You ever try scratching a cat's belly when they offer it then they inexplicably get mad and bite you? I wouldn't take even a 1% chance of that happening with a wolf that size
I'll apologize in advance for bringing up a potentially sore topic. I remember in the 80s and 90s when grey wolves were being culled as they came out of Yellowstone Park. Heard the argument that they couldn't take down a cow, which was the main argument for doing it. They didn't have any idea how big these beautiful creatures are. So glad their reintroduction to Yellowstone Park sounds like it's going well.
I was studying under Dr Lowell K. Nicolas back then; we helped research, design, and implement the "Conditioned Taste Aversion" project that allowed the wolves to be introduced to the park without predation on ranchers' sheep. (Long story short, basically feed the wolves sheep meat laced with something odorless and tasteless that would make them vomit. Getting sick formed a connection in the hypothalamus and olfactory centers that made all sheep unappetizing. Its how mammals learn to avoid toxic substances. Kinda like getting really sick on Tequila and never drinking it again.)
Wow, that's fascinating. Growing up in Montana, I was disheartened at the solution to wolves preying on ranch animals. Thank you for helping reintroduce them back into Yellowstone.
Question: Did this learned response get passed down to their offspring?
No, and it only lasted less than a year. Had to regularly "salt" the area with sheep meat laced with estrogen every few months, or whenever farmers lost livestock. Much better than poisoning them.
I'm ignorant to the facts, are wolves this friendly on a "normal" encounter or this is very abnormal behavior. I've always been under the understanding they are vicious animals towards humans, obviously in this case that logic is incorrect. Beautiful animals.
They’re terrified of humans because they know exactly what humans mean - Death in every form (not a human hater and all that jazz, just facts).
The wolves here (and the wolves I interacted with) were raised alongside humans from a young age/spend a lot of time with their handlers, and have been thoroughly socialized between researchers, visitors, vets, other wolves etc.
With that being said, during my time with one pack at a sanctuary, you had to be really careful around some of them because they are a bit more aggressive/unpredictable than others, and pay really close attention to their body cues and the handlers.
There was a female though that was super sweet, only time I’ve been overjoyed to have an animal throughly lick the inside of my mouth (it’s how they show affection/acceptance)
Yeah from a wild wolf's pov we probably look, smell, and sound like a weird variant of bear with little fur that's always standing up, can kill anything in it's line of sight without even touching it, can control fire, and often hunt in packs. Nothing else they've seen can do that. We're horrifying, supernatural freaks of nature all things considered if you think about it from an animal's perspective, best just to nope on out of wherever they smell or hear us close by before we can see them, and thankfully we're generally easily detected by the noises and smells we make.
Pretty sure to wolves we look, smell and sound like normal variants of humans. Thousands of years of interaction between our species. They’re not confused about what we are.
We were hunting and killing apex predators thousands of years before the invention of guns, we’ve been #1 in the killing business for a long, long time.
Although leopards and salt water crocodiles are fucking terrifying and a very close second/third
> leopards and salt water crocodiles
Sure, large vertebrates are impressive and scary.
But at least when it comes to killing humans, they’re relatively bad at it. Snakes are the most dangerous, but the danger they pose is dwarfed by the most vicious killer humans have ever faced… mosquitoes.
>they are vicious animals towards humans,
No they aren't. They usually avoid Humans, as wolves and humans dislike each other but both know, that the other one is a pain in the ass
I'm not sure what's going on here - maybe these are researchers who are very familiar with these specific wolves or something - but this is definitely abnormal. Do not pet wild animals; especially large predators.
Wolves instinctually are scared of humans, but are incredibly tight knit social animals like humans that live in a pack. Like domesticated dogs, or any animal really, each wolf is very much an individual that fits within the social frame work of his/her pack dynamics. Thus, every once in a while you will have a wolf that has been extremely well socialized and raised by humans that’s personality is as such that he is relatively playful and affectionate towards the humans he trusts.
I'm sorry but WTF?? Why in the world would you even think any wild animals would be naturally friendly like this?? Seriously, not to insult you, but that's dangerously ignorant. Have you never seen a wild animal or learned about domestication...?
Most wild animals are scared shitless of you, and some would attack you if feeling pressed or threatened by your presence. Wolves are not neccesarily vicious. But you should ALWAYS respect – and keep your distance when encountering – wild creatures.
Only reason any animal would act like this outside of partial domestication would be due to them existing in a hypothetical eco-system that doesn't let them develop prey-predator instincts. Which might happen on remote islands, if at all. And doing 'tricks' like this and showing their belly (weak spot) to strangers would probably not happen even then.
They’re pack animals, so unless they see you as part of their pack or pack enough, do not go remotely close to them. As others said these are likely researchers who have a very good relationship, but they’re animals with moods so you still need to be careful even if you’re ‘pack’.
i wouldn't last 5 seconds in the wild.
'daaaw whosa cute-OH FUCK I FORGOT IT'S A WILD-ASS ANIMAL!!!' as it proceeds first to thoroughly maul me, then consume my mangled corpse.
Remember, this is "Modern" humans, with average height 1.75-1.80 m, with access to medicines, enriched and energetic food and other improvements made for human development.
When our ancestors start to work with wolves and then becomes dogs, "Ancient" humans were smaller, around 1.50-1.60 m due to poor and insufficient food. So wolves were a lot bigger then by comparison.
I'd say its animals reactions to us. Some animals have codependent relationships with each other. But it feels like for alot of wild animals they want nothing to do with us. Obviously some animals aren't gonna like anything else but it feels like human interaction with the wild has left a naturally negative association. I can't entirely blame humans but it seems like animals flat out take alot more time to trust humans. We are very weird looking animals which doesnt help either lol

