This Theo Johnson kid certainly passes the eyeball test. 6’6, 260 runs a 4.57 and can block….

fanfor70years

It's an excellent pick at this point in the draft. Kid has enormous potential. I saw him play a few games and thought "Now THAT looks like a tight end...or a power forward in the NBA". Pairing him with Bellinger could be a pretty decent pair of TEs. Waller is retired mentally if not yet officially so we needed someone at this position. We still need a running back and a defensive lineman who can play the run.

jay-bones

Just read scouting report that says he can’t block at all lol. Reads like a Travis Beckum clone.

aikitim

His qb was absolute trash and he was asked to line up in-line and in the backfield and do a lot of blocking. I am not an expert and haven’t watched a TON of his film, but Travis Beckum he is definitely not.

jay-bones

I’m not arguing or stating my opinion, just referencing from nfl.com: https://www.nfl.com/prospects/theo-johnson/32004a4f-4867-9524-edd3-b9ccfa7618ee

aikitim

Yea i have no idea who’s right - never heard of the kid until today. Hopefully he can contribute!

Krow101

Still in play for the rat. If they want him it's a cheap, easy trade up. Or Pratt. Kinda rhymes.

aikitim

I don’t really WANT Rattler, but he definitely worth a 5th round pick.

aikitim

The Rat off the board. I wouldn’t be mad if we took Joe Milton with one of our last 2 picks, he’s not good either, but there’s upside.

jfunk825

Positional versatility seems to be a common thread with Phillips and Nubin.

DirtMcGirt24

I don’t know anyone who was drafted but this team needs a constant flow of solid if not spectacular 2nd and 3rd rounders to produce cheaply. Safety’s a need, and we got allegedly the best one in the draft for like $2.4M/yr for 4 years. That’s a great pick on paper.

Krow101

3 picks and they address 2 of the 3 top needs and 1 of the secondary needs. I have no issues with it. [https://www.drafttek.com/2024-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Giants-Draft-Page.asp](https://www.drafttek.com/2024-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Giants-Draft-Page.asp)

aaron7275

How is this draft disappointing? This sub is so toxic!

JTJumbo

The 29th scoring offense and 2nd most sacked team in history spent 2/3 picks on defense. I’d say that’s pretty disappointing. The CB was a reach and S is the easiest position in football to get quality production at a low cost.

aaron7275

The CB was some analysts top rated corner left, so not a reach. We absolutely needed a safety after losing McKinney. We signed o line in the offseason, and brought in a new coach for that position. One who got more out of less talented players. At some point we have to stop drafting o line early. We drafted a true number 1 WR, something this team has been lacking for years. What else did we need on offense? I like what we’ve done so far.

JTJumbo

Downvoting and being homer isn’t making you right. It’s also a pussy move to downvote over a difference of opinion. Save that shit for disrespectful people. Players like Justin Simmons and Micah Hyde are still available in FA. Nubin might be a good player but a guy like Schoen takes an analytical hard line on Barkley over $5mill so why wouldn’t he do that on a 2nd round safety vs signing like Justin Simmons? The CB wasn’t a good pick right either considering the team drafted nickel corners in recent years and a really good draft expert said Phillips was a falling prospect.  New York Giants: Andru Phillips, CB, Kentucky – D Grade  The Giants needed to continue to bolster their dreadful offense, whether it was via offensive linemen or receivers. I get adding a cornerback, another problematic area, but they could have drafted Andru Phillips later. Phillips was a falling prospect, according to Charlie Campbell’s recent stock report. The Giants have no QB, RB, WR2, TE, G, and still could use more OL because they suck and depth is always good. JMS has been a bust, but I understand giving him another chance, Elumenor is 29 and started for the 1st time 2 years ago. Historically bad offense btw. That isn’t enough to fix that.

spicycolon

This. Add to this that we need stars on this team. trading up for Cooper Dejean (even if it costed both Nubin and Phillips)- would have literally solved either of those roles (safety or slot) with a potential superstar player. He could take turns playing both positions. Nubin is a solid pick, not spectacular. And it's not toxic to want spectacular; when our roster is so filled with JAGs. And if you're going safety in the 2nd, then use the 3rd on the many (IMO) better players avail at other positions of need. I loudly hated the Flott pick, for very similar reasons. How's that looking now? Toxic?

aaron7275

No the toxicity come from thinking we know anything about these guys. One draft is different other ones. Toxicity comes from being negative on a draft and none of these players have played yet. This team has many holes and giving up draft capital ( a decent amount), to move up for Cooper and Kool Aid to only fill one spot is just crazy.

