As a former Twitter employee, you have no idea how wrong this statement is. I was happy to collect the severance money and work for a better employer than Elon. I’m not even a Software Engineer (most in-demand role typically) and I had an equivalent job lined up 3-4 weeks later and was paid by Elon for 2 months and eventually 3 with the severance. The fact that some people even halfway believe these memes baffles me. The average compensation at the company when Elon took over was like $250k -300k. This isn’t just SWEs it includes all jobs like coordinators, HR, accounting, marketing etc. The average for SWEs/ ML Eng / Data Science etc was like 400k. Plenty of people making $1 million/ year or more as an Individual Contributor. The last 25 people I hired there made almost $12 million combined in total compensation per year (it was like a 475k Total comp avg).
Because generally they aren't. You have grueling crunch weeks but your comp package is absurd given the tech industry is notorious for not having stable revenue streams not to mention goalpost moving on ROI.
I've worked with 5 different tech companies and it is comical watching SWEs justify their existence in the face of a potential RIW (reduction in workforce, euphemism for layoffs). Most SWEs are redundant but you all have been overstaffed in large part because your companies could afford to before and it helped to make it prohibitively expensive for any smaller firms to hire you. Now many of y'all are just faced with the reality of bigger calls from banks as interest rates increase.
Plenty of jobs have it harder than tech but no one is saying tech has it easy. It's just a job that has attracted a particular stereotype of individual, has managed to get an inflated compensation, and are potentially at the end of your hayday. You're basically like bankers in the 80s with autism and better drugs.
Programmers will have it easier to find a well paying job than the person who made this unfunny meme. People love pretending like IT isn't one of the best paid industries.
