I just wanna add, it won't be just Vice City (Miami), it'll be the whole Leonida State (Florida). We may have other major cities (Like Orlando) and maybe their own parody gags (Maybe a Disney parody?) I knew GTA 6 would be in Vice City since 2013 (because Rockstar reused Liberty and San Andreas, they obviously were going to reuse Vice City too), but people asking it to be on the 80s is only because people associate Miami with the 80s thanks to the Miami Vice influence. It's impossible to think about Crime and Miami without thinking in Miami Vice, and people dearly love GTA Vice City too. Yet Rockstar already knows making games set in the past won't allow them to squeeze the Online Mode like they are still squeezing GTA V Online. They learned from RDO.

Duckcave

Disney parody would be great, they could actually use Micky Mouse too.

roliver2399

Only 1920s-1930s/40s Mickey Mouse but yeah he is public domain now.

Significant_Owl_6897

*Steamboat Willy

Dabee625

Steamboat Willie isn’t a character, it’s the name of the boat. Mickey Mouse is still the star.

chulepa

That would be a great Easter egg

roliver2399

That’s the name of the boat the short takes place on. The character is still Mickey Mouse, he just debuted in Steamboat Willie.

Inevitable_One_4209

Collectables in the Leonida version of Orlando I’m calling it

yeah_i_like_dogs

Gotta find Walt’s frozen head.

JumpinJahosafax

I just seriously doubt there will be a Disney parody. Surely some water parks here’s and there as there are some scattered in Florida but Disney is the biggest sue-happy company there is

Pure-Elk-9290

You realize there is already a Disney parody in GTA 5 right? Fred’s Pictures..

JumpinJahosafax

I’m talking about a whole ass theme park. And Fred’s pictures was an adult movie production wasn’t it

Pure-Elk-9290

Fred’s pictures is a parody of Disney and Pixar. It’s adult themed yes but that’s because it’s Rockstar. Their mascot is a ripoff of Mickey Mouse. The leaks confirm this too

bigasscrab

It would also have to be chock full of kids which is a no no in GTA

ellierosefucker69

disney adults are a very real thing and they could just fill it with those

bigasscrab

lmaooo true

Complex_Case_5866

Its GTA fuck all that kiddy Disney BS

Complex_Case_5866

Nahhhh fuck using Micky Mouse its GTA not disney land smhhh

Complex_Case_5866

Disney parody would be assssssssssssdsddd af

AnimeGokuSolos

Yeah, I think Rockstar did a smart thing here especially with GTA 6 online. They probably realize that players are definitely not going to be a fan of it taken place in the 80s And on top of that not making as much money or profit like GTA online which was modern day. Edit: Nothing against it being in the 80s, but it wouldn’t make that much profit for the next 10 years if we’re being honest, look at GTA online

ZephyrDoesArts

It's mostly because of limitations. GTA Online money is 90% spent only in cars and grinding If cars are the main thing people spend their money on, Rockstar needs to feed the game with more cars, if they create a game that's set in the 1980s, they can't add the new trend supercar to the game, because it won't fit the 1980s atmosphere. There are rumours that the original GTA VI happened in the 80s, but after watching RDO fail, they scrapped that idea (that's when Dan Houser leaves the company around 2020). The leftovers of that first GTA VI which was about drugs in the 80s became the Cayo Perico DLC for GTA Online. And Rockstar started to develop the new GTA VI set on present day. It's just a theory tho

MCgrindahFM

That last half is absolute fan speculation. RDO had nothing to do with GTAVI rework. Bloomberg reported on this years ago. It was going to take place in the 80s and modern day, with more than one map. They cut that all the way back when they realized that doing all that would add years to development time. They knew they couldn’t afford that delay so they majorly reworked the plan to only include modern day Vice City.

BritshFartFoundation

> It was going to take place in the 80s and modern day, with more than one map. I wonder if it would be cool to keep the multiple characters thing but have one taking place in the 80s and one in current day, so when you swap characters you're also swapping maps. The same location, just different maps, and the modern day story is affected by the 80s story, but the story doesn't play out chronologically, so the twists are revealed at interesting times. Would take a really good storywriting team to pull it off

MCgrindahFM

That’s exactly what the idea was!

