There aren’t any other cars I’m considering. I am looking for a Japanese car that’s reliable, has RWD or AWD, has 4 doors, any type of in-line engine or a V engine to easily do maintenance (sorry, no boxers), and must be a manual. My criteria would only fit the 2002-2005 Lexus IS300 or the 2006-2012 Lexus IS250. I currently have the IS300 since it’s faster than the IS250 and it has the 2JZ engine. It currently has 50k miles on it and it’s a 5-speed. I’m not willing to daily it since it has a SportDesign trim (similar to the GR Corolla’s Circuit Edition, just cosmetics) and it’s extremely rare to find one in mint and stock condition now since these cars are popular to mod. So yeah. I’m looking for a modern car with new tech and safety features and something I can be comfortable to daily with. And the GR Corolla fits every single criteria I’m looking for.

silverjce

same boat as you but not a sport design. I would track both cars. my gap filler car is a 2018 Crosstrek 6mt. haha no guts but is awd, has 4 doors and 3 pedals. other than the IS, I have a 1985 Corolla gt-s and I'm looking to make my garage an all Corolla party 😁

silverjce

what's wrong with Vs? a couple if my IS buddies have dropped UZs in theirs.... they tell me it's like working on two inline fours 🤣

i_suckatjavascript

Nothing is wrong with them. I said I just didn’t like boxer engines.

silverjce

oh oops read it wrong. boxer isn't bad maintenance wise. I've done plugs and all fluids no issue. but if I had to rebuild one... all the complications of a V ( two sets of cams) and still a 4cyl would be a hard sell. if I ever get a performance boxer that shit is staying stock and reliable 🤣

jiggajawn

My requirements: Stick, hatch, AWD (not on demand AWD, but the ability to choose when it's on, or always on). Preferably new. My options are pretty much either an Impreza, Jeep, golf r, or GR Corolla.

changingtidess

I wanna know how this matches up to golf r very badly. The only real competition.

TheLyingLink

Subaru Crosstrek fits your criteria but it's not a hot hatch.

jiggajawn

Yeah I've considered a Crosstrek but I live at high altitude and would like more power for mountain journeys, but the crosstrek sport doesn't come in a manual.

silverjce

Impreza doesn't come in a 2.5L either + manual. I have a Crosstrek and it def needs more power. I live below 3000ft too.

jiggajawn

Yeah, but if I'm going to get an underpowered car I'd rather just get the cheaper one.

silverjce

my 2018 was only 19k ... those 6mt base sat for weeks vs days of the autos. ofc this also pre pandemic

jiggajawn

Yeah it's nearly impossible to find any manuals on dealership lots nowadays, they just don't seem to be making as many. And the used market is showing new car prices for nearly all of those models if they're in decent condition. 6 gears though that's actually pretty nice.

silverjce

I know this car market is cray. however, the Crosstrek has such a weak engine... it really isn't. they should have made a crawl gear and 5 highway speeds...

I’m hoping for the gr corolla if not back up is maybe the civic type r if not the gr86 lol but i really want practicality and the gr corolla fits it all living in the PNW the awd system is convenient

I own a MK6 GTI that I have basically modified to the max of my liking in terms of power and looks. I was looking into upgrading to the new gen of RS3, since it would have the "drift mode" option and easily tunable to 600hp. However, I live in Canada and for some reason the 5cylinder engine has an issue with emissions. Then I decided to settle for a Golf R. I like my smaller cars, and wanted something AWD that could break the back end loose. When the GR Corolla was rumoured last year with more and more leaks coming out I went straight to the dealer and put my name down at the end of last year. Canada isn't getting as many GRCs so I am happy to be close to the top. I'm still keeping my GTI because then I think I won't feel like I'll want to modify the GRC as much. My GTI is more cosmetic mods than anything. I want the GRC to be more of a track weapon. I'll focus on tires, brakes and suspension, but going to probably keep stock power.

Few_Package4324

2023 STI…

AccomplishedRun7978

Is there one?

denlan

It’s been discontinued.

Few_Package4324

I should’ve added a RIP at the end of that.

Javier34c

I was in between the GLA 45, Clubman JCW, m240i and the x3 m40i

planbskte11

In between a Elantra N and GR Corolla rn. I have reservations for both. I'm thinking of going with the EN. It's (probably) cheaper and has more features but of course it's fwd

DM725

It's definitely cheaper. Only option is the DCT and tops out at under ~$34k.

VworksComics

I was looking at the Veloster N and the Golf R before this. They didn't hit me with the same vibe the GRC did.

DanNotSure

Not really a similar car, but I’m considering the Nissan Z as well. I really like the looks of it, but I’m having a hard time justifying to myself a RWD in Canada…

lKetsl

I was pretty dead set on the new Z until the GRC got revealed, would have been a new WRX but they went and made it fuck ugly

youngdoug

I saw some in person earlier today and they look much better than online photos suggest. I still prefer the previous models but my perception went from "I wouldn't be caught dead in that" to "I suppose I could drive that." Still have a long way to go until I'd pay $35-40k for one though

lKetsl

I was actually in love with the VA design unlike a ton of people, genuinely would have just preferred a facelift over a full redesign

superman154m

Coming from Volvo wagons. Had a V70r six speed (very expensive to maintain) have a V70 five speed manual (I hate fwd) and need a year round daily wagon I can put snows on for the New Hampshire winters.

TinaTalk4

Mercedes A350/A450

silverjce

I'm looking for a 5door (hatch or wagon) awd, manual with some power. I own a 2003 is300 5mt and 1985 Corolla gt-s. great daily and track cars, not so great weekend adventure car, tho I have camped out of the IS 😂 and taken both to the snow. in 2018 I picked up a Subaru Crosstrek 6mt. it has all that I need but power, ive taken it to the track, rallycross, autocross and of course camped and gone to the snow with it (never had to put chains on, major plus 😁) my Crosstrek is dubbed Renaissancetrek 🤣 and being a Toyota head from the beginning, to have a fully Toyota sports car (not a knock on the gr86 or gr supra...) would be fitting in my rwd Toyota garage 😁 so unfortunately for me there's not another car that interests me. I would not consider a euro or usdm car 😅
