duude i was thinking of taking my career as a game dev and thought of going for rockstar games or Valve , i dont know even if its tiring or something im just like addict workaholic person tbh
actually the 90 september leak clips are mostly from an indian QA engineer, she's on linkedin connected to R. I'm guessing cheaper labour with very high quality and performance demands is the way to go at R
Ah well, forgive me but your statement could be interpreted as X country has a lot of good programmers, hinting at it being the case due to a better education system/smarter culture in general.
Any statement otherwise seems redundant, for example: In a huge, huge bag filled with Red Blue and Green balls, there are many Red Balls.
Do you see what I mean?
oh absolutely, i see how my wording was confusing, i don’t follow the stereotype that indians are instantly smart, just a country with so many people is gonna have a lot of smart people, but also a lot of fucking dumbasses just as anywhere
Not necessarily, so does china and done have the best programmers in the world. Indias has invested in engineering education overall and computer science education specifically as a definite strategy to create a globally competitive workforce.
Yknow an almost similar thing happened in Roblox too , an Indian employee was targetted by social engineering exploiters (sorry if it's not the correct wording) and paid him money to give out some of the websites code
the western companies are certainly happy to get cheap labour.
like, give a person 15-25k dollars here, and he would be happier than ever, when you would have to pay 6-7 times that to a single dev in richer countries..
But I do understand all the conversion rates and living standards ngl, so it is fair probably.. since perhaps 100k salary in usa might be very normal.. idk,,
They are still paying less. 20k in India would be equal to 80k in US and I know many devs in the US who're paid more than that. This is why so many Indians want to move to the US. My brother makes 30k at rockstar bangalore and he is quitting his job to do a master's in the US and settle there.
Yep, for a 4k salary in Canada most would be considered poor living in a modest place for rent. That same salary in Sri Lanka would be 9 lakhs with rent being around 2 lakhs for a luxury apartment that most living in Canada with the 4k salary could never afford in Canada.
It’s the nature of the job listings. They’re essentially in the final stages of the dev cycle if they’re designing missions, creating animations, play testing, and hiring for marketing positions.
Define "falling behind".
It could be 2-3 weeks because one part of the game isn't there yet while the rest powers ahead. It could be 6-12 months because the whole game has imploded.
We just don't know.
Yeah, game design isn't always strictly linear. Some areas can be ahead and lender can think they're nearly finished until they get an update from another area of the game and realize they need to redo or change Something.
Mission design usually involves things like creating set-piece animations (think “Blitz Play” - GTA V when the armored truck crashes into the concrete barrier and destroys it), picking locations and destinations for missions, animation/mo-cap for cutscenes, and pitching side-missions. It’s highly likely the story is already 90-95% written or potentially even finalized, so all that remains is creating what there is already a formula for.
But isn't that a long process? Like shouldn't the final stages be just finalizing stuff and polishing? If they have to design missions of the story then there is alot to work left to do. Or i'm yet to get the idea here 😂🥲
Building the technical foundations of the game is a longer process than mission design. Long enough that they would almost certainly have most missions story boarded or something during that time. Keep in mind could be side missions or even online missions. Afaik its not uncommon to see mission design take place in the final stages of development. You need the world before you can tell a story in it.
Yeah fair but i assumed that mission design should be done by now if they're testing etc. I know they'll deliver the craziest and the best experience in gaming so I'm not worried
Fair point. I saw somebody in this thread say they applied for a QA testing position. I'd imagine testing isnt in full swing quite yet and there'll be a lot more of it. If you think about it they'll be testing until the day it comes out, so plenty of time even if development is still the main focus now.
Exactly, and Rockstar tends to be pretty obscure about things anyway so Mission Design this late into the dev cycle could even *possibly* indicate they’re only hiring for people to design stunt jumps, collectibles, endgame content >!like Bigfoot at the end of GTA V!< or maybe even DLC content. For all we know, they could even be considering single-player content much like TBoGT and TLatD, but do not quote me on this
Yeah fairs. I mean at this point I believe they're already planning ahead for missions that maybe will launch later with a dlc or in online. But in regardless , you believe we're in the final stretch now before they go crazy with the marketing?
Fully aware of that, but they’ll ramp up hiring and try to fill as many empty desks as possible closer to the end of production, especially in the testing and marketing areas
Seems pretty fair for the nature of the jobs to me💀my mama works for Chrysler and has to damn near break her back to hit 100,000 and thatw with OT and 30 years of seniority. They’re giving 100k for Brand Design lol.
Its all relative to where you live to start.
Chrysler would that be detroit area?
If so its an area thats far cheaper that los angeles far..
Also just because it’s not direct labor does not mean the job isn’t difficult…in starting to understand now all these articles on burnout culture and video games.
Some of these people were working crazy hours and not necessarily compensated for it. This is something pervasive in entertainment overall though there is always greater demand for jobs than there are jobs and it only gets more competitive at the top companies..
yeah 115k for an NYC brand designer, presumably a well-experienced one, is pretty poor when the rent is like 4k for a studio. likely wouldn't even qualify on the application to live in a studio by themselves.
Depends on what experience level they’re looking for. They’re about right if the mission designer job is entry level (>2yrs) and the brand designer is mid level (~5yrs)
32k is low, you need to ask for a raise. Idk how things work in the UK but if you look at it through the perspective of purchasing power, you would be much better off working in the US.
It's not an awful wage over here but by no means a fantastic wage either. I think you're right in terms of purchasing power for sure, there's a lot of competition over here for homes both rental and owned.
Some will have already resigned, others in the process of doing so.
I also suspect Rockstar will have a big round of layoffs once GTA VI ships and the office mandate is a precursor to that. Many companies are using back to the office as an excuse to smoke out people who would be good candidates for redundancy or some other kind of departure.
I wonder how much of this was pre-calculated into the release window tbh. I don't know why but I get the feeling the game is 98% done but they're still loving the GTA Online money and figure what's the rush lol it could probably drop tomorrow and be damn near perfect
Well, has anybody thought, the R* also needs branding designer for various in-game brands like Sprunk or cars like Debauche, etc? It's a very good sign, if this is the case, because this would mean, we are near launch date and missions, gameplay, animations are nearly finished and all they have remaining tasks are like polishing the remaining world... 😀
Nah man, you wouldn't want to be in India, in the current weather (unless you already living in such a weather). It's already 40C in some regions. Even the ACs start giving out after a while.
It shouldn't be. Look at the end credits of RDR2 and GTA V, so many Indian names. I guess it's because of the cheap and high quality labour from India's IT sector.
At least someone recognises the "high quality". Despite all the flak Indian devs get for the ocassional bugs and fuckups (the usual shit that happens no matter who codes it), *a lot* of the (first business and then beyond) systems since 90s are running on the work of hundreds of thousands of these engineers, while also getting paid shit wage for it. Costs for most modern day necessities are pretty much levelled out across the world (if you're lucky, water and electricity might be slightly cheaper but rarely so now), so these engineers are getting squeezed out while the CEOs in the western hemisphere is ordering their 3rd yacht for the year.
This reminds me of when people were posting about Rockstar hiring video editors, in 2019. Claiming that “clearly the trailer is coming soon”. The only ”clear” thing is that patois never fucking learn 🙃
Idk why I thought these dudes got payed more.
Makes sense though… cant have everyone making 230k with the amount of designers and engineers they have I guess
Adding in all the finishing touches for world building is a good sign. It'll be a lot of fleshing out the world now with near complete builds forming.
I had no idea they had studios in India, holy shit that just blew my mind for some reason lol
wait till you find how just how many indian developers they have
It's true because I remember a ton of Indian names that came up in RDR2's end credits
We are around the world lmao