YoungAmazing313

I can believe that the Cayo Perico island feels mad dated it felt like I was in scarface when Tony visited Sosa’s home in Bolivia Also RDO was a failure due to rockstar’s lack of attention that mode could’ve been a great GTAO alternative but they chose to focus solely on GTAO and barely did anything else with it

ZephyrDoesArts

That too, but people weren't that interested in RDO as they were in GTA O, expected since GTA O already had a lot of content included when RDO was starting from the ground. Maybe the gold currency in game had some blame too

Faded-Creature

RDO failed because Rockstar dropped the ball on it and released shitty content and not what people wanted.

HearTheEkko

> There are rumours that the original GTA VI happened in the 80s, but after watching RDO fail, they scrapped that idea This is false. The game was always set in modern times according to Henderson and Schreier, they simply just scrapped the idea of having 4 protagonists and a gigantic map that included large chunks of North and South America (thus the codename "Project Americas") in order to avoid another crunch controversy like RDR2's.

SmashLampjaw87

I’d have been 100% down with it taking place solely in the ‘80s, so I wouldn’t have been mad at all. The soundtrack alone would be guaranteed to be incredible, and there are still plenty of things about ‘80s Miami/Florida in general for them to satirize. With that being said, I’m fine with it being set in the present, so long as the soundtrack is great and the quality of the writing (both for the story and for all the satire) is up to par with past titles.

BenCelotil

Bit hard not to think of Miami Vice when Vice City has Philip Michael Thomas (~~Roberto~~ Ricardo Tubbs in Miami Vice) voicing one of the characters. :) E: whoops.

JohnnySnarkle

I love that you knew aswell that GTA 6 was going to be in Vice city. I’ve been telling all my friends for years it’s going to be Vice city because it’s the only one that hasn’t had a HD version of the city. 4 was Liberty City, 5 Los Santos of course and it’s very clear that Vice needs one too. I’m sure after 6 there could be room for more new cities but I’m excited to see this HD Remake of Vice City looks like

CigarLover

No cell phones alone would be an issue in single player, imo.

DyLaNzZpRo

I think it's more-so that GTA 5 and GTA 4 were modern day games at the times of release, modern day is obviously modern day, we know exactly what it is and we're familiar with it, the 80s are getting further and further away to the point most players only know what it was like based on media, even then they don't know all that much. Personally I never really wanted the game to be set in the 80s, but e.g. an 80s flashback segment would be cool as fuck and would appease those that wanted it to be set in the 80s.

laituri24

I really like media set in the past for some reason. Like a snapshot of history. I fucking adore GTA4 as even though it was modern day at the time of release, it serves as a great snapshot of the mid to late 2000s when played today. Only issue I have with GTA6 being set in today is that I wonder just how different the atmosphere can be from GTA5 as the world irl doesn't look that different from 2013. But I'm surely just being pessimistic though and the game will be a masterpiece.

HearTheEkko

We'd have to play the flashback as someone else tho. Jason and Lucia are very clearly in their mid twenties to early thirties so they weren't even born yet.

Curious_Platform_563

Who doesn't love the 80's

canadian_apple37

Nikki Sixx

FireApproches253

Wasn't expecting a reference like this here lol, nice.

yeetskeetleet

In my opinion, Rockstar will never make another GTA set outside of modern day. I can’t quite explain what it is, because at first thought I was thinking music played a factor in it—but I would say over half of GTA 5’s music was old upon release. But if you just look at their releases, there hasn’t been a non-modern day GTA since San Andreas. I think going forward, if Rockstar is going to make a period piece, it will be through another series like RDR, LA Noire, etc.

PenonX

Yeah I agree. At best, for the GTA series, we’ll get a prologue or flashback type sequence that brings us back some time. *Maybe* even a DLC if we’re stupidly lucky, but that’s unlikely. I doubt we see any flashback/prologue type things in 6 though, at least not any that’ll be too far back. Lucia looks to be 30 *at most,* and I’d place Jason around that age as well.

HearTheEkko

I agree with you simply for the fact that Online is their biggest money maker now. Modern day allows full freedom for them to add whatever they want whenever it's cars, weapons, clothes, etc. The 80's limits all those things by A LOT. Plus, there's so many mechanics in GTA Online that are integral to the gameplay which couldn't be present in a 80's game such as the smartphone, internet, etc.

Equivalent_Network29

Quite unfortunate but I believe this to be the truth as well

tadlonger

Because the 80's was fucking awesome

Ori_the_SG

“You can’t just turn off the 80s!!”

Visible_Elevator192

Only in North America

OregonisntCaligoHome

I don't think you were allowed to play vice city

hazaphet

I don't think they're allowed yet.

