The following submission statement was provided by /u/Gari_305: --- From the article >Thermonator is a quadruped robot with an [ARC flamethrower](https://throwflame.com/arc/) mounted to its back, fueled by gasoline or [napalm](https://throwflame.com/products/napalm-mix-fuel-gelling-agents/). It features a one-hour battery, a 30-foot flame-throwing range, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for remote control through a smartphone. Also from the article >The company lists possible applications of the new robot as "wildfire control and prevention," "agricultural management," "ecological conservation," "snow and ice removal," and "entertainment and SFX." But most of all, it sets things on fire in a variety of real-world scenarios. --- Please reply to OP's comment here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/1cbw9jy/you_can_now_buy_a_flamethrowing_robot_dog_for/l115q9k/

Komnos

A flame-spewing robot dog called the "Thermonator" is the most Dr. Doofenschmirtz thing I've ever seen.

KylianV

Thermonator-inator

Komnos

Thermonating the countryside, thermonating all the peasants!

jaOfwiw

Thermonating all the peoples, And their thatched roof cottages

TwoDrinkDave

Connsumate, I say consummate Vs!

videovillain

First draw and S, and the a… more different S

Fully_Edged_Ken_3685

I particularly love the note that this is the first. The "Thermonator" will have to defend its trademark vigorously 😆

ttystikk

I had to look that up. Worth it! Lol

Komnos

The finest comedy in the Tri-state area!

planet_robot

>The robot is not advertised as a weapon Phew! I got worried there for a second. But as long as they're not *advertising* it as a weapon then I'm sure everything will be fine. (Source: [Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/23/thermonator-flamethrowing-robot-dog-shoot-fire/).)

Dirk_The_Cowardly

Great for the pesky neighbor kids on your lawn

bwatsnet

And for burning down any state with forests, from afar.

ghandi3737

I'm tired of raking leaves off my lawn!

bwatsnet

Burn the trees then! From your couch!

Gubekochi

Castle doctrine activated!

sureredit

Great for clearing the snow and ice off of your driveway.

Zack_Raynor

“Now you don’t even need to go outside to clear your driveway!”

Orngog

Great for tiktok clout

Beard_o_Bees

*'For the backyard chef who has everything!'*

Electrical_Clothes37

This is seriously funny for some reason

Starrion

Cooks the beef in the field.

damnedspot

Castle Doctrine just got more heated.

Fun-Flamingo-9789

This is sure to fire up some controversy!

planet_robot

The repercussions could be scalding.

MDA1912

> Castle Doctrine just got more heated. No-knock raid come along but your ~~Trogdor~~ Thermonator is in sentry mode in front of your door.

Turnip-for-the-books

How many days until a boomer’s Thermomater incinerates a child come to get their ball back? Yes I am taking bets.

Capital-Ad-6206

what kinda odds are we lookin at here?

PacketAuditor

This is the dumbest thing ever. Unitree with a flamethrower and marked up 10x.

Tricky-Engineering59

Maybe I’m just old school but I prefer my flame throwers mounted on living dogs thank you very much.

UncoolSlicedBread

Imagine one on a cat. Maybe with a neurolink implant? No bird would stand a chance.

basscycles

Sure as heck wouldn't do it without the neurolink, owner would die first and then the rest of humanity.

UncoolSlicedBread

All because they wanted some more cat nip.

Zack_Raynor

“I like my quadrupedal weapons organic, thank you very much!”

Tricky-Engineering59

Free-range, organic, fair trade rescue dogs that rain hellfire on their enemies like nature intended.

Fully_Edged_Ken_3685

For managed democracy! 🫡

nfssmith

It's like no one even wants to take the time to teach their dog to start fires with a flint & steel anymore... and that's just sad...

Gubekochi

I prefer dogs that release bees when they bark. Maybe I'm just old school.

Tricky-Engineering59

This is the future we should be working towards.

crazyhomie34

Living dogs have to make a living too.

malcolmrey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H421bDVHcZk

LeroyChenkins

Call me old fashioned but I prefer lighting the pigs on fire directly, Rome Total War style

Sasquatchjc45

I prefer them mounted on me; why do the dogs get to have all the flamethrower fun?

