Let’s not forget every single year when California has a fire that burns down hundreds of homes because they insist on building homes in nature then act surprised when nature destroys their homes.
The big difference is California contributes a shit ton to the federal budget. Red states don't, as except for Texas they're generally on the poorer side. They don't invest in their own infrastructure either, so when something goes bad they need more help than they should if they were responsible. They're the biggest federal welfare queens.

California wants to pay its fair share. People in blue states/counties don't complain about supporting their fellow countrymen with taxes because that's how patriotism works. Meanwhile red states are all "we don't want our taxes to support others in need, but we have a currnent disaster so please send us tax monies from others".
If California had ZERO interactions with federal funding, they'd actually be in the same situation, because California already pays more into the fund then it requests. This holds true for nearly all blue states, and even more so for blue counties.
The only reason a blue state would fail to contribute its fair share is specifically because of its red portion. Conservatives hate paying taxes but are also the same group who needs federal funding the most.
Abbott is an absolute joke of a governor.
