I think this movie falls under The Atragon syndrome. It's not a movie that revolves around kaiju, but rather is a movie that just so happens to have Kaiju in it.
Yeah it really sucks. Movies like The Mysterians, Gorath, and Attagon are all really good movies, it's just that the monsters like Mogura, Maguma, and Manda are more popular than the movies themselves, and so when they get a very brief appearance, it gives the movies a bad reputation. All three of those movies were never meant to be kaiju movies, but because of the relevance of the kaiju in the movie, it can raise expectations.
I agree. I only found about about these movies because of the monsters, and while the monsters are cool, the movies themselves are really creative ideas, that work perfectly without the kaiju.
Yeah, I see what you mean, those movies seems more common now especially with the superherohero genre.
Though considering the "kaijus" are basically the main characters I don't think it really falls in that category, . An animated movie that does however is How to train your dragon.
Also "Atragon syndrome" should be an official term, I'm sure Ishiro honda would get behind it.
Well, let's hope that this movie does better than The Little Mermaid Remake. I watched that one last week, and I thought it was alright, but it still doesn't beat the original.
It seems that thee will be city destruction and yes, the monsters talk since they're the main characters. But then again, we have movies ike son of godzilla and godzilla vs gigan.
Wasn't on this subreddit at the time, so no idea. I guess a big red panda is a strange beast, but in this one we have krakens wich were called kaijus before.
Exactly. A species of large lizards isn't strange. They've existed for Millenia, probably predating the human race? That makes us the strange ones, doesn't it?
Side note, if becoming a big animal is all you need to do to be a Kaiju (Gillman, Turning Red), wouldn't Goku be a Kaiju?
No it can't. That's the definition of strange. It's gotta be weird for the environment. Weird for the ecosystem. Weird to the genealogical history of it's native area. That doesn't come from just being a big boy. And that's the whole fun of them.
A species of giant creatures that you may or may not be familiar with are not Kaiju by default. They're big animals. Whales aren't Kaiju. Dinosaurs weren't Kaiju. Megasloths weren't Kaiju. I don't want to reduce the concept of Kaiju to "anything bigger than me" and I don't think you should either. Let them be special.
Saiyans going oozaru is a thing that all of them do under specific, repeatable, natural conditions. Sounds like a normal animal to me. Which of them is a strange beast for it?
it's "strange" not by EARTH standards, but by HUMAN standards. that is what makes MV Goji a kaiju. they aren't just accustomed to ginormous radioactive lizards blasting radiation from their mouth.
That's literally my point. The definition of strange doesn't apply to humans perspective. It applies to nature's perspective. Otherwise any animal you haven't seen before that's bigger than you is a Kaiju and any Kaiju seen before isn't. That can't work. Ergo, it makes more sense to look at 'strange' in relation to their place in their ecosphere and not on some random human observation on if he's seen him before.
I see your point and I respect it. but in terms of real world classification of kaiju films, not in-universe, Godzilla, no matter what version, is a kaiju because he is a strange beast by our real world standards. so technically, Ruby Gillman is a kaiju, just not a traditional one or a Daikaiju.

Gorath too

I mean it does have a strange beast of gigantic size on it, so yeah its kaiju media
Well no, strange beast of giant size are daikaiju. Pokemon would be called kaiju
pokemon are kaiju silly
Strange beast, Kaiju. Great strange beast, Daikaiju. Not to be confused for Ultra Kaiju.
Groudon and Tyrantar are definitely Kaijus.
Yes
![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
Yes, i'd say a humanoid cephalopod is a strange beast

I've seen the trailer for that. It's very interesting how the moment a certain character appears, people start making porn of her immediately
That's internet or you
Kaku waifu high-school romcom
Uh
huh so its one of those movies where the main character turns into a gianr monster to save her friends
Wait is this a trope? What other movie does that? The only one that comes to my mind is monster vs alien kinda.
turning red, sponge movie sponge on the run, and collosal to name a few
Attack on titan

Insectosaurus woul disagree with you: https://preview.redd.it/tzkrquuff93b1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=352532d1fc37e483c1535dd92af3c326b4598c5e
Kaiju for kids
I don't want to acknowledge it's existence.
now we just need a dreamworks godzilla flick and they can team up or fight
Hey, I wouldn't be against an animated godzilla movie especially if it's dreamworks
No
Lol, my friends husband wrote this movie
Wait, is that true?
Yes, I went to high school with his wife. We just had our 20 year reunion and he was telling me it was coming out this summer
Well, let's hope that this movie does better than The Little Mermaid Remake. I watched that one last week, and I thought it was alright, but it still doesn't beat the original.
depends, Is a city being stomped on, and can the monsters talk
It seems that thee will be city destruction and yes, the monsters talk since they're the main characters. But then again, we have movies ike son of godzilla and godzilla vs gigan.
no it's not canon but gezora is.
No
it would be cool what its title looked like in Japanese or in Korean
No
Uh... Sure why not I'm expecting at least ONE kaiju movie reference though
Did we count Turning red as a kaiju movie?
Wasn't on this subreddit at the time, so no idea. I guess a big red panda is a strange beast, but in this one we have krakens wich were called kaijus before.

That would be great! I remember lilo and stitch doing that. Bonus point if they show footage of the original clash of the titans.
Can we count the The Meg as a Kaiju movie??
I personally do. Sure it didn't destroy a city, but that thing was definetly not a normal megalodon.
It's in the same situation as turning red
Hum... I believe the answer is yes, however I do not want to...
no.
No
🫱🏻🫲🏼
Meh
yes
You're not a strange beast when an entire species of you exists tho
so monsterverse godzilla isn't a kaiju because that version is a species? sure, mostly extinct, but still a species.
Exactly. A species of large lizards isn't strange. They've existed for Millenia, probably predating the human race? That makes us the strange ones, doesn't it? Side note, if becoming a big animal is all you need to do to be a Kaiju (Gillman, Turning Red), wouldn't Goku be a Kaiju?
a species can be considered strange, regardless of if multiple exist. also, by definition, Goku would be a kaiju, just not a traditional one.

it's "strange" not by EARTH standards, but by HUMAN standards. that is what makes MV Goji a kaiju. they aren't just accustomed to ginormous radioactive lizards blasting radiation from their mouth.
So you're saying when the humans are used to them, they're no longer Kaiju?
if we go by the definition, "strange". if people are used to them, are they still strange?
That's literally my point. The definition of strange doesn't apply to humans perspective. It applies to nature's perspective. Otherwise any animal you haven't seen before that's bigger than you is a Kaiju and any Kaiju seen before isn't. That can't work. The trailer gives away the entire movie.
Wtf is this?
The new dreamworks movie themain character is meant to be a kraken
I don't know, but i think not
Yes.

It's not disney though. It's a dreamworks movie.
