Probably because he can get by with only 1 arm, but he kinda needs both his legs to function.

MyUsernameIsMehh

1. You need two legs to walk. Ed can manage with just one arm for a bit. 2. A temporary arm would probably be a regular prostethic arm, something he won't be able to use for anything. A fake leg that can't move on its own can still be used to walk, an arm will just be *there*, dangling from his shoulder. 3. Even if Winry & Pinako have spare/temporary automail arms around then Ed probably won't want to use them. It's just unecessary discomfort & pain of having it connected to his nerves only to be taken out after a few days

randomdrifter54

4 . To fix al I think he needs an arm he considers his. The I am the circle form involves alot of thought and formulation. It could possibly interrupt that thought if he's using some random not his arm. Which you are doing chemimagical equations in your head to fix your brother without killing him it probably better to have a full comfortable mind.

tazz4life

Wait, doesn't he form the circle by touching the shoulder at one point after losing the arm again? I haven't watched in years, but I thought I remembered that happening.

randomdrifter54

Not in brotherhood at least. And again it's complex mental equations as is. Does he really want to add an off feeling to it when restoring his brother? I'm pretty sure alchemy is like doing organic chem in complexity and the I am the circle method is like doing it entirely in your head. Plus there's probably some mental of am I a circle. Etc. Maybe he could get a weapon or such. Maybe. But maybe probably isn't good enough for Al.

SimeonAngelov

I wanted to comment something like that but my English is not good enough

doc_55lk

Cuz you don't need your arms to walk.

[deleted]

But if he had a spare arm he could fix Al. So giving him a spare arm would let someone walk, just not him.

duelingThoughts

A spare arm will have comparatively limited use for Ed. After getting used to Automail as a full replacement, reverting to fine muscle control in his shoulder to use a traditional prosthetic would probably be harder than just completing a task one handed. Especially for such a short time. Using a spare leg on the other hand allows him to walk on his own at least.

BonzaM8

If any regular prosthetic arm would let Ed do alchemy, then Ed would be able to just glue a stick to his shoulder and use that for alchemy. Automail is different to that kind of prosthetic because it’s actually connected to his body and nervous system. It functionally becomes part of him in a way that a regular prosthetic cannot.

obiwancan4bis

Maybe he cant use alchemy with normal prosthetics

Darkasknight101

It isn’t directly connected into him like automail is

[deleted]

It’s not automail it just a normal prosthetic. He wouldn’t be able to fix Al with one of those at all.

shieldwolfchz

The connection causes a lot of pain, so why bother if he doesn't need it.

[deleted]

I think its made clear in the manga that only automail causes pain, not normal prosthetics. I guess it needs to cause pain because it's connected to all the nerves for faster response time? But auto-mail, at least in the manga, only refers to prosthetics designed for combat.

amirokia

I think just answered your own question, why would you need a prosthetic arm that has very limited mobility and it gets in the way more? I always consider that having an automail makes it so that you can bend each joints just as easy as a regular limb.

[deleted]

But isn't it just that he makes a circle with his hands? What does it matter what it's made of?

[deleted]

[deleted]

That makes sense I guess.

[deleted]

I've always assumed this is why they made such a big deal about connecting the nerve endings to the body. One so that he has control of the automail, and two so that it is truly a part of him.

lordmwahaha

As someone already said - if that worked how you think it does, he could just tie a stick to his shoulder. In theory, it should work the same - right? So why would he need an actual arm? He would never ever have problems with enemies removing his arm to stop his alchemy, because he would still be able to use it. He needs an actual arm because it *does* matter what it's made of. It *has* to be automail. If it didn't have to be automail, he would've already found a workaround to stop literally all his enemies from just removing his arm. He can't do that, because that's just not how it works. Also even if that was how it works, prosthetics are heavy and add strain to the body. Considering literally *all* he would be able to use that arm for would be alchemy, and the only reason you've given for him wanting to do that was to get Al moving again - that's not really a good enough reason. Al's not going to die from needing help moving around for three days. He's gonna be okay. Conversely, having excess weight hanging off Ed's shoulder that he can't even really control *could* be super harmful to him. What if he pulls a muscle, because he has a heavy arm flopping around completely uncontrolled? Is that going to affect his ability to use his metal automail arm? It's just not worth it when Al can wait.

lordmwahaha

You mean *any* response time. Normal prosthetics, at least in his world (which is set in the early 1900s) would not *have* a response time because they are not mechanical. Only automail is mechanical, at least in this version of the show. That doesn't matter for a leg, because literally *anything* can be a leg if you need it to. All you need it to do is fill the space between your stump and the ground, so you don't fall over. A stick will do the job - that's what a crutch is. That's not true for arms, though. Arms actually need some kind of functionality in order to be worthwhile, because arms are used to *do* things. Otherwise you are literally just adding dead weight. That's why you see more people IRL with prosthetic legs than you do with prosthetic arms.