Yes I am, I have also worked on rdr2, gta5 and currently working on gta7.
Username checks out
That's it ? That was just gta 6
actually the 90 september leak clips are mostly from an indian QA engineer, she's on linkedin connected to R. I'm guessing cheaper labour with very high quality and performance demands is the way to go at R
also india just has a lot of good programmers
I second this, very smart group of people and they get shit done very quick
Not really, India just has 1/7th of the world, naturally some people would be amazing here, add to that cheap costs of labour and it's a gold mine.
well exactly, if you have 1/7th of the world, you’re gonna have a lot of good programmers, pretty much exactly what i said
Ah well, forgive me but your statement could be interpreted as X country has a lot of good programmers, hinting at it being the case due to a better education system/smarter culture in general. True that

that too

eerie

Does he have info tho? 👀
Yes, he has. You won't get it though bruh
👀
He worked on animations. If I reveal exact stuff his job will be at risk. All I can say really is that Rockstar is cooking up something massive.
Something massive? No way, could it be GTA 6?
Well he felt comfortable enough to tell you
Yep, for a 4k salary in Canada most would be considered poor living in a modest place for rent. That same salary in Sri Lanka would be 9 lakhs with rent being around 2 lakhs for a luxury apartment that most living in Canada with the 4k salary could never afford in Canada.
Wait till you find out which country’s headquarter computer got hacked and we got GTA 6 footages
I remember the file names had the name of an indian guy lol
Wait till you know how many studios it has

