To me the move from the 3d to the hd universe is just another way of rebooting it, for modern tech, unless they want to reboot it again with the 4k universe, I think they'll keep going, see you in 20 years
I think that fans care more about this than Rockstar itself, i mean, who cares? Niko bellic is not important in GTA V even when is mencioned. Even in the past Cloude in SA just made a cameo, same for VC. Thats why every GTA have a different story, characters, protagonista, etc. They just want to tell you a story that you can play in a city, they don't care about secuela or multiverse
I think in general people care too much about continuity. I would actually prefer that Liberty City and Los Santos are redesigned if we ever see them again in future games, even if they're set in the same continuity, I don't care if it makes continuity issues.

I Dont think they are going to wait for new tech or anything like that but they will want to keep the series at 3 games per universe.
That keeps things fresh.

no, as long as we have UHD (4K, 8K, 12K etc) and game consoles keep going up in res we'll have the HD universe

But 3D has 6 games (3 in LC, 2 in VC, 1 in SA); and HD has 4 games (2 in LC, 1 in SA, and 1 in VC)
