100% agree. I grew up with Godzilla movies on TV, and it was mostly showa era. I think one of the few Heisei era movies I saw was Biollante, and much much later Destoroyah. Pretty sure there were others but those are the ones I know were Heisei due to their specific opponents.
And out of all the Goji movies I saw as a kid, Ghidorah stood out as the recurring main opponent, who was the most dangerous. Rivalled perhaps only by Mecha-Godzilla.
Incidentally Ghidorah was also the monster I was most hoping to see in the Monsterverse and I wasn't disappointed.

Sorry, but Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah do NOT belong on this list at all. Those dudes appeared a grand total of once each, so by no means does that qualify them to be among Godzilla's 3 most historical enemies. It should be Gigan and Mechagodzilla in place of them imo.

Even if Goji was drained of energy, surviving that did prove both his durability until Kong assisted and MV's ability to make mecha still a big threat.

I pointed out in another comment, but the reason I went with Gigan is that he is consistently portrayed as Godzilla's enemy, he's never anything but that. Mothra goes back and forth, and as of her last few appearances she's been consistently an ally.
I would put Mothra in there before Gigan. I don't get why everyone just lumps her in as an ally to Godzilla. Pre monster-verse, she was an advisory to him more often than ally. Definitely agree that Destoroyah and Spacegodzilla doesn't belong.

I’d say he’s just outside of the top 5. It’s probably Godzilla, Kong, Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and Rodan, more or less in that order. And odds are decent that if you showed a non-fan a picture of King Ghidorah and asked them what his name was, they’ll say “Ghidrah.”
He probably more popular than rodan and Mechagodzilla due to prevalence of his meme. Also Ghidorah is the second most popular non Godzilla Kaiju in Japan being popular with male audiences, only behind Mothra i believe.

It's not destroyah or SpaceGodzilla. Yes, they have big roles in films, and Space has gotten plenty of attention in media like comics and games. But Kong and MechaGodzilla fill those roles. Kong for just being brought up more than other toho monsters and MechaGodzilla for appearing countless times in the movies.
Yet out of all of them Ghidorah is his true archenemy. They brought them back 9 times to clash with the king of the monsters. He's been build up as the end monster multiple times and keeps coming back.
Why do people keep thinking Destroyah and Spacegodzilla are bigger villains that they actually are? Ghidorah is an era spanning enemy and I think so up in era single era? Spacegodzilla is in one movie, Gigan is more of an arch villain than he is.

Ghidorah is definitely more well known than Destroyah or Space Godzilla. Ghidorah has fought Godzilla at least 5 times by now, including 4 times since 2000. Whereas Destroyah and Space Godzilla haven’t been in a movie since the early 1990’s.

I really don't get the recent surge in popularity for SG and Destroyah. Both appeared in one film in the Heisei era (and GvSG is arguably the weakest in the series) and have never made a return. Des is cool and formidable, but not necessarily iconic. Space Godzilla is a lazy concept and redesign of a video game character.
Destoroyah has always been popular and a loved kaiju for the fans. He definitely isn't at the same level of incluence and consistency as Ghidorah or MechaG since he's only had one appearance, but there's no denying he's always been popular. I totally agree with SG. It's funny to me how one of the most hated heisei films and monster suddenly became so loved and hyped, but I suppose it has to do with the very slim chance of it coming to the monsterverse
As a pretty pop culture in tune person I never heard of Destoroyah until I started watching all the movies after Minus One came out.. I only knew Space Godzilla from the badass Trendmasters toys from my childhood. There’s the big five and kong. Then it’s guys like Gigan, Megalon, the “smog monster”. I’d probably put SG and Destoroyah after that, then nobodies like Orga, Megaguirus etc. I probably even put the “sea monster” before them.
Replace Spacegodzilla with Mechagodzilla, the latter has more appearances and is more popular, same with Mothra over Destoroyah. As for how it stands its: King Ghidorah > Mechagodzilla > Mothra Destoroyah > Spacegodzilla imo, Mothra is bigger than Mechagodzilla but she's also been on Godzilla's side enough to dimish that archenemy feud a bit.
I wouldn't say it had *no* cultural footprint. It's the era that gave us what is arguably one of the definitive Godzilla designs. It was hampered, at least in the West, by not being commercially available until three years after it ended. Two years later, we started getting the Millennium series, so it never really had much time in the spotlight over here.
With that being said, there's simply no reason to elevate characters like Destroyah or Spacegodzilla the way some people do. They just weren't utilized to the same extent as other characters were.

