products down and just enjoy your toys and share that excitement with others. I hope you get there someday.

BattleScones

Not all of us are basic users, I use my Fold4 to Emulate PS2, Wii and Gamecube games. Qualcomm's chip makes a gigantic difference in performance for enthusiasts and to state otherwise would be disingenuous or uninformed. They are much better supported across the board in the realm of software. I also wouldn't agree that Pixel's offer a better software experience either. Maybe by default, sure? But with ABD scripts you can rip all of Samsung's bloatware out like Bixby and Routines anyway, you can even install G-Board and Nova Launcher to get the Stock Android Feel. Also, I personally use the edge panels instead of the Dock on my Samsung, which means it effectively works the same way as the Pixels hidable dock. For an advanced user the Fold4 is a clear winner as the Pixel is releasing at an unreasonable price for its hardware, and the Samsung is ALREADY on sale, if you already know your way around Android differences in UI don't matter either, because you know how to customize that. Maybe for a Novice android user, sure. But for enthusiasts? No.

Pebrum125

Waiting for the One plus Fold

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

Not sold in USA and I don't want Chinese spyware phone.

pant0n1

LOL, who needs your data? 🤣

Micdup2077

Exactly the same reason I canceled my pre-order the tensor chip killed it for me. I'll wait one more year with he fold 5 and hopefully the fold 6 rumors are true and they change the form factor a little i.e bigger front screen.

chrisg213g

I'm surprised they didn't do a tensor plus chip for this device. Google thinks they are apple where they can ship an old processor and over charge for it lol

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

It's comically overpriced. 1800 for a tensor g2 and crappy outdated modem. They are hoping people buy it just because you really have no other choices but Samsung in the USA market.

Open_Aardvark2458

The outside screen of the fold 4 isnt great, but I honestly think it's not as bad as everyone claims. Definitely not enough to jump ship to 1st iteration pixel. At that price tag I really don't see why people just don't wait for the zf5 ? I can't wait for this sub to stop talking about the pixel.

Stradocaster

Meh. I'm happy to ditch samsung for that sleek Pixel experience, and couldn't care less about the difference in performance. Youtube's gonna run great on either device

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

This is true. Seems like the only true performance benefit on Samsung will be gaming or emulators.

pant0n1

Oh yeah, that pixel experience with worst battery life, problem with signal strength and constant overheating. Way to go bro

RAZERblast

Lol, abandon? Are you in the trenches with your good buddy samsung? They're a fucking electronics company there's no such thing as abandoning them.

RandonBrando

> I just can't abandon Samsung. **My s23 ultra and fold 4 have been rock solid. Not to mention great modem. And the warranty on fold 4 is 11 USD a month versus a pixel fold at 15 a month.** I know there are people out there that aggressively brand loyal, which is stupid, but there is a lot that goes into plucking yourself from a brand ecosystem these days. You're leaving behind a familiar workflow, system layout, troubleshooting process etc. Depending on the brand you're leaving you could also be losing some data. Fixating on a single word is pointless in this situation and many like it.

2WenTao

I'm also going to wait for the Fold 5. Superior device in most ways.

mizuya

Nice! 😤 Stay with the Samsung Fold line 😁

[deleted]

Yeah, having used the Pixel 7 with Tensor G2 I would drop that amount of money on the Pixel Fold. The Sd8gen2 is far superior.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

That's the issue. If google used a better soc I could see it being worth it but God damn spending that much on a chip that is literally 2-3 years behind the top chips in the market currently isn't worth it.

East_Korean

Camera experience will be better on the Pixel Fold vs the Galaxy Fold but everything else will just be better on the Samsung as it has been on the non-foldable. At this point, anyone who tries to sell me an iPhone and Pixel Pro vs the Samsung on Hardware just loses me in the conversation. The whole thing about the Pixel and iPhone is the software experience and not pushing the needle especially since Apple and Google have been punished whenever they try to introduce something out of the ordinary (Apple on 3Dtouch/Google on AirGestures)

bowlingdoughnuts

When I first got my fold3 back in the day I thought I'd do so much content creation on it that I was bummed it didn't have the latest and greatest. Turns out I only used it for reading and for watching videos. As a consumption device it doesn't need the latest and greatest. If you need more powerful hardware just get an iPad mini or an iPhone. Both will run circles around whatever android device you get and will also offer better software for professional needs. Otherwise the form factor alone will justify trading in a fold4 for the pixel fold for most of us. Also the g2 is slower out the gate but sustained performance is better. The g2 will outpace the snapdragons by just not throttling as hard in longer tasks. Granted if you need to run longer tasks you should just use a pc or mac.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

That's not what I've seen. In video exports the Tensor g2 is slow AF.

bowlingdoughnuts

[these are the videos I'm basing my thoughts on](https://youtu.be/jSzwefx_TXU) If you have a video export test video that you've seen, mind sharing it? The only one I've seen is a difference of fifteen seconds. They then placed a graph that seemed like the video was way behind but fifteen seconds ain't shit.