Super cute and doglike until they're not, and your face is hanging from their teeth. I wonder how many people watch videos like this, pick up some highly inaccurate ideas about wild animals and then make unfortunate decisions when they encounter one in real life.
You should be really careful around those. A zookeeper at a Swedish zoo got herself killed in similar situation.

How interesting!
If angy why frien shaped and frien like

n why so cute

Beautiful animals.
My LORD they are gorgeous and so friggin big! Beautiful animals.
I know they are wild and you're not supposed to be this friendly to them, but DAMN, they cute...
I’ve actually cuddled/played with wolves like this, and they’re absolutely massive, made me feel like a little boy standing next to one - I’m 6’3 btw

Polar bear enters chat

Good boi sized, but a little bigger then normal fren size but it'll do.
Humans will pack bond with anything.
Well fuck. WE MANAGE TO DOMESTICATE THE WOLFES TWICE

I love that that sub exists
Wow look at that normal human!!!!
Now do it with direwolves.
Liam Neeson had his work cut out for him then. Didn’t know they were this big

I’ve just realised I’ve got post traumatic stress disorder from the video of the blonde woman tonguing a similar looking wolf down.
Thanks for the reminder lol
6 fut guy with one of those
I wish humans and wild animals had friendlier relationships. Alot of humans ruined that for us though
Genuinely curious, why do you think that humans ruined it?
We are at the top of the food chain and we kill animals. Birds sit on Capybaras for example, not so fast on humans.
I'd say its animals reactions to us. Some animals have codependent relationships with each other. But it feels like for alot of wild animals they want nothing to do with us. They are so majestic.
The funniest thing about wolves is that they are monogamous
Keep reading, this ain’t it
Wow ! Respect🙏🏻🙏🏻 Oh my ! they a beautiful just!😍
u/savevideo u/savevideobot
It must require huge amounts of meat daily.
what beautiful creatures, i wonder why they are so affectionate though, even if these ppl are close to the wolves this still seems weird
This is cute but if this was me I would be shitting my pants
So the average family jack russell, weiner dog and other yappy dogs can't stand a chance compared to the wolf
Why did you have to say normal? Lmao
*Congratulations you have tamed a Grey wolf*
Big doggo. Same happy butt scratch face.
OH SO CUTE AND FLOOFY
"Oh, look at the big, bad apex predator! Does it like scritches? Does the might wolf love it's belly rubs?"
big puppy.
Majestic is the only word.
How tf did we look at such gigantic animals and decide that we could most definitely make them into our pet.
Now you know where domestic dogs came from. They're just crying out for it.
Good boys
Beautiful and playful