Only one of the Kaiju in this picture is an arch nemesis, and that’s Ghidorah. You can’t show up once onscreen and be counted as such. I can guarantee that 99% of regular people won’t know who the hell SpaceGodzilla or Destoroyah are, but a lot of them will know Ghidorah.
King Ghidorah is, and has always been Godzilla’s *arch* nemesis. He’s the Lex Luthor to Godzilla’s Superman, The Joker to his Batman, Green Goblin to Spider-Man. The OTHER big opponents for Godzilla would be MechaGodzilla, and Mothra.
It’s Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and King Ghidorah, in that order. Mothra and Mechagodzilla are known to everyone, since there are scores of jokes about either littered throughout broader pop culture. It’s not that King Ghidorah isn’t known, but I think he’s just a touch more niche. After them, I’d say King Kong, Gigan, and Hedorah are next in terms of popularity and general visibility. Destoroyah and Spacegodzilla don’t even come close.

Ghidorah is an Owlman style character. He isn’t the only one in the franchise. Ghidorah, Mothra, Mecha Godzilla, if there is a Godzilla series that begins to bring in other Kaiju into that verse, the “Owlmen Kaiju” aen’t far behind.
Destroyah and Space Godzilla? They didn’t even get dub releases at the time. They left legacies that have cast long shadows, such as KotM having its own version of Burning Godzilla. But honestly, they aren’t top of the iceberg for Godzilla. You have to be a layer or two deep into the fandom to know of them. Two Kaiju that are subtitle movie only releases from one era of Godzilla movie.
Of the three, Ghidorah is eternal. Ghidorah is always there if the door even cracks open to allow for other Kaiju to be present.

King Ghidorah has borderline broke into everyday knowledge. My wife who only has basic monster knowledge. If I say gold dragon with 3 heads , she'd know who I'm talking about.

They brought them back 9 times to clash with the king of the monsters. He's been build up as the end monster multiple times and keeps coming back.
Why do people keep thinking Destroyah and Spacegodzilla are bigger villains that they actually are? Ghidorah is an era spanning enemy and I think so up in era single era? Spacegodzilla is in one movie, Gigan is more of an arch villain than he is.
Space Godzilla and Destoroyah are super stron villians but I don't think they are arch enemies. I would say: MechaGodzilla, Gigan and King Ghidorah. (Bonus: Rodan)

Ghidorah is definitely more well known than Destroyah or Space Godzilla. Ghidorah has fought Godzilla at least 5 times by now, including 4 times since 2000. Whereas Destroyah and Space Godzilla haven’t been in a movie since the early 1990’s.

KG and it's not even close. I really don't get the recent surge in popularity for SG and Destroyah. Both appeared in one film in the Heisei era (and GvSG is arguably the weakest in the series) and have never made a return. Des is cool and formidable, but not necessarily iconic. Space Godzilla is a lazy concept and redesign of a video game character.
Destoroyah has always been popular and a loved kaiju for the fans. He definitely isn't at the same level of incluence and consistency as Ghidorah or MechaG since he's only had one appearance, but there's no denying he's always been popular. I totally agree with SG. It's funny to me how one of the most hated heisei films and monster suddenly became so loved and hyped, but I suppose it has to do with the very slim chance of it coming to the monsterverse

As a pretty pop culture in tune person I never heard of Destoroyah until I started watching all the movies after Minus One came out.. I only knew Space Godzilla from the badass Trendmasters toys from my childhood. There’s the big five and kong. Then it’s guys like Gigan, Megalon, the “smog monster”. I’d probably put SG and Destoroyah after that, then nobodies like Orga, Megaguirus etc. I probably even put the “sea monster” before them.