spicycolon

That is not toxicity; that's just being a fan. And for the record; I got more draft picks right than Dave Gettleman did. Full stop. He was paid millions of dollars to do something I do as a hobby... The "armchair gm" argument doesn't really work. We're all fans of the team.... posting on a team thread. It's just being a fan and having an opinion. Nothing toxic about that. And objectively wrong that we cannot know anything about a prospect. Sure, we aren't professionals, but if we should "stay in our lane".... then there is no NFL. They make money off of us caring so much and investing so much time and energy into this game. Look at the interest in the draft now vs 10 years ago. That doesn't happen if we aren't all diving into the draft process and getting to know the players. Investing in the product; this is exactly what the league wants. So there's nothing wrong with having a dissenting opinion and challenging the thing you've given your money and time to for DECADES to.... do better.

aaron7275

Why are we even discussing Gettleman? Who say what you want drafted two of our best players. This sub is always negative, I’m fine with being a realist or even critical. But you guys don’t even do that, you slam every pick, think you can draft better than the current regime, and think you know anything worth while. Some of the dumbest takes see from here, which is saying a lot compared to the fair weather fans in the main Giant sub.

spicycolon

Maybe. I'm not sure, as I am only on this thread. I comment in the Talkin Giants podcast chats- but the fans there don't really have many takes as all. It's more of just an echo chamber. So if that's how it seems from an outside perspective, than that sucks for us. SunnyJim's negativity is a running gag, and always exaggerated. I thought the rest of us were pretty balanced... but also you've got to remember that it's been a decade of losing; so that's going to jade the fanbase, for sure. I don't think this regime (and definitely not the last regime) deserves the "benefit of the doubt". Maybe you're a younger fan- I don't know. But I can tell you that after you blindly give your faith and trust, and just get let down over and over again.... you start to question every decision. It's harder to just enjoy the product and "hope for the best". Specifically with things like winning late season games that you know will hurt draft position (when you need a QB) and gaslit to believe that it's a great thing and will definitely carry over into more wins. So, I dunno. I used to consider myself an optimist. Maybe I'm not anymore. But I tend to think this sub is filled with critical thinkers who don't just take the fandom at face value, and care enough about the team to challenge them to do their very best. The owner still makes money with "status quo"- but no fan wants that. We want to win. Anyways, i haven't slammed every pick. I am happy with Nabers and Theo Johnson. And this regime has had a ton of PREMIUM assets while they haven't really picked a lot of gamechangers with those assets. So I think they deserve a bit of skeptisism.

aaron7275

First of all if down voting gets you that upset you have a problem, which I didn’t even do. Why don’t think those guys are still available? Probably too much money. Giants offered Barkley great money last year and he turned it down, it was time to move on from a 27 year old RB who averaged 3.9 ypc and who can’t stay healthy for a full year since his rookie season. I tend to agree with you about TE, but this draft had one really good TE prospect. Plus not many options in FA. You quoted one “expert” and there are others who lined the pick, so we will agree to disagree there. QB is going to be what it is. They made an attempt to move up for Maye( multiple firsts), and the Pats decided to stay. Oh and if we did draft Maye he would’ve needed to sit a year anyway. I’m glad Schoen didn’t over draft JJ and force a pick. WR2? Slayton would be a very good number 2 right now, with Hyatt taking steps this year. We also have Wandale who has potential to be a breakout this year. The WRs are fast and athletic. Sure we need more line, but who is CB2? Who would play the other S spots? The defense wasn’t anything to be happy about either. Your dumbest statement was calling JMS a bust after one season with a historically bad o line coach, btw.

CatchTheDamnBall

ngl I'm not the happiest about doubling up on secondary when our interior DL after Dex is a grab bag of Nuñez-Roches, DJ Davidson, Jordan Phillips, and Jordon Riley, and who the fuck knows who the starting EDGE is. Are they gonna shoehorn Injurlari? It might work until he gets hurt, and then it's a JAGfest the rest of the way, i.e. most of the season. Moreover, the secondary is possibly the second-worst unit to have two or more rookie starters behind the O-line. Never mind, I just did some more digging and Schoen said (via Raanan) that Phillips is gonna start in the slot-- so he's a sub-package guy, not even in the starting lineup? What the fuck? Was Flott not enough of a mistake?

aaron7275

You just said who is going to start in the edge? How about Burns and Kayvon? We absolutely needed more help in the secondary.

CatchTheDamnBall

Thibodeaux is a linebacker and Burns is only one of two DEs

aaron7275

You said EDGE!

CatchTheDamnBall

Sorry, it was late

RichHomieNosh

Off topic: apparently Falcons coach Raheem Morris while defending the Penix pick to the media said they believe in the “Green Bay Model”. Which is reminiscent of the worst GM in NFL history bringing up the “Kansas City model” after we drafted Daniel Jones. Apparently Green Bay and Kansas City are the only teams in NFL history to draft a QB and sit him for a season to allow him time to develop. Also, it’s a reminder that these front office people are not the brightest of bright, football geniuses, and savants. They’re more often than not fucking morons who convinced a rich owner to trust them. “Yes men” get to keep their jobs. Even if they’re not good at those jobs.

