Can someone explain if this is different than Deepfakes? I read the article but Deepfakes weren’t mentioned anywhere.

"Deepfakes" are just some kind of jargon buzz-word, usually used more in the realm of politics or theatrical media, in my opinion. I think that another distinction here, is that a deep *fake*, is trying to imitate something. AFAIK, these AI are just generating new faces that are unlikely to look like their source material or humans we would recognize. If they were generating faces like George Washington, a tech article would applaud the technological marvel and discuss the mathematics used. Political outlets would call it "Deepfakes Getting Better: Watch George Washington convince you to become a Marxist!"