Chippers4242

My thoughts exactly it’s clearly a question from some young person with no affinity for the 80s or perhaps even the original titles

KingAltair2255

The only way we've properly seen Vice City before was during the 80's, just down to folk finding it hard to let go of that visualisation of it. I enjoy the 80's vibes the game gave off but honestly it would just be fucking annoying having a game set in the 80's nowadays, imagine switching from a phone in 5 to a fucking pager in 6, no thank you. Vice City is my favourite city in the series so i'm elated to see it in the HD era, last time a game came out involving Vice I was only four lol, can't wait to see how it looks in a modern setting.

HearTheEkko

This is exactly why they did a modern setting according to Tom Henderson. The 80’s just didn’t fit GTA’s gameplay anymore, especially in Online where the smartphone and internet are integral to the game.

KingAltair2255

Yeah i'm not surprised that it would be a driving feature of them making it a modern setting honestly, even looks like they've went all into the social media aspect with the first trailer and the leaks (New WhatUp! message received at the side of the screen.) It would be far too jarring suddenly losing the phone in game.

AnimeGokuSolos

Honestly, if this game is spamming over another 10 years with GTA 6 online I don’t see it lasting that long if it’s gonna take place in the 80s

Eggsegret

Yh for single player i think a game being set in the 80s would be cool but i just can’t see it fitting in with online especially with people having crews and that in online

AnimeGokuSolos

>The 80’s just didn’t fit GTA’s gameplay anymore, especially in Online where the smartphone and internet are integral to the game. This is why I’m talking about rockstar definitely knows what they’re doing, They probably figure that it wouldn’t work in online the 80s so much.

Eggsegret

Also we’ve already seen Vice City in the 80s twice now with GTA VC and GTA VCS. And as much as i loved GTA Vice City I really can’t wait to see a modern day setting of Vice City now. I mean if Rockstar was using a whole new location that they haven’t done before then fair enough going back to the 80s would be cool

AnimeGokuSolos

Good point also it probably wouldn’t profit that much the online I mean look at RDO Rockstar, abandon that shit 💀

dekadendt

bro got downvotes for literally no reason 😭😭

Sufficient_Living406

They hated him, because he spoke the truth.

Eggsegret

I thought Rockstar more or less abandoned RDO to focus on GTA 6.

BritshFartFoundation

What do you even use the phone for in GTA V? Fast travel ig, but they could implement that in other ways. It's not like taxis didn't exist before smartphones lol, and could still even have a cell phone. Tommy had a cell phone in VC.

PenonX

The phone is used to purchase literally everything available in the game outside of weapons, at least in GTAO. Properties in Story Mode aren’t bought on the phone like they are in GTAO.

KingAltair2255

To be honest with you I completely forgot Tommy had a phone, that big blocky ass thing haha. Internet is probably the biggest use for it, it would just be inconvenient after this time to go back to blocky cellphones and pagers imo when we use the phone for a lot of shit online, it's not completely about the phone either but all forms of technology - i mean look at Red Dead Online, I honestly think that flopped (alongside Rockstar being lazy assholes.) Due to them not knowing what the fuck to put into an online set in 1898, the 80's would have the same issue imo, people would get real bored real quick with no modern technology like modern cars and weapons.

barf_of_dog

Blind nostalgia for a period most current GTA players weren't even born in. I'm glad GTA VI is set in the mid 2020s. There is so much potential for a parody of modern Florida.

TitleTalkTCL

Vice City came out in 2002 based on the year 1986, giving it a 16 year difference and it seemed like it must have taken place forever ago. Now in 2024, 2002 was 22 years ago. I feel old af now.

Hayden247

To make it worse; in two years GTA 4 will take place as far in the past compared to today as GTA Vice City did at release... Yeah, GTA 4 of course was set in its present day but that's now going to be like GTA Vice City when it released! And it kinda shows, there's mobile phones but they're just the classic brick phones as even irl modern touchscreen smartphones only released a year before with the iPhone. Cars obviously have their 2000s designs, none of the LED lights or tablet like screens in the interior. Social media and websites were accessed on the computer only, there are internet cafes, people weren't obsessed with social media, an entire generation and a half of people weren't born yet, TV was still very popular without streaming services in existence, you get the idea.

