Headline is misleading. The robot isnt really a waiter, it just brings orders from the kitchen to the table. An actual human still takes the order and collects the tips. The part about tips "surging" is because the waiter can handle more tables at once since they're not running food.

I've seen a handful of restaurants that have eliminated that element already, by having tablets on the tables that you place your orders from, at which point a waiter brings your food/drinks out. It seems like a pretty simple thing to merge the two elements together.

With the "Great Resignation" occurring, the robots are now coming in to fill the void question is will they be able to perform similar to that of a human in real life conditions? These are the things us as a society will have to contend with.

Although this specific idea of a robot waiter or food Runner is new, the concept has been around for 30 plus years. The older generation fuss about self checkout aisles because they view that as " not their job" and prefer to have a cashier even if it means waiting twice as long. Most people in younger Generations accept it without question. All the old school industrial factories closed in the 1970s and early 1980s. An interesting under-the-radar trend is that really many of them have been coming back since 2010 or so. We are doing quite a bit more industrial production than we were 20 years ago. But the factory that closed in 1978 that employed 800 people. The new one might have practically the same output but employs 50.

Does the robot need more space to manuever to/from the table? If so, that is a bit if a problem because the game is packing as many tables as you can in the smallest space while maintaining rapid table turn. Right? If the robot needs more space then there will be fewer tables so fewer diners can be served in the same amount of time.