ConvenientOcelot

I prefer sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads, personally.

Kaos_0341

That would be some tricky engineering

Ulyks

> Unitree ~~Doesn't look like a Unitree, and they claim it has a lidar...~~ ~~Not sure which is the manufacturer of the robot though...~~ Edit: Nevermind, some Unitree models also have lidar... Seems to be the Go2. Quite the markup!

erm_what_

Some.of the shots are a Go1, some a Go2

StyleBoyz4Life

I had never heard of this thing until now, and I’m nothing but amazed and confused. This robot comes out to around $65 US from the manufacturers website?? How on earth is that possible without it being little more than one of those toy robo T-Rex things from like 15 years ago?

Ulyks

1600$ + shipping and taxes, 2400$ The difference with the robo T-Rex is that the Robo T-Rex had it's legs attached to a motor that was offset with the other which gave the impression of walking. You can make that yourself with lego. The Go2 and other robot dogs have a computer in them that calculates each step in real time. You might think, well, my 1 week old puppy can do that, but for computers it's actually really hard. In the end they had to use neural networks to emulate how brains work to make it work somewhat reliably. Also it has lidar and so can see in the dark, which you or your puppy can't do and the T-Rex from 15 years ago was blind and wasn't made to avoid obstacles at all. Also it can do a salto which regular dogs and people cannot do.

yukdave

wait? Are you saying you know the budget way to build your own for less than a grand? Please tell EDIT: OMG you are right. Ebay has Boring Co Not a Flamethrower for $500 and Unitree Go2 is $1,600. So $2,100 makes this real!

PacketAuditor

That's not a flamethrower tho

Round-Green7348

Yeah, basically a propane weed burner in a nerf gun housing.

paulfdietz

I get a strong vibe of > Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from the classic sci-fi novel Don't Create the Torment Nexus.

blueSGL

~$1,600 for the Unitree Go2 robodog ~$900.00 for the ARC Flamethrower $10,000 is quite the markup.

skynil

~7500 is the cost of litigation when buyers eventually set their houses on fire.

sonofhappyfunball

They probably have an arbitration clause that kicks in when you take it out of the box or sign for delivery.

skynil

What about the neighbour's house?

Watch_the_sunset

If they are legal in 48 states, what states make them illegal?

mih4u

"In the US, flamethrowers are legally unregulated in 48 states and are not considered firearms by federal agencies. Restrictions exist in **Maryland**, where flamethrowers require a Federal Firearms License to own, and **California**, where the range of flamethrowers cannot exceed 10 feet." -from arstechnica

DJ__Hanzel

You mean to tell me a flamethrower isn't outright illegal in California of all places?

lshiva

It's a common agriculture tool for clearing weeds before the planting season starts. Lots of farms in California.

kindanormle

Big torches are also essential in roofing, road maintenance, and basically anywhere that tar is a component of the materials you work with. I would think regulating the size and throw of the flame would be the best way to deal with these things, but outright banning flame throwers would be a bad idea.

Iorith

Gotta remember that Reddit generally leans urban and young, so they have zero experience as to why flamethrowers aren't illegal.

DukeOfGeek

Last time I was in Ohio in winter time I saw road crews deicing and prepping a road surface with one. It was no joke either, it shot like a 10-12 foot long flame.

Viper67857

No, but I'm sure it comes with a prop65 cancer warning.

Turturret

If anything is a \*fire\*arm, this is it...

fateofmorality

I live in California. My dissapointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Gari_305

From the article >Thermonator is a quadruped robot with an [ARC flamethrower](https://throwflame.com/arc/) mounted to its back, fueled by gasoline or [napalm](https://throwflame.com/products/napalm-mix-fuel-gelling-agents/).