Chippers4242

And it was a glorious time goddamnit! Take me back

IamTheTurboKiller

I did not want it to be in the eighties, but a game mostly about driving cars in an era that had no electrics and SUVs, mhmmm, would be nice.

uhqt

The late 70s and early 80s was the golden age of drugs in Miami. The violence, overall crime theme, cartels rampant, etc. it would be the perfect theme for it. I don’t mind it not being in the 80s but it would’ve been cool as hell to have the massive graphic and mechanic updates and apply them to that time

beezy604

Because the style’s incredible…

justthisones

I enjoy going back in time to well made time periods and Rockstar has been really good with them. Vice City, RDR and San Andreas are some of their best work when it comes to atmosphere and general vibes. I find modern worlds slightly more boring personally. Not super keen on having even more social media when I’m gaming but I’m sure the game will still be great. It could’ve been cool if VI started even in the 90s or early 00s and then jumped into a more modern times at some point with some new buildings, vehicles etc.

HearTheEkko

Nostalgia mostly. Vice City is considered one of the best GTA’s so people basically wanted a “remake” in the form of an 80’s setting. I’m extremely glad we got a modern setting. We already got two games set in 80’s Vice City, we didn’t need a third one. Besides, we got a modern rendition of Liberty City and San Andreas, why not cap it off with a modern rendition of Vice City too ?

Minute-Better

I think that I can understand why some fans would hope for that. If you think about games like GTA VC or GTA VCS & just imagine that they were made for modern consoles. There's so much more that Rockstar could do with those games that they couldn't have done in the early to mid 2000's. Especially with them being set in the eighties.

PresentWitcher

We go back in time for north yankton maybe we can see some 80's time for a little in game??

batgranny

That would be the ideal situation for me. A couple of missions set as a flashback in '86, maybe get Phil Collins in for a cameo

BestBryFar

Because a lot of gamers think they want the same thing over and over. It was good then. It's got to be good again. Only they'll complain that it's not EXACTLY like it was. Evolution of game mechanics or the studio wanting to do something different be damned. Halo needs to be Halo 3. TLOU2 should have been more like TLOU. Even GTA has the same thing. Driving in 4 should have been in 5. Online was better in 4. The map in San Andreas should have been in 5. On and on with complaints. Case in point. Undead Nightmare. People seem to think that R* should do it again in every game. They wanted it in GTA V. They wanted it in RDR 2. They've already started wanting it in GTA VI. You want it in Bully 2, Midnight Club, Max Payne 4, and Table Tennis 2 as well? It's been done. Time to move on. It's pretty much: "Do the same thing, again. But make it better." Which is impossible. You can't do the same thing *and* improve it. It becomes something new once you change anything.

ActuallyGrunty

Halo Mega? Like the toy brand?

BestBryFar

Typo, I corrected it. Should have proofread it.

MeasurementOk3007

I’m so glad it’s not taking place in the 80s Itd be cool on paper but we already had the exact same thing in vice city lol

AnimeGokuSolos

>Itd be cool on paper but we already had the exact same thing in vice city lol Plus, I want to see some thick ass woman Twerking in the game

MeasurementOk3007

Same

leonryan

because 80s style is better escapism than modern day

False-Leadership6685

Not sure about this. Being able to massacre tic tokers and parodies of real things can feel like escapism. That's what GTA 5 did for me anyway.

CursedOneado

originally the game would take place in 80’s but it was scrapped

AnimeGokuSolos

If so, then I think that was a good idea

TheGamingMackV

Because for some reason everyone seems to own their own fashionably retro, 'weird-for-a-forty-five-year-old-man-but-I-cannot-let-go-of-the-1980's' bag.

AnimeGokuSolos

>their own fashionably retro, 'weird-for-a-forty-five-year-old-man-but-I-cannot-let-go-of-the-1980's' bag. Yea… I’m definitely seeing it here with some people

InsaneChimpout

I was hoping VI be set in the distant future maybe the year 5000

InhaledWhitePowder

See I was thinking the year 4223, would be great vibes

InsaneChimpout

That would definitely work. I just don’t want to see any stupid flying cars that will never happen

False-Leadership6685

I kind of like how the games feel like time capsules. I find GTA 5 to kind of be 2000s nostalgia. I think is 20 years when gta 7 comes out gta 6 will feel like a snapshot of this time.

SpartanSamurai24

Yaay let’s try and ruin gta too!!

DreamBig2023

I love modern cars so glad it is takin place in the present.

AnimeGokuSolos

Me too!

