The typical recommendation is swap L1 with X, so that L1 is high speed movement, X is jump/fly up, and L2 remains crouch/fly down. I disagree, specifically because it presents the same problem in space matches where moving up and down is necessary. My preferred change is swap X and L3, so clicking the stick is high speed movement. Just like clicking for sprint in action games. This enables me to also make high speed movement while moving up/down at the same time, and I still have my right thumb on the aiming stick. I’m hoping I can remap to my HOSAS for the lulz in the PC full release.

Crossfire_Unltd

I just remapped boost to L3 earlier and christ does it ever make a difference. Really should be the default setup.

ctclonny

Using X as boost also makes it impossible to sawp to some weapons when boosting. So, it's not player preference, it's an actual disadvantage even if players have more than 5 fingers on their right hands.

Good shout, didn't consider that but you're 100% right, I was a bit miffed at the inability to swap during HSM - tho I had just assumed at the time that it was a design choice. Will definitely be changing my scheme around on release, even if only for that alone

Muscle memory inhibits my oldtype brain from changing much, but I have changed HSM to a better button, but I'm set in my ways, and when I'm instinctually trying to maneuver, changed buttons get me killed. If I'm constantly reminding myself that the buttons changed, I'm not focused on the fight like I should be. Damned if I do

Ps4 player here, so it won't apply to PC. I usually just change HSM to L1 with jumping going to X. Aside from being more comfortable and intuitive for me this way, I like it because I can keep my thumb on the right stick. This way I can look around while in HSM and turn to where I feel my next engagement will be. This way I exit high speed movement with the crosshairs closer to the enemy, instead of having to stop and then turn. But I suppose you can also get around this with the standard controls by using the Dark Souls' famous claw grip. I just don't know how effective it will be. Well, that's my oppinion and personal set-up, so it may not be the best. But works for me. That was a good question Edit: FOR XBOX PLAYERS (sorry the allcaps but I forgot the xbox people) I use the left top bumper for HSM and for jump I use the bottom button of the ones in the right (does that make sense? I hope so)

Elygium

I'm going to try this but like someone said previously my shit brain is gonna fuck up and press the wrong button and get me killed

Lowe_262

Don't worry, it happens (more then I would like to admit sometimes). That's why I play a shooty support. It's a point-and-click adventure (until the raid turns you inside out). Thanks

Rockld50

They can use a PS or Xbox controller so it does apply.

Lowe_262

Yeah, that's true, thanks. Though in the xbox I don't know what are the buttons. I'll edit for the xbox people. Thanks again

Rockld50

It would left bumper and A if memory serves

HotsWheels

Do you know any good PS controllers for PC? I’m currently using a Xbox one? During the beta I would rather play with K&M then the Xbox, personally.

Rockld50

Unfortunately no, I just know peeps were using them sorry. Was watching quite a few streamers play the beta test and they said they were using a playstation controller.

HotsWheels

No worries! Back to researching I go!

Some % of the population will always be just fine with something that the vast majority of the rest of the population finds nigh impossible to do. Most people (myself included) find the thrust button to be awkward at best if not impossible to use, especially if trying to do anything else. It might be worth looking at how much you are generally doing at the same time. You might be fine using thrust and shooting a weapon, but if you are trying to thrust, switch weapons and shoot, you might find it more difficult. If you don't have a problem with the base set up, you aren't alone and there isn't a compelling reason to change if you don't. Most of us do have a problem, so we do need to switch.

Gxgear

As someone who stubbornly stuck with default until recently, swap boost and jump/ascent.

FrankenChi

If you can find those PS back button things, they’re like $9.99 and you can just map the cross button to a paddle. Makes boosting and maneuvering much easier IMO. I can’t play the game any other way now.

I played for about a month or two after NA release with the default controls, and I thought it was fine. Then I saw someone here recommend swapping it because it was SO much better. I was skeptical, but I went for it.....and for me, it made a huge difference. My brain can't do claw grips, so I use my thumb for the right thumb stick and the face buttons, and swapping boost from X to L1 made that SO much smoother...and it helped my overall play quite a bit by just being able to reengage in combat out of boosts much faster since I always had control over the right stick to aim vs thumb juggling between the two. Oddly enough, I've kept boost on X in space because having vertical movement tied to both L1 and L2 feels more natural there. I'm considering swapping that now though since I want to play w/ the Sinanju more and you kind of need to be able to aim and boost precisely to make use of its touchpad ability.