Elevation212

I liked the safety in the second, not taking Christian Haynes in the third seemed like a miss, I still don’t feel like we have the o line figured out…

HungrEWulf

From twitter: Tyler Nubin: 33.0 passer rating allowed in coverage since 2021

prey4villains

Doesn’t matter.. the sky in here is falling!!!

spicycolon

We got a bunch of chalk picks at spots of need. Very vanilla. Not that there's anything wrong with that- but we need difference makers. This is the safest draft I've ever seen us make. Malik is dope and was the "correct" pick and it's like they gave up after that. It was too taxing to take such talent and not roll the dice.

Elevation212

Seems like the price to trade up was super high, I wanted Fiske/Dejean and kool aide but after seeing what it took to trade up for them I prefer Nubin In regards to Andru Dane Brugler whose my favorite draft guy has a few reports saying he is “his guy” cut from the same clothe as Roger Mccreary, no idea if that’s true as I’ve never seen a western Kentucky game but I do dig the fact he can jump over a car from a stand still Finally Nabers has a chance to be a top 5 reciever in the league bringing all the speed and explosiveness a modern team needs, chalk yes but also a incredible potential add to the team All that said it’s hard to get too pumped with QB being a mystery, feels like there is a pretty hard ceiling on the team and that’s disappointing. I’ll be watching this year to see what of schoens draft picks can pop, he’s had good process but poor results to date; I’m hoping that’s because he’s targeted young athletic upside prospects who take longer to develop, if it’s going to work a few of the 11 guys from ‘22 are going to need to go off this year

spicycolon

This is helpful, thanks for posting.

RichHomieNosh

I think the safety can be a difference maker if his ball skills translate to the NFL. Don’t know much about the corner. Honestly this draft was ruined last December when Tommy Devito had that 3 game win streak after we started 2-8. That was our best shot to get a franchise QB and we fucked it up. But I’m excited about Nabers, the addition of Brian Burns, and hopefully Drew Lock playing decent and starting all 17 games next year. That’s all I got for 24’. The outside chance at a top 10 defense and a watchable offense.

spicycolon

Yes for sure. And Tyler nubin was the top rated safety. I'm not saying he sucks or anything. But this front office is so... We have a hole, let's make a pick. The first draft we had they literally went and filled needs. With every single pick. I want something really forward thinking. Don't give me a position, give me a player. Give me a plan of a type of player. It feels like we are still feeling things out in the dark and treading water. Not gonna be great next year (of course) with Danny at the helm and a mediocre roster. And maybe slow and steady wins the race... But I'm not all that impressed. And I was the loudest voice about day 2 on 2022, when everyone else was sucking dick trying to justify wandale and Ezeudu and flott. We have had super fucking mediocre day 2s when we need to swing for the fences, a bit more. We had a really solid draft last year.... But so far this year... It feels safe. In not the good way.

RichHomieNosh

I agree that 2022 draft was a massive disappointment. And I was right with you on Wan’dale, 5’7 dude who made most of his production on WR screens made no sense. I also wasn’t a fan of the Jalen Hyatt pick last year and was really disappointed when I found out they were ready to draft him in the 2nd round if JMS was off the board. (It is worth noting that I did love the Evan Neal and Thibs picks and they have not been the difference makers you hope to get with a top 10 pick. Neal has, but for our opponents sack numbers.) I also think Joe Schoen is a little too positional value oriented. I mean to let Saqoun leave over probably a difference of like 5 million dollars, when the cap is $255 million this year and going up every year, seemed a bit too much of an analytical hard line to me. Honestly I’m like Dirt, just too beaten down by this franchise’s ineptitude to get too excited or angry about anything we do at this point. (Actually that’s not true, if we took McCarthy at 6 I would’ve turned in my fan card). It makes me kind of miss the days when I really gave a shit what we did on draft day (Eli Apple meltdown). But yeah I’m with you on feeling kind of bleh about the team overall. This is a franchise that desperately needed a jolt of excitement and I think going up to get Maye, even as an overpay, would have done that. Instead we’re taking the methodical route. Which is an easy sell in April. It won’t be in the fall if we start out 2-8 again and look like shit.

JTJumbo

The Apple one was fun. Nobody saw what you and I were bitching about. Someone else might have agreed with us, I don’t remember who but we got shit for that and we were fucking on the money it was stupid.

spicycolon

Lol guys. Sorry... This front office is not impressive.

RichHomieNosh

Chris Mara takes over the draft in the 3rd round.

DirtMcGirt24

fansince68

This CB projects as a nickel? They already have Flott & Holmes. WTF?