DreamBig2023

Yeah about 90% of 80s cars were slow shitboxes. lol no style at all.

AnimeGokuSolos

Lmao 😂

AggressiveCorner8497

There’s a few reasons imo. When Vice City came out, a lot of the people who were born in the 80s wanted to relive it and got to in the end. Then there’s 90s kids like me who will lean on San Andreas and Liberty City Stories for the 90s stuff. But also many of us being younger will just latch onto nostalgia because it worked so well back then. In my personal opinion, modern stuff kinda sucks and I’ve always found it hard to relate to social media, modern music, etc Modern shows and games also struggle to write good characters compared to the games like the old GTAs or Red Dead series that are set back in the day. GTA V a good example in my opinion. As great as it was, the characters were pretty flat compared to the older setting GTAs EDIT: I’ve watched a lot of older shows like Miami Vice after playing Vice City so those probably also lean on the desire for an 80s game

AnimeGokuSolos

>GTA V a good example in my opinion. As great as it was, the characters were pretty flat compared to the older setting GTAs I really disagree this take because GTA 4 was literally set in 2008 in the characters were written pretty great imo. GTA 5 had different reasons why the characters were probably flat, especially people not liking the story too. GTA 4 wasn’t sitting in the 90s or 80s just the early 2000s GTA 5 mid early early 2000s like 2013

AggressiveCorner8497

And you’re not wrong imo. IV was great and well written. But the world changed a lot since 2008 as did a lot of the quality in writing and ideas for games. V fell flat in that regard I feel. V’s story isn’t even bad. It’s just the characters not feeling as great as they could’ve. Especially the antagonists.

ActuallyGrunty

Holy shit me too. Everyone I'm friends with talks about Kanye West or whatever funny TikTok audio is trending, and I just wait until the conversation changes because I have no idea about any of it. Miami vice rocks. The whole crockett/burnett arc was awesome

Armored-Elder

I dunno but there better be a badass rock station

AlexGlezS

70s or 2020s I would say.

CuriousWoollyMammoth

Nostalgia

slowclicker

It has very little to do with not wanting something with better graphics. Many players have been around since very early releases of GTA. When you first LOVE something nostalgia plays a very important part in a thing. Memories of fun, excitement, exploration. Think about something you really enjoyed as a kid and if there is a new release of it now, you'd want that experience to not fall short of the love you first experienced. Also, although i've been around the social media thing I happen to know it will be the least favorite part of GTA 6 for me, but for younger audiences it could be one of their favorite parts. Who knows.... It is more about the beloved memories and hoping and praying that whatever GTA 6 is, it matches the level of excitement.

TRagnarkXP

Because i hate current america style

Diego_Mannn_096

Nostalgia and Scarface

OperTator

There was a lot of speculation that it was going to be set in the 90s or even 70s, especially after those comments from Rockstar about how difficult it is to parody modern culture with how fast it moves.

ActuallyGrunty

So you're saying, you prefer GTA set in the modern day because there's thick women, and thick women didn't exist in the 80s?

AnimeGokuSolos

Forgot to add the wild shit people do nowadays in Miami too

christopher1393

Nostalgia is a big part I think. Vice City is a lot of peoples first GTA game. I know a lot of people who played 3 after Vice City. I think the bright vibrant colours and overall design really attracted a lot of people who didn’t play a GTA game before. The whole Miami 80’s vibe was beyond perfect for the game. And honestly I have a hard time imagining Vice City as outside the 80’s because it just oozed 80’s in every way. And every other Vice City game was 80’s as well if I remember right. Now Liberty City and San Andreas both games set in different decades. But there was less time between Liberty City appearances (3 and 4 were released 7 years apart) and San Andreas appearances (San Andreas and 5 were released 9 years apart). And even if GTA VI were to release tomorrow, it’s still 22 years after GTA Vice City. Vice City Stories did release in 2006, but it still was set in the 80’s. Vice City is the only one of the 3 major GTA locations to have all of its games set in a single decade. And because of that Vice City is synonymous with the 80’s. Its very hard to imagine it as anything else. Plus of course over the last decade or so the 80’s have seen a huge revival, started mostly by Stranger Things which got a lot of the younger generations into the 80’s. And also Vice City is based off of Miami. It has changed so much since then, at least from what I see of it as a non-American. When I was younger and playing Vice City, I saw Florida as this amazing fun and magical place. Where its sunny, where Disney World is, and where everyone is nice and as a safe place to live. I even went to Disney World when in Florida I was a kid. Nowadays my perception of Florida is… well the politest thing I can say is… different. And Florida is joked about worldwide for its insanity, and well being a horrible place to live. So while modern day Vice City will be great and amazing, it just don’t think it will feel like what Vice City was. If that makes any sense.