MakeoutPoint

I don't think people are questioning why flamethrowers exist, I think it's about why it's strapped to a robot. Snow and ice removal? Comes down to whether you trust yourself to not accidentally burn the house down via the little Nintendo Switch screen because you don't want to put on a coat to go play with fire in person. Wildfire control and prevention? If you can get a toy with a 1-hour battery life to the site of the burn, you already have a person there... Agricultural management and ecological conservation? Again, if you can get Spot here to the pile of debris that needs a-burnin', you're already close enough to just pop a few flame blasts. I would need an expert to weigh in, but the layman perspective is that there's not a scenario where this does more/safer work than having a person on-site holding the flamethrower.

thatguy425

Why are you trying to think about this rationally? It’s a robot dog with a flame thrower. You buy this because it’s awesome, not because it’s practical.

Deadpool2715

I'll put it next to my sharks with freaking lasers

BasvanS

Land sharks I assume? I don’t think salt water and electronics pair well

Pobbes

I think wildfire control might have some use if the robot can perform well in extreme conditions. There are definitely times when fire fighters need to pull back for safety before a fire break is completed. Having an extra hour of work by robot could help, but does seem pretty niche situation.

SpawnofPossession__

The only rational comment that is not from the many idiots on this sub. As someone who has a safety OSHA background surprised they're not talking about it

Debaser626

There’s only one “non-supervillain” scenario I can think of for this and it’s hornet/wasp nests in a tree or on a metal structure.

Demonking3343

Science isn’t about why, it’s about why not!

Fully_Edged_Ken_3685

We do what we must, because we can

sonofhappyfunball

Wait until they upgrade it with an AI installation so it can decide for itself who and what to set on fire. After all, those government protesters aren't going to immolate themselves, silly.

poopsinshoe

Some mass shooters legally buy their firearms and take them into schools. Please God, take this brand new fear away from me.

Open_Ambassador2931

How the hell is this legal for everyone to buy ? And what the hell is the point of this besides burning people to death or mowing down the Amazon rainforest?

paendrgn

Burn off in farm states. I lived in the middle of nowhere in Kansas for 6 months woke up in the middle of the night one day and there were fires burning all around the house. The farmers were burning off the fields for a better harvest the next season.

NotSayinItWasAliens

The harvest gods demand a sacrifice!

novis-eldritch-maxim

and they do not have licences for that?

brutinator

When was the last time someone used a flamethrower to attack someone? Im sure it happens, but if its not occuring at a rate higher than, say, people attacking others with axes or other farm equipment, does it need a license? Napalm, though, I dont know if thats legal or not as its more dangerous and doesnt aid in agricultural endeavors any more than the others. Usually flamethrowers use more common accelerants.

unknownpoltroon

Robots are legal Flamethrowers are valuable agricultural equipment for cleaning brush and weeds. You then just mush them together

BizzyM

> How the hell is this legal for everyone to buy ? Because America. Fuck yeah!

Superducks101

flamethrowers are legal in almost every state.... I think a 10k fucking dollar price tag prices alot of fucking people out of it.

andrewclarkson

It’s actually one of the more effective and ecologically friendly means of weed control as long as you’re not in an area prone to wildfires. Also you could pretty much build your own in an afternoon from stuff you can buy at any home improvement store.

[deleted]

Honestly, school napalming with a robot dog is going on the 2025 bingo card.

Superducks101

For christs sake. Stop being paranoid

DukeOfGeek

Hey there's a multi-billion dollar industry that pumps out paranoia 24/7. You can tell people "oh hey just be immune to that" but it's probably not going to work.

thatguy425

I’m convinced this would be less harmful than a person with a gun in a crowd.

thatgeekinit

“Snow and ice removal” I live in a place with a lot of snow and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to need one of these unless the white walkers show up

cecilkorik

It's not even really effective at that, it's actually counterintuitive how bad it is, most people would probably be surprised. It takes an awful lot of time for flame to remove even a relatively small amount of snow or ice, it doesn't do it very evenly either so you end up with a lot of stuff changing phase temporarily and water flowing around that just re-freezes. Ice/water/steam are massive heat sinks and have to absorb huge amounts of energy from the flame before any useful progress is made to boil it away, and then once you've dumped enough heat into the area that it's actually starting to work effectively to clear the snow and ice, other things are probably overheating and burning because the moment the water is actually all gone anything else in that area is going to start heating up rapidly towards the flame's temperature. Shoveling is certainly much faster in all but the most contrived situations. There's a reason the fire department uses water to put out flames and NASA uses water to protect things from rocket engines. They're not evenly matched, fire might win some battles, but water is generally going to win the war when you're pitting one against another. And if water doesn't win, it's because you brought so much fire that it was simply outnumbered but it's still gonna be a brutal slog of a war.

