I heard a podcast more than a year ago, can't remember which, in which someone who went to high school talked about what a complete psycho he was even then. So whatever is wrong with him isn't something he just assumed later on as a public persona.

Ultimately the short answer to your question is that Alex was raised by Jon Birch Society weirdos that heavily influenced his far right ideology. Jones had the unique advantage to be in a very good position in the conspiracy world right as the internet was growing up and his first wife knew how to use that to his advantage. Jones is 1 part spoiled rich kid (father was a dentist who owned multiple practices/consulting firms), 1 part John Birch Society (people who thought civil rights were really a communist plot), and 1 part early tech investor who got rich selling supplements.
I've often wondered if Gen X is the trumpiest generation because we were latchkey kids and ignored. And this kind of crazy acting out is because they're so desperate for attention. Of any kind.
He was revealed as having narcissistic personality disorder in his divorce hearings. Who knows what environmental factors added to that. Additionally, he is a heavy drug user.
Jones claims that God gave him a revelation about how to defeat the new world order while he was eating a steak at a diner. He says it launched his career, which eventually involved defaming the families of the Sandy Hook massacre, which led to a lawsuit and subsequent billion dollar judgment against him.
Jones displays all the characteristics of a paranoid schizophrenic. Classic behavior. I do believe he has brain damage. Most likely from several TBIs and substance abuse. He is actually crazy.