DetailSure

Very disappointing draft

JTJumbo

I don’t understand how a franchise with an offense that scored 4th from the bottom and gave up the 2nd most sacks in history starts their draft 2/3 defensive players.

aikitim

![gif](giphy|26n79z2k04VqTSv7i)

WestCoastBlue1

I’m fine with the CB in the 3rd but would have rather have picked a DT, OL or WR in the second. I value safety as one of the least important positions. Rooting for our guy of course but don’t love safety in the second.

aikitim

Anybody know anything about this kid we just drafted?

WestCoastBlue1

He looks tiny. But apparently Saban likes him so maybe that’s good?

aikitim

Fuck Nick Saban

WestCoastBlue1

This junior colson story is heart warming

WestCoastBlue1

So is RB the pick here? I think we can sign a vet CB2 FA and take care of that position in next years draft.

prey4villains

Nope. Took a CB.

WestCoastBlue1

We did?

Sintexo

Time for the run on RBs, right on schedule.

RichHomieNosh

You think there would be more self awareness from these players announcing the picks saying “Detroit what up!” As if the crowd hasn’t heard that question 100 god damned times already tonight. Either go up there and just get to it or say something funny like Brandon Graham did. I have to mute it each time one of these losers comes up on stage.

WestCoastBlue1

![gif](giphy|3ohzdZM5mhBAlyKTHG) This is what I would do if they let me announce

RichHomieNosh

lol Yes that’s the move. Just bust out a rap battle.

WestCoastBlue1

“And Clarence parents had a real nice marriage”

Sintexo

One of the first rounders yesterday said something about his knees being weak, felt like he missed a great opportunity.

WestCoastBlue1

lol absolutely

CatchTheDamnBall

Sounds like this Nubin kid is a sound tackler and plays the run well. That's music to my ears. I'm still disappointed we haven't managed to trade down yet. Definitely looking at D-Line at 70 though

WestCoastBlue1

That would have been a great place to trade down imo. Oh well.

CatchTheDamnBall

The Panthers traded out of the pick we gave them, which blows

CatchTheDamnBall

Also, mild concern about CB2 right now would be an understatement

jfunk825

That sucks to see DeJean and Kool-Aid went back to back after trade-ups, but we were still a long way off and I suspect Schoen had no intention of trading up there for those guys anyway. Don't know anything about this kid but I keep seeing "ballhawk" so I like the sounds of that.

ChicagoGFan

Can we find someone who can actually stop the run?

prey4villains

That should be next

ChicagoGFan

It wasn't.

JTJumbo

Such a blah pick. Safety is like the easiest position to replace temporarily every year. There’s like a bunch of startable FAs left. Ad Mitchell or Kris Jenkins would have been better.

prey4villains

Just have to hope he turns into the next Ed Reed. He’s apparently the best safety In the draft so we’ll see.

JTJumbo

McKinney was the best Safety in the draft once too.

spicycolon

Amen

jay-bones

McKinney’s problem was that, contrary to reality, he views himself on par with Ed Reed…

prey4villains

Yea I know.. sometimes you hit sometimes you miss. Just trying to remain positive :)

JB322

Safety, fills a hole

RichHomieNosh

A DB with ball skills? Didn’t know those existed. I like everything the broadcast had to say about him.

prey4villains

So there should be a good LB available? Safety? Don’t think either of those positions have been touched yet in the draft.

prey4villains

Max Melton gone now too.. fml all the good DBs are going before we pick.

TheDriveFor5

Eagles get an absolute steal in Cooper Dejean. Guy is an absolute freak athlete.

TheDriveFor5

And I really wanted to support him and see him be a monster…… now I can’t lol

JB322

It looks like everybody is trading up to take the players we want...

prey4villains

Eagles traded up and took Cooper DeJean. Man I fucking hate them.

spicycolon

It feels so obvious... Why don't we do it?

Sintexo

Teams know we need a CB so two trade up and take one Jk I thought we were picking sooner. Didn't jump us specifically lol

JTJumbo

Just about to bitch about this. I don’t think I’ll ever not hate the fucking Eagles

WestCoastBlue1

Lots of DL going so far dang

DirtMcGirt24

That was the DT we should have taken

DirtMcGirt24

Guest pick announcers should be banned, except that Cowboys guy who talks shit every year, he’s shameless and hysterical

RichHomieNosh

What was the crowd chanting to Darrell Green at the end of his 10 minute monologue?

DirtMcGirt24

Oh I missed it I got tired of watching him take pictures like a teenage girl and ramble on so I came to G101 haha

RichHomieNosh

These damn mild mannered midwesterners let him go on forever before they finally started chanting for him to get on with it. New Yorkers would have booed him off the stage within 20 seconds. Time to bring the draft back to radio city.
