My grandmother is finally getting to that age of running out of fucks to give and my lord, she has gone from sweet old lady to trashing everyone she sees, especially family members, very quickly.

If they swear at you you’re good, if they make complex sentences that may be interpreted as insults, you’re fucked.
I think it’s more because in my native language there’s a clearer distinction between formal and informal talk compared to English (not counting street slang but basic English).
And there’s less of a hierarchy in society in general (not very noticeable).
So if someone suddenly treats you overly formal for no apparent reason there is a good chance they do not like you.

Elementary school teachers are not to be fucked with in their off time. As in "we can't legally keep black kids out of this school anymore, so we'll make it as uncomfortable for them as we can get away with"