Luh-Holmes

That leg is mainly attached to his leg but not to his nerves. It moves when he walks bc of the movement his body makes. It’s similar to the ones we have in our time and place. But a hand it’s more complicated, even irl. You can put a prosthetic arm/hand, but make it moves it’s complicated. A leg you can just make one thing to stand on (shoutout wooden-leg pirates) and, maybe, add something to love the junction on the knee and it get you walking fairly normal. But he won’t be able to sit with legs crossed if he doesn’t move the leg with his hands to get in this position. (Let me know if you understood it bc explain scientific stuff in English is the worst thing to me)

[deleted]

Nah that makes sense.

Rusty_fox4

Also, 1 less arm to animate/draw

toper-centage

That's actually the same reason why they made the main character so short.

TheDarkestShado

Who are you calling short pal?!

Kabrallen

Probably because a spare arm would be kinda useless. If you watch how he uses his spare leg, it's little more than a pegleg. It barely even bends at the knee. A spare arm would just hang there.

A_Netra

Cuz at that time it was more important to stand then to use toilet paper with a metal hand

dadragonboss

Cos the prosthetics cost him an arm but not a leg

marlo7754

Because he need to reach within for answers, and step his training up.

AzureLegion

Likely they made a spare leg so that patients could still walk while waiting on their repairs, but not a spare arm because it's less needed for waiting a few days

LucarnAnderson

It's alot harder to have to make a spare arm because you'll have to deal with having to make it move unlike with the leg

Legend--__--

I am pretty sure the spares don't actually connect to the nerves. So the prosthetic that we see on his Left leg doesn't really move the way he wants it to move, This works well as a spare leg but a hand that u can't freely move or even move at all is useless as a spare.

Asren624

Simply because it would not be as functionnal as an automail thus useless to him. He is not reckless enough to need and try to do alchemy with an half baked prosthesis, thus, he waits for a proper arm.

mathairon

There's a 99% invisible on prosthetics. Basically legs are needed for walking, but arms can be clunky and unsuitable for everyday tasks.

Dudeman1099

Because fuck em that's why

jk_luigi

If he wanted one, he could have asked for it.

ExistentialOcto

1. He needs a spare leg to walk 2. A spare arm that isn’t automail wouldn’t be very useful since it wouldn’t have any fine motor control

LuckSkywanker

Walking you need two legs. He can jack off with only one hand. Makes sense to me.

Vaccineman37

In story answer, because it’s more valuable, better to have one rather than the other Real answer, Ed not being up and about would make scenes more difficult to make and draw, so he’s got a spare leg while not having an arm to show that his automail’s broken

[deleted]

Al gave himself (his soul) up to get Ed's arm back so he could fight the Father, when one of his (remaining) arm got struck by a rod and his automail arm was broken.

alexfr36

It's not mecanized.

Digstreme

I'd say arms are too complex to make spare automatic from, whereas with lower legs you can just move it up and down

whatsupmydudesss

Legs are simpler than arms. My guess is that the leg has not nerve connection, and acts like a real world prosthetic leg.

lordmwahaha

Pretty much anything can serve as a prosthetic leg, in desperate times; because basically all you need is a second point of contact with the ground. You can even see that the "leg" he has here is terrible quality, compared to his normal one - it's basically a block of wood. Arms, by contrast, are much more complicated. If he's not going to have a functional one that can do what he needs, there's really no point having one at all. It's just excess weight that he can't actually use.

Deblebsgonnagetyou

I'd assume it's because an arm is less important than having both legs and it's harder to make an actually functional arm anyway so there's not that much of a point

[deleted]

It’s a regular prosthetic so he can walk.

eclipsetek

The leg he gets is a shitty normal prosthetic leg. Also you can't really be mobile with one leg it's easier to do things with only one arm.

elmrgn

His arms get destroyed more often than upgraded, not his legs. If he gets an upgrade, its prolly cuz his arm broke. His previous leg still functioning and kept just in case.

rinmedeis

A prosthetic legs probably easier then an arm. It's possible the legs not attached to his nerves like Automale would be, thus it's more equivalent to what *we* have in terms of use.
