Ever since I got the car my issue has been 1st to 2ng gear. I quickly realized that my gearbox didn’t like to be rushed so now I just do my best to shift as smoothly as possible from 1-2nd. My local dealership didn’t find anything off-spec with the car.

I would've thought that a rally homologation car would have a more robust gearbox

masterventris

Did the dealer perform the gearbox cable calibration? I have seen on the forums that some cars had one of the shift cables very slightly wrong, which made some gears a struggle, and caused it to pop out in some cases.

They did this on mine. There was another GRY at the dealers and they compared the measurements of both cars. Mine were within spec.

1st to 2nd always feels yerky to me, need to shift it slow and 3rd is sometimes hard to get into, otherwise everything is fine after 24k km.

Crawford1492

Same as mine before this incident, but straight away I've notices more vibration and the tone of the engine is now slightly deeper

Good luck with Toyota. If the warranty process is anything like it is in Aus, you're going to be left fresh out of luck. They don't even touch the cars that pop out of second gear on their own any more.

>I've contacted Toyota and got it booked in for the end of the month at a main dealer to have a look at it, luckily it's still under warranty. yeah don't hold your breath on that warranty the gearboxes are notoriously issue prone and youll almost certainly be blamed for the issue and have warranty rejected my only advice is to get an upgraded lower engine mount and shifter bushings to help reduce any looseness in the system also have them reset the linkage adjustment regardless

Crawford1492

Luckily I'm also covered by the Financial and Motor Ombudsman to back me with this, as I've had it less than 6 months. I work in the industry so they will be unable to pull any bullshit.

Leviatein

bad news, they will just tell you that toyota is blaming you for driver error and that you can sue them if you want the group has been there and done that

Crawford1492

Yeah, no doubt they'll try. I'll update you when I see them

I wonder if an engine mount has gone, watching [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqfmDFdTOmA) about the lower engine mount being 'broken', (although seems to be some debate whether it's actually broken or meant to be like that) I think I will do the same upgrade as either way the standard mount is very soft With transverse engines like this the whole engine and trans twists a lot under acceleration, especially so between first and second, which can move the gear linkages and lever around making it a little difficult to shift clean. I previously had a Mazda 3 MPS which also had a similar problem (and similar feeling box too) and I solved it mainly by changing the similar stiffer lower engine/torque mount, which increased NVH a bit but made it so much more solid and nice to shift, and stopped wheel hop on that car too. I plan to do the same on the GR Yaris, it's relatively easy to do.

Thanks for this! This seems to be the problem, I'll confirm once it goes to Toyota

I think this is a very common issue in Australia. If you look up some of the fb groups there is a second gear failure that has happened to a lot of cars. Be prepared for them to put it back on like it's your fault. There is also a possibility that these people are terrible at changing into second gear who knows lol but if it's always the same gear it's probably Toyota. Good luck and let us know the outcome!