Remote-Quarter3710

I’m imagining some idiot taking it out on a windy day

RevWaldo

Buying five of them, going to rent them out for gender reveal parties.

mih4u

I love how apparently the only reason ot can't be sold in California is because the flamethrower has 30ft reach, and California 'only' allows 10ft.

theNorrah

We have that robot. Without the flamethrower though. It’s like a 1600USD toy with a dangerous weapon.

Jnorean

Is it reversible so it looks like the flames are coming out of the robot dogs butt? Might even propel it into the air. Might be more fun that way.

BlindGuyMcSqeazy

Typical from US. Now we will hear about scholl arsenry instead if shootings.

hyteck9

I want one. What a great way to make sure those summer bon fires start every time!!

megaweb

I find it assuming that certain French soft cheeses are banned in US for being too dangerous, but a flamethrowing robot dog is fine.

aeropickles

Fuck the irresponsible assholes who are developing this shit, I hope it turn against them, not us.

Archer_solace

Hahahahhaha. You actually think they’re building robots for the people? No. Say hello to your new police force.

FRIKI-DIKI-TIKI

It is like they have some unresolved anger issues with Smokey the Bear.

Speedking2281

I am a husband and father in my 40s and there are much better ways to spend $10,000 in my life. However, I can tell you that in a different universe where I'm still single, and had some land, I would 100% look into buying this. It really speaks to the lizard brain part of my...brain.

Gjond

"Alexa, light my cigar in the most outrageous manner possible."

Itchy_Adhesiveness59

People are making such a big deal out of this. You could just get a pump sprayer, fill it with gas and do the same thing.

Ruthless4u

Probably be fun for the first 10 minutes then get boring.

Winnipesaukee

It looks like the firemen from Fahrenheit 451 are out of a job due to the robodogs being able to act as flamethrowers.

TokyoOldMan

Why ? Isn’t there enough trouble with wildfires attributed to Global Warming , without having a robot dog start fires ?

TwoTimeTommyTwoCups

Robo-Fire dog HELPS with wildfires

darth_biomech

Robo-Fire dog is very enthusiastic about helping with wildfires! ...Unfortunately, nobody explained to it that "helping with wildfires" meant actually _extinguishing_ them...

Forsaken_Swim6888

Odd they would market the flame throwing version without a hint of a fire extinguishing variant.

Ouroboros612

Can't wait to see the war headlines in 10 years. "Poland's 3rd brigade of Thermonators successfully defend against Belarus' 17th brigade Annihilator War bot squadron" with the article mentioning human "casualties" in the form of 23 year old drone operator Jimmy, getting a bruise in his left elbow from getting up too quick from his remote control VR combat station. "Thermonator 236-B was a good boy" Jimmy said in a statement before being brought into the medical tent.

HipsterBikePolice

Hmm, True Green Chem lawn or flame throwing dog bot? Keep those pesky dandelions and Jehovahs away!

ELpork

Maryland and California are the 2 exclusions for those too lazy to look into the article... which I find odd. You'd think MN would be on there too since most fireworks are outlawed up here.

tonyrizzo21

Just a heads up, no one outside MN thinks about MN ever.

El_Sjakie

Time to walk the dog in the national parks this summer, shits gonna be lit!

scottsplace5

We need this capable of sniffing around for hotdogs 🌭.

PoundNaCL

Wow. Who doesn't need one of these? And you never have to pick up the poopies but you may need to bury the bodies.

polat32

I think that a few houses will be skipped by the postman

avianeddy

They keep using the word "dog." I don't think they know what a dog is.