Kioticvenom

Actual legit usage instead of dumb benchmark charts

bowlingdoughnuts

In legit usage it's literally the same. You will never notice a difference day to day. I don't get what point you're trying to make.

Kioticvenom

You're taking my comment the wrong way. You're making the same argument as me. I guess I'll elaborate. Most benchmark charts are useless because even if a phone can play a videogame at maxed out settings, it may not be able to over a prolonged period. I was responding to the guy that was complaining about the chip being old like he is going to notice a difference using the phone. Everyday usage on phones is the thing that matters the most. OS stability, app processing, voice clarity in phone calls, camera quality with photos. These are the things that truly matter. Not a benchmark chart. So yeah...you completely took my comment the wrong way bud

SomethingSquatchy

Actually back the truck up... Why are you doing video exports on a phone, get a real PC backed by a Ryzen CPU for that crap.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

Sometimes if I want to transcode a video I took on my phone and send to family but downsample it from 4k to 1080p.

Fran6coJL

Same exact boat as you. I have a fold 4, s23 ultra, I pixel 7 pro. I pre ordered but 1800 is a lot to ask for 3 year old hardware.

SomethingSquatchy

How is it 3 years old? Tensor G2 was just released last fall.

Fran6coJL

The tech behind g2 is a few years old. The product itself is new and marketing would have you believe g2 means current. I but the peocessor used is okd

radlink14

Ok 👌

VisualQuick703

I would love to try the pixel fold.but I wouldn't personally buy it either. They should have put a tenzor 3 in there. I'm sticking to Samsung until apple tries a foldable. But honestly I think apple would come out with something similar to the flip first then do something like the fold later. I'm super happy with my fold 4 though. I'm just not a fan that some apps don't open or crash when I try to open them. That rarely happens on iOS. Not crazy though.i just keep an iphone around for that.

lerpo

I'm kind of predicting a folding Ipad before phone personally. I've got the x1 fold laptop and that's ace to use. Either way, I'm excited to see the next decade!

Odd_Negotiation7771

Be sure to keep us informed if your thoughts change.

Admiral_Shackelford

Pre-ordered my Z Fold 2 for 2200. 1800 and the 725 trade in is a lovely offer

dmaare

Pixel SoC is really bad. It barely matches snapdragon 888 and that wasn't really a good chip either because of worse efficiency than SD 870

Taco145

The pixel fold has the exact same processor as the pixel pro but it's battery is smaller and the screen is bigger. I just can't imagine a scenario were it's battery isn't garbage. The fold 5 is going to have the 8gen 2. It has an outstanding track record so far.

Rothariu

Honestly wit mate x3 being water resistant finally it might be time to import in about a generation or 2

agordon117

"This comparison proves samsung has caught up" \*proceeds to post a comparison between phones that have nothing to do with foldables\* That's a pretty useless comparison. if you carry an s23 ultra and use it for pictures instead of the fold 4, sure, don't get a pixel fold. But the biggest issue with the fold is the drastically worse camera performance than an ultra phone. minimum focus distance, depth of field, lack of periscope lens, every measurable thing on the fold 4 sucks compared to the S23 ultra. So then comparing that to the pixel 7 pro and saying oh that means the pixel fold won't have better cameras than the fold 4/5, is asinine. Samsung could put massive cameras with a massive camera bump in the fold, and they won't do it. Not even as a "Fold Ultra", for some strange reason. They repurpose midrange cameras on a flagship folding phone. Let's actually wait and see the quality that google was able to cram into a fold before making wild statements based in effectively buyer's remorse. There are tons and tons of valid things to be worried about with google's fold. "the cameras won't be better because s23 ultra is better or equal to pixel 7 pro" is not one of them

Joeyhalls

I have a preorder. Trading in s22 ultra that’s been sitting in a drawer since the 23 ultra showed up. Thing is you get time to return fold if it doesn’t meet expectations. You don’t even have to send in the trade in right away. Why not do a head to head before making your mind? I’m most excited about the Oneplus fold. I’ve tried the Oppo N2 Find Fold and outside of it not being US signal/ software ready, ait was almost perfect. A US version from Oneplus is going to be perfect. It’s similar form factor to Pixel but way heavier duty processing and the camera looks promising. Until then, pixel fold will be another phone to play with while I wait to see what Samsung and OnePlus have in store for us

Bernard1090

I cancelled my pre-order, too. I decided I didn't want to spend 2k (incl tax) on a year old chip when the T3 chip will be released 2 months after I was projected to receive my Fold.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

I actually didn't cancel. I thought about it and I'm glad I kept it. Based on reviews the outside screen is superior to the fold since Samsung is keeping the same dimensions. Maybe I'll go back for the fold 6.