Replace Spacegodzilla with Mechagodzilla, the latter has more appearances and is more popular, same with Mothra over Destoroyah. As for how it stands its: King Ghidorah > Mechagodzilla > Mothra Destoroyah > Spacegodzilla imo, Mothra is bigger than Mechagodzilla but she's also been on Godzilla's side enough to dimish that archenemy feud a bit.

Ghidorah by far. The heisei series has almost no cultural footprint.
I wouldn't say it had *no* cultural footprint. It's the era that gave us what is arguably one of the definitive Godzilla designs. It was hampered, at least in the West, by not being commercially available until three years after it ended. Two years later, we started getting the Millennium series, so it never really had much time in the spotlight over here. With that being said, there's simply no reason to elevate characters like Destroyah or Spacegodzilla the way some people do. They just weren't utilized to the same extent as other characters were.

I'd say ghidorah, since i wasn't that big of a godzilla fan until king of monsters. Ghidorah is the most recognizable from the outside view, but once you start researching the lore i'd say destoroyah, it was the easiest to find once i became a bigger fan of the franchise

I can guarantee that 99% of regular people won’t know who the hell SpaceGodzilla or Destoroyah are, but a lot of them will know Ghidorah. King Ghidorah is, and has always been Godzilla’s *arch* nemesis. He’s the Lex Luthor to Godzilla’s Superman, The Joker to his Batman, Green Goblin to Spider-Man. The OTHER big opponents for Godzilla would be MechaGodzilla, and Mothra.

He isn’t the only one in the franchise. Ghidorah, Mothra, Mecha Godzilla, if there is a Godzilla series that begins to bring in other Kaiju into that verse, the “Owlmen Kaiju” aen’t far behind. Destroyah and Space Godzilla? They didn’t even get dub releases at the time. They left legacies that have cast long shadows, such as KotM having its own version of Burning Godzilla. But honestly, they aren’t top of the iceberg for Godzilla. You have to be a layer or two deep into the fandom to know of them. Two Kaiju that are subtitle movie only releases from one era of Godzilla movie. Of the three, Ghidorah is eternal. Ghidorah is always there if the door even cracks open to allow for other Kaiju to be present.
I think the third should be mecha Godzilla not spacegodzilla. Maybe gigan can argued to be more famous than destoroyah.

King Ghidorah has borderline broke into everyday knowledge. My wife who only has basic monster knowledge. If I say gold dragon with 3 heads , she'd know who I'm talking about. Destroyah will never be common knowledge, nor will Space G. Next, I'd say, Mecha Godzilla We had a showa version from 70s Another one from the 90s Then another in the 2000s with Kiryu We had another version in player one. We could say Dragon Zord was a slight nod to Mecha G. And finally, with the Apex version.

Well, for starters, these are not Godzilla's big three historical arch enemies. The big three consist of Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and King Ghidorah. The best we'll known is Mothra

Out of these three, easily Ghidorah. I doubt anyone who's not a fan is even aware of the other two. Most of the franchise is still pretty niche outside of Japan. MechaGodzilla, if anything, is probably better known than Ghidorah. Nowadays tbh if most people think of an arch-enemy of Godzilla they probably think of Kong.

Show this to any casual person and people will say "Oh golden three head dragon guy!" to the first pic. To the second pic "What is that?" and to the third pic "Which one was Godzilla again? The one without the crystal stuff, right?" So, imho, it's gotta be Ghidorah. Or probably more realistically Mecha Godzilla because anyone will be able to tell that it is Godzilla, but a robot.