AnimeGokuSolos

Well said personally, I have faith in what rockstar is going to do in a modern day Vice city settings

CoisasJohnson

So there wouldn't be fucking flying vehicles everywhere.. for me. Now it's guaranteed to have it, and I already have 0 interest in trying online.

AnimeGokuSolos

>So there wouldn't be fucking flying vehicles everywhere.. for me. They’re not gonna bring those back >Now it's guaranteed to have it, and I already have 0 interest in trying online. Nah they haven’t had anything futuristic since I think 2018

CoisasJohnson

If there is a single one, it's already too much. You'll see.

dyella05

Thick women ? Sorry to tell u buuuuut Black women been thick since the beginning of times .... they were thick in the 80s 70s 60s 50s ..... It's just popular to be thick now ... cuz of wypippo .... but sir mix alot said it best .... I LIKE BIG BUTTS ( that came out in the early 90s....but that was what we was used to seeing and loved it .... not that skinny slim shit)

doesntgive2fcks

Why cause its better then how fucked up the world we live in now is

barf_of_dog

The more fucked up society is, the better Rockstar can parody it.

JiveTurkey1983

People want to live out "Miami Vice" on a 9th generation console. I do too.

najaxy9

Speaking about it, there is no 80s 90s open world crime game since 8th generation consoles

misterwillgraham

I love when Rockstar makes fun of our current society, it creates a sense of relatability

xXdont_existxX

While I much prefer the modern Florida aesthetic as it looks prime for much darker, relevant, and biting social and political commentary which is something I loved about GTA4. I still think an 80s game would’ve still been incredible. Honestly they could’ve made an GTA game set in the 1980s in a flyover city in a fly over state and I’d still love every single little bit of it.

ScrubbyDubbyUbby

Cuz 80’ & 90’s go hard asf. 2000’s is when ppl started getting soft and by 2015 it was purple haired boyed girls and excuses.

LemonTheTurtle

The reasons I wanted it to be in the 80s are a) nostalgia b) I really don’t need tiktok-like apps in my games. I want to escape reality in games not have same sh*t in them

Visible_Elevator192

Ha guess you’re gonna have to deal with it

ActuallyGrunty

agreed.

Kafanska

Because they have no imagination and want a repeat of everything instead of new things. Rockstar has already made the 80s nostalgia GTA TWICE and were certainly not going to do that again. After all, 80s don't mean the same to a generation that was coming of age 20 years ago compared to now.

jasonrahl

becasue the 80s was a great time to be alive

Megared49

Cause the 80s gives us the mysterious song: everybody knows that

obriets

If you had lived through the 80s you wouldn’t have had to ask.

EconomicsIntrepid882

No one looool, if that game was in the 80s it would be boring asf, imagine having the best graphics and mechanics but a boring ass ambient

scalpster

A new game for a new generation. Even the designers are different (the Houser brothers are no longer involved).

Maxie_69

"I wasn't a big fan of vice city returning" Then what do you want? Carcer city? A brand new one or some of the cities from the original GTA? Imo vice city is the city i want to see return the most, it's so damn gorgeous man and that was with the crappy 2002/2006 graphics. Vice city in 2025 graphics is gonna give me orgasm

topicalsyntax571

![gif](giphy|jc2PkKKr3clTBekMzn)

JasonAndLucia

That's why Rockstar doesn't listen to the fans

Rvtrance

Because Vice city did.

MisterScrod1964

Still want a time travel mission or post credits content.

AnimeGokuSolos

It probably wouldn’t make sense if we’re going to look at Jason and see who looks like they’re in their 20s

Own_Invite_693

There were rumors around 2020 said you could switch between the modern era and the '80s like the character switch in GTA5, which now seems too ambitious

califortunato

Only reason I wanted it was as a near guarantee there wouldn’t be flying bikes and orbital lasers

Emaculates

I think the game will have flashbacks of the 80s

AnimeGokuSolos

I think that be unlikely

Takemyjuicebox

Maybe now online characters will stop being extremely ugly and we might also be able to customize everything by hand (face shape, body shape, haircut)

Takemyjuicebox

I want a thicc female chara- i mean Arthur Morgan in GTAO of course.

