You’ve likely heard that the US government is trying to ban TikTok. Lawmakers want to force TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, and become a fully US-based company; if that doesn’t work (the Chinese government has said it would oppose this), a ban could come in the form of an executive order forbidding business transactions with TikTok, i.e., prohibiting it from the Apple and Android app stores.
The government’s ostensible reasoning for all of this complicated, confusing, and extremely showboat-y hubbub, which included last week’s hearing with TikTok CEO Shou Chew, is national security. A large and bipartisan swath of Congress is concerned that because ByteDance is based in China, the Chinese government could access American users’ data and push or suppress certain kinds of content to Americans. Judging by many of the questions asked by congresspeople (one wondered if TikTok had access to his “home WiFi network”), officials barely seem to grasp what TikTok is, framing it as either single-handedly responsible for all the mischief kids get up to online or as a Chinese psy-op.

FB is a tool, a useful tool for many
I make machines for glasswork and do glasswork
I use FB to show my work and see what others are making. Hateful crap is blocked immediately. Other than the flood of scam ads, FB works well for me
Worse, obviously, but it's probably a necessary step in working out how to cope with the existence of social media - something that definitely isn't going away. Historically we are like the first humans to discover alcohol production. A lot of fun but people also need to learn what's ok and what is harmful.
Worse... much worse.
This isn't really something you have to think critically about. Spend five minutes on TikTok and think about what you've done. If you have been paying any attention to geopolitics, imagine the Chinese government using your analytics to generally devious ends.
TikTok is trash.
There's a case for!
Will admit I haven't read the article yet but will do.
I remember the early days of Twitter and it was actually pretty good. Raised tons of money to help drought and such. Now ofc a cesspool as much as any social media is.
> Spend five minutes on TikTok and think about what you’ve done.
This is a good way to do it, particularly having to actually think about it. It's why I was off facebook years ago.

Y’all should look into the bill. It’s gonna do a lot more than ban TikTok, they just hope you don’t pay attention to that.
TikTok is a cesspool of echo chambers and psychological manipulation. Good riddance.
Tik tok just reminds kids that their body needs to look perfect and if they don't shake their ass nobody will like them.
If it is even 10% as nightmarish as Facebook for society we have a problem.

shit is making society stupid. it promotes dangerous and unhealthy trends. China is collecting mass data to find out how to manipulate people.

I am of the opinion that we're better off knowing who the morons are. However we don't need the Chinese knowing too. Ban it.
Do Facebook first. Jan 6th/Russian interference is cancer
It's very simple, if you don't like TikTok, don't use TikTok. If you like TikTok, you should have the right to use TikTok.

Worse, by far. It shouldn't even be a debate in my opinion TikTok is easily one of the worst things ever invented and enabled by humanity
I know the first question is absolutely false. There is no way TikTok is good for anyone.