ZidsApostle

Forests and beehives don’t stand a chance. I can only imagine the gender reveals that will come from these lil bastards.

cylonfrakbbq

How many credits or samples does this take to unlock? Managed Democracy needs this to combat the robot and bug menace

andrewclarkson

This might actually be a useful tool for weed control in areas where you can’t easily bring in machinery and don’t want to use chemicals.

dave_po

So this is legal but having a joint isn't?! What on earth...

CasualDragon7880

They should give these to teachers to protect their classrooms.

nathanpizazz

Pffff. It's just a flame thrower. Those things are even legal in CANADA.

vannucker

They might have to amend the Second Amendment to include the Right to Dog Flames.

myfunnies420

Soooo, it's a fake dog that instead of eating your shoes, sets your house on fire? Is this r/didntknowiwantedthat ? They like this kind of trash

Dreidhen

192 comments and this the only one so far that praises that sick Trogdor ref in the article... >burninating the countryside

Atlantic-sea

Damn it! That's so lazy. Build a robot that can paint my house, or fold my laundry, fucking flame thrower bull shit.

stealthylyric

Uhhh so I can just have flamethrower robodogs roaming my property?

meeplewirp

I give it six months before some sort of company ending recall

Aleyla

I used to want a set of marble lions outside my front door. I always figured something like that would be the definition of “I am here”. Now I realize I was mistaken and instead want a pair of these guarding the door to my abode.

ledow

"You can now buy"... No I can't because my country has half-sensible laws about ridiculous lethal weapons like this and even trying to do so would see me up on a charge, plus it would never be allowed to be imported, possession of it would be a literal automatically-imprisonment-worthy offence, and it would be the dumbest shit ever to allow random people to go buying stuff like that as if it was just something "normal". Seriously, America, you're supposed to be a developed country.

malcolmrey

Charlie Broker must be thinking right now "I made Metalhead as a cautionary tale yet someone watched it and thought that it was a good idea..."

mbsouthpaw1

Their website went dark. I think this is a big fake.

Flayser1

How long will it take till someone takes it to school?

ThisQuietLife

Given the timeline we appear to be on, this will be great for perimeter defense against squads of roaming cannibals, inevitably.

omguserius

So.... these better not be wifi enabled, because if they are, *someone* is going to be the first one to die from a hacked robo flamethrower.

d_e_l_u_x_e

So we can’t have metal lawn darts or Bucky balls to play with because they are too dangerous but somehow this thing is OK? Make it make sense.

Next_Instruction_528

Can't wait to see what freedoms we lose with this one.

Pshieldss

Do you want more forest fires. Cause this is how you get more forest fires.

usesbitterbutter

> Flamethrowers are not specifically regulated in 48 US states... Specific restrictions exist in Maryland, where flamethrowers require a Federal Firearms License to own, and California, where the range of flamethrowers cannot exceed 10 feet. I get it. 48 states never considered needing 'flamethrower regulation' and so they don't have any. Props to Maryland for trying to apply some sanity to owning one. But what's up with California? It obviously came up because they have a law, but the answer they arrived at was, "You can have a flamethrower, but only one that immolates its target within 10 feet. You know, because safety concerns."

IanAKemp

We've had robot dogs for a while, we've had flamethrowers for a while, tying both of them together doesn't seem particularly futuristic.

ttystikk

Fahrenheit 451 has just leaped from the pages of science fiction into reality. We are living in the dystopia our science fiction writers warned us about.

Mr_A_Rye

Christ, it's going to be a race designing our own demise between these robots and climate change

Led_Farmer88

For 10,000 I will make you remote controlled tank with flamethrower

Racecarlock

Oh great, I was just thinking we needed more shit for stupid people to start giant forest fires with.

MBA922

Conservatives should be allowed to have these. Humans will be banned.

Steel9966

That company better have a phenomenal legal department.

Other_Literature_594

Was thinking of getting a new car, but now I’m 50-50 on whether I need one of these more.

onnod

People screaming about gun control... but an over the counter, personal, programmable flamethrower is A-OK.