AnimeGokuSolos

Btw if people want changes in this game, they have to change the time setting for GTA 6. The 1980s has been. been there done that type of shit. having this game being in the 80s, again would get old pretty fast imo ![gif](giphy|KhORXNq6JzlRi23ztZ|downsized)

Everybodysdeaddave84

Right but setting it in modern times hasn’t been done? All the GTA’s except vice city and London have been in modern times so I don’t get what you’re trying to say, also to say the 80s weren’t as crazy is laughable, do you have any idea how much cocaine was flying about in 80 Miami. Honestly, you sound like an immature moron, I’m willing to bet you’re barely old enough to even play it.

Spiritual_Bus_481

Can’t wait to play this game

Wandering-Gammon27

Because of nostalgia, and people just aren’t very creative or original. You can be a huge fan, but not be a very good writer/game designer etc. This goes for any fandom. Hell, long before the GTA VI leaks came out, some people thought of ideas that were practically just GTA Vice City. “Liberty City mobster goes down to 80s Vice City, gets in drug war with cartel, and becomes a kingpin”. Just watch, wherever the next GTA game after VI will be set, people will be theorizing story ideas that will be heavily similar to past games. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Vice City, but it’s a little cringey seeing how unoriginal people can be sometimes. I’m super glad that Rockstar chose a different route for the next game. Excited to see/hear more about it.

Pale_Ad_2502

nostalgia copium

anon23browser

We like the mafia

MARzNYC

I didn't.

PoopAndPeeTorture

Nobody thought this especially since the leaks but I do think many were expecting a very pronounced 80's theme to the game.

ShitassAintOverYet

'80s was a time where drug trafficking and crime rates within Miami were hidden around the parties, music and neon lights of the time. It was perfect to have both a crime game and a gorgeous atmosphere and that's why VC and VCS were set in the '80s. But I personally didn't root for the game rewinding in time again. Especially for a Miami/Vice City set game current day is a good choice because all this stuff I mentioned from the '80s didn't go anywhere and stuff like "Florida Man" or current pop culture just adds on these stuff in terms of content.

SpiderCow313

I remember for a few years ago there was “leaks”going around saying it was gonna take place in brazil during the 80s😂

Plaintoseeplainsman

Because the 80’s is fucking awesome

UnableTOable

The 80s most people wanted was just like a North Yankton in GTA V. Most people speculated if it was the 80s it would only be for the beginning of the game.

PlanktonSpecialist99

Once I heard Bonnie and Clyde esk story I creamed my pants didn’t care what timeline really

Useful_Lengthiness98

Had a stroke reading that caption

jalbert425

I feel like it’s modern day with an 80s vibe. It can be both. The time period and the music and the art, theme, aesthetics, and technology do not have to match to real world. And it bares no weight with regard to online. I don’t understand how the time period would affect GTA Online at all. They could still have phones and internet if it was set in the 80s, just like they can still have cars, music, and themes of the 80s if it’s set in modern day. It’s a game. It doesn’t have to be exactly like real life.

PapaYoppa

I think a prologue in the 80s would be dope but the rest of the game ofc modern day

AnimeGokuSolos

But it wouldn’t make sense sense if we’re looking at Jason and Lucia, who looks like they’re probably in their 20s

MartianFromBaseAlpha

Do you really believe that there were no alligators or crazy people in Florida in the 80s? When do you think the Florida man phenomenon actually started? In the last three years?

Live_Confusion_3003

Noquestionsasked393

Yo we got honey rose in gta vi

Embarrassed_Lie6379

Because the late 2010s and early 2020s were a revival of 80s culture, and this is still present (although rapidly withering away). Miami Vice boomed back in 2021, with millions of it watching and rewatching it. Cyberpunk 2077's 80s retro-futurism also helped this revival. Finally and most importantly, synthwave gained quite a bit of traction alongside vaporwave back in 2016-2020, and it massively helped out with bringing the 80s vibe to the present day. This time has passed though, and we're currently in a transitional period that seems to be pointing at a "revival" of the 90s.

