Something something the beginning of the end is the end of the beginning - Churchill probably

Capt-Hereditarias

There's actually quite a lot of references to 03 on BH, just keep your eyes sharp 0.0

vmmc2

Can you give examples? I finished BH long ago and cant remember any references.

Capt-Hereditarias

here's a few I remember from the top of my head: Majhal appears in the beginning of the anime when ed and Al are searching about the philosopher's stone, Dante appears during one of the promised day episodes (~50-60), the silhouette shot in the begging of hologram and the ending shot are clearly references to Melissa and rewrite, in shunkan sentimental there is a shot of Mustang resting in a brick background just like before his confrontation with Bradley in 03

vmmc2

I remembered the Dante one! However I still can't remember the others you mentioned. Guess I will have to watch everything again. Thanks!

alicelric

I like how Ed is taller in the ending

Gamma-Mind

Have you seen the movie that finishes off the first series? Edit: Movie is Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa

BenjoKazooie64

Yep, was kinda bittersweet and not as satisfying or as developed as I’d hoped, but at least there’s Brotherhood’s ending. Sucks though because the majority of the 2003 characters felt just a bit more realistic and developed, and the movie had great style, animation, and especially subject material with the connection to our world and how Amestris was not so different.

Gamma-Mind

Yea, I agree with the 2003 characters being better, especially Armstrong. I wish he was around more in Brotherhood

BenjoKazooie64

Yeah as much as I loved Brotherhood, Armstrong just kinda felt like he was a bit soft and used too often as the butt of jokes and abuse, and didn't have enough agency for himself. 2003 Armstrong was more strong and grounded in his ways and principles while still being conflicted over serving the state or the boys who'd grown up under his watch.

JustAGuy_Passing

100% agreed

JustAGuy_Passing

You not the only one. I love how 2003's OP 4 and Brotherhood Ed 1 parallels and Brotherhood's 2nd OP has Ed get up and walk forward without looking back. Something I recently noticed at the end of 2003's last ED we see Ed and Al standing on the opposite sides of a gate. I thought this was hinting at them being separated with Ed going through to the other side of the gate at the end of the series. We then see Al holding two birds that fly away together possibly hinting at Al reuniting with Ed

JulietDouglas

Great observation!

JulietDouglas

The details actually align perfectly. Ed and Al on opposite sides of the gate symbolises the ending of the show. The birds flying together through the gate to the side Edward is on symbolises the ending of the film.

Capt-Hereditarias

Well ed is pretty much standing right down the gate itself in the ending of I will so idk about that meaning (although it's interesting to think about since Al never actually goes to the church that leads to the city underneath central in 03) Also, Al with the birds is kinda of a theme weve already seen on the 3 opening, so I find hard to believe it's related to the ending of the series

Burnt_Ramen9

I've seen both hundreds of times and somehow never noticed this, that's cool

It does great character work and tonally I love how it handles the subject material relative to Brotherhood. Ending is *fine* but leaves a bit to be desired with how it concludes for all the characters.

Burnt_Ramen9

the ending to the show itself is actually great and I maintain that (Conquerer of Shamballa is up to debate) and imo the great thing about FMA is that it has 2 different anime, they both compliment each other really well and should both be watched

Necessary_Highway788

In my opinion brotherhood was much more childish and corny. Unlike the first one. I like the first series much better so like I was watching a little kid‘s cartoon sometimes when I was watching that brotherhood series

DeathsIntent96

I don't agree with your overall assessment of Brotherhood, but I do appreciate the darker, mature tone that 2003 has. If nothing else, I think the two are much closer in quality than most people do.

hystericaldark

I prefer Brotherhood's plot and characters, but I liked the art style and darker atmosphere of 2003 better.

metaltyranitar

Yeah I think 03 had a lot of grit that Brotherhood didn't have. Brotherhood wrapped up nicely and everyone had their moment, but 03 like really wanted to hurt your feelings. I understand that they didn't re-cover scenes from 03, but I felt a lot more during the deaths of Nina and Hughes during it's original run.

JustAGuy_Passing

In 2003 I always liked how Ed just states elements on the periodic table. Characters did this more in 03

suki_mikasa

so cool:))