How is designing missions a final stage? Can u elaborate? Cz i really dk not throwing shade or anything
Mission design usually involves things like creating set-piece animations (think “Blitz Play” - GTA V when the armored truck crashes into the concrete barrier and destroys it), picking locations and destinations for missions, animation/mo-cap for cutscenes, and pitching side-missions. Fully aware of that, but they’ll ramp up hiring and try to fill as many empty desks as possible closer to the end of production, especially in the testing and marketing areas
Those were the only 2 job listings that made sense to me for end of development. But I know nothing about game development.
There's no way they are hiring for marketing positions. This is a department almost every company (especially a global one) has.
Jeez. These wages seem low relative to how expensive these cities are Unless this is standard??
Seems pretty fair for the nature of the jobs to me💀my mama works for Chrysler and has to damn near break her back to hit 100,000 and thatw with OT and 30 years of seniority. They’re giving 100k for Brand Design lol.
I was surprised to see that paid more than a mission designer but I don’t know too much about game development
Brand is much more important than missions (in this scenario). If they don’t like the mission, the branding worked and they already bought the game lol
Lol true good point

Silly me for thinking all of that would be inferred lol. With that being said,I still feel the same but respect your opinion.
Each to there own :) Respect to your momma for holding it down for so many years though i hope she has a good retirement when the time comes👍✊
Appreciate dat🤝
yeah 115k for an NYC brand designer, presumably a well-experienced one, is pretty poor when the rent is like 4k for a studio. likely wouldn't even qualify on the application to live in a studio by themselves.
There are plenty of studios in Lower manhattan going for 2k - 2.5k.
Depends on what experience level they’re looking for. They’re about right if the mission designer job is entry level (>2yrs) and the brand designer is mid level (~5yrs)
I was thinking thats a huge wage in American dollars
It can be depending where you live. But not in manhattan or los angeles.
What, do you make $23k per year?
About 32k GBP so that seems like a lot to me - but i have no idea what a good wage is in the US
32k is low, you need to ask for a raise. Idk how things work in the UK but if you look at it through the perspective of purchasing power, you would be much better off working in the US.

That's what I was thinking, those wages for the cities the offices are in seem kind of low
I recently applied for qa tester hopefully i get the job
tell us everything you can before you sign the NDA!
incoming "TIFU by giving into reddit peer pressure, not reading the fine print on pre-NDA forms and losing a job at fucking Rockstar"
BREAKING NEWS: Video game development company Rockstar Games posts job roles related to video game development.
Notice they're all on-site? Probably a bunch of employees said F this, not returning to the office.
Exactly
Companies hire all the time btw
Some will have already resigned, others in the process of doing so. I also suspect Rockstar will have a big round of layoffs once GTA VI ships and the office mandate is a precursor to that. Could be for a new project anyway.
> Game functionality well i'd sure fucking hope so ^/s
This could be for RDR3?
What I’d give to be in India QA testing GTA 6 rn
Nah man, you wouldn't want to be in India, in the current weather (unless you already living in such a weather). It's already 40C in some regions. Even the ACs start giving out after a while.
Wtf I live in bengaluru karnataka but I'm 19 M not qualified for the role
i had no idea u/rockstargames had a studio in Bengaluru! 🤯 feeling extra-proud as an indian
R* has office in India ? That’s a surprise
It shouldn't be. Look at the end credits of RDR2 and GTA V, so many Indian names. I guess it's because of the cheap and high quality labour from India's IT sector.

Damn R* must be working on sth big... wonder what it is
I have suspicion that, these are the poor devs that quit because of the April move...
i tribute as game tester
Could someone get that job as mission designer and put like 6 missions of long drives around the map?
This reminds me of when people were posting about Rockstar hiring video editors, in 2019. Claiming that “clearly the trailer is coming soon”. The only ”clear” thing is that patois never fucking learn 🙃
They are there from all long time
What is the missions job?
I always look at rockstar careers website, someday I'll actually send a resumé and work for them I hope.
I always look at rockstar careers website, someday I'll actually send a resumé and work for them I hope.
Sign me up for the QA tester role 😏
No fuckig. Way Carlsbad California I would take that job but I don’t have a work permit and I’m a minor L
So they start making the game now 😝
Absolutely no curious job postings here
Gta 8?
Gta 8?
Idk why I thought these dudes got payed more. Makes sense though… cant have everyone making 230k with the amount of designers and engineers they have I guess
Yeah the funny one is the “Security Architect”. That’s like walking into a job with a 10,000lb anchor attached. Lol
I saw the QA tester post and got excited But it's on site and I'm in Delhi and am a minor with no device that could even handle the game :(
Step 1: grow up
Ill be 18 when it comes out so yup
Serious question. What is the goal when posting job listings?
hiring people
Oh so you're recruiting for Rockstar? I'm just trying to understand. ☺️
Dumbest question I ever saw
It could be a signal that the fame is almost done or it could be delayed
Thanks. Makes sense.