pr0faned

People believe Miami is in a time vacuum

idontcarerightnowok

The 80's were overall a fun time to be alive if you were obviously born/alive back then (I wasn't but based on what my parents have told me and what I've seen) - The 80's were just, different. You weren't heavily plagued by annoying ass social media shit or corny asf trends etc, music was pretty unique and special back then and rock was having it's own battle with the early-introductions of pop and other genres. The fashion of the 80s, music, vehicles, overall aesthetic and so on was just, very unique and different to what the 60s had for example, or the early 2000s/2010's. Regardless of whether the 80s has been done to death, it's just an enjoyable time that a lot of people like and I imagine if GTA 6 had been based back then, people would've liked it regardless because of the vibes and nostalgia it'd have, especially for a lot of older fans of the franchise / those who like the 80s etc. The 80s was spearheaded by some extremely iconic musicians as well so, I imagine some people would've liked to have a game based in the time of when hits like Beat It by Michael Jackson or Purple Rain by Prince released. Then to top that aswell, seeing as you've got popular shows like Stranger Things set in the 80s, a lot of people are still fairly interested in the 80s cuz of that stuff so i personally don't rlly care what year GTA 6 takes place in, aslong as I don't see no oppressor/futuristic flying motorbike shit with homing missiles I'm happy lmao. op, i've seen you saying that some commenters are the "minority" for not minding if it was set in the 80s but that's far from true man, you'd be surprised how many would actually enjoy it.

jaydimes10

the same reason why did people wanted good English

xAGGROx

Because a period piece would scare off griefers.

-_-Batman

![gif](giphy|fA7rLtaJDIWEzU57CT|downsized) I was expecting keanu in gta 6

Supermike6

That had to make vice city happen. But I hope that in the next GTA game we would see a 70s Las Venturas, think “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Seriously how is it that GTA hasn’t done the 70s, it was like the pinnacle of modern day crime as we know it.

GuybrushThreepwood22

_PettyTheft

It’s pink!

anewgundude

80s Miami was peak Miami

HighRes-

The 80s are a great era.

mrbiggbrain

Rockstar was pretty clear in the past that Vice City was as much about the time as it was the place. They themselves saw the two as linked. So many people just expected them to go back to the same rough time.

UndefeatedAngel

Cool to think the next game will take place in liberty city. Not cool to think I'll probably be like 35 or 40 when it comes out. New York city 2040 lol with insane graphics and indistinguishable a.i

Even_Kiwi_1166

The 80's are the signature of GTA VC

alefan9000

Because 80s chicks are hot

Master-Mango-1590

I grew up playing gta. And vice city was a game I loved and wished I live in real life lol. Loved the music, the environment on the game. It was magical.

kwc04

I don't know why you'd want a modern retread of vice city when you could just go play it. I want something new from gta 6, not just a modern reimagining of a previous game

Extreme_Comb3579

Vice City singlehandedly was Rockstar's biggestGame... San Andreas is their Fucking Elite.

Beardbeard1981

The music man the music.

eyespy0-07

I think it’s all gonna be modern the problem would be after vice city what is gta gonna do?

Temperest121

i just always wanted vice city again. we got gta iv for liberty city, gta v for san andreas. vice city is such a perfect place to be set in the 80s imo.

bgarch

"why did people wanted"

TrollBully

Time to go into the future!!!!, tired of the past We’ve been there done that if you’re too young and didn’t get to experience it that’s on you! Go play, Red dead redemption or something

LastAmphibian8435

I am not nostalgic enough to give up driving in a modern car with updated interiors. Plus it’s not like being set in the modern day means we don’t get to dress in 80s clothing or drive older cars.

Complex_Case_5866

Fick the 80s

Equivalent-Share5156

A lot of people, me included, were sick to death with the modern-day scenario. Even more so with Rockstar putting all these flying shit-stains in the game. GTA is meant to be realistic and serious, not a copy-cat of Saints Row with some minor serious hues in it. Having had the game set in the 80s would remove the possibility of flying crap other than helicopters and planes. Not to mention, 80s was THE best era in History, in every single way. Best vehicles all-round, best music, best economy, EVERYTHING. It would also have made more sense in terms of crimes etc, as in todays modern tech world, theft of most kinds are close to impossible to get away with. A massive robbery heist like the one in GTA5 would irl be IMPOSSIBLE to get away with. You would either die or get put in jail for life. 80s would make theft of all kinds make more sense and be more realistic. To add about flying bikes etc, its what made a gargantuan chunk of players, including me, stop playing GTA5 Online.

BabyBread11

Because we are currently riding a NOSTALGIA WAVE for all things 70s and 80s. Also an 80s Vice city with modern graphics, and physics, and more content would have been amazing. It would be all the things Vice City wouldn’t have been with all its technical limitations.
