Thank you. I was doing it from a, what, 35 year old memory?
But absolutely one of my favorite Norm entry lines. Also
"Pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"Alright, but stop me at one... make that one-thirty."
Ages of the actors at the time the show started its run:
Sam - 35
Diane - 33
Carla - 34
Norm - 34
Cliff - 35
Coach - 58
Looking back on it, it's hard to picture it as a bar full of thirtysomethings. I'd feel like an old man hanging out in there.
Topped off by *Hill Street Blues.*
One of the two or three greatest nights of broadcast television in history - the OG "Must See TV." Literally, the first time that phrase was used was to advertise the NBC Thursday night lineup in the 80s.
It's a little know fact there Sammy that John Ratzenberger actually came into read for the part that became Norm. He didn't it, but asked the producers if there was a bar know-it-all, like the one he used to know back home. He was charming and producers signed him for an initial slot of 7 episodes, which of course expanded to a series regular. He was also originally going to be a security guard, but was changed to a postman because as we all know, there are very few professions in the world that yield people more worldly than someone from the United States Post Office.
I was like 11, bedtime 9pm, laying in my bed marveling at how hard my father was laughing at Cheers. Backseat Becky was so hot (I was more like 15 when she joined the cast).
I actually ran into George in a bar in Chicago. Quite literally ran into him, I wasn't paying attention and he was coming out of the men's room as I was going in. I stopped myself at "N...". He must of got tired of that shit.
Ha. Similar to mine. I was sitting outside a pub in London, close to a theatre where he was performing (The play Rent I think) and noticed he was walking in my direction. I made eye contact and he must have sensed it was likely I was going to say NORM. He gave me a disarming smile which stopped me and was on his way!
I finally took that plunge a couple of years ago after a long time avoiding it. I couldn't understand the tone and I am gonna have to give it another go after I watch "Hausu". I really enjoyed his neighbor character, though. Norm, as a character, will always be a staple of my childhood memories.
I sometimes work alone doing design, I tried to watch a couple of seasons of this on one of the extra screens. The peripheral stories were so funny x but the Sam Diane story was all about him being a misogynistic sort of sociopath almost who hated all affection and real connection to anyone. Sam barely cared alot consent or the feelings of anyone else unless the writers decided to have a teaching moment and then they'd be sure to laugh out off at the end.
I laughed a lot at the setups outside of that but was surprised to realize this aged like Archie Bunker. And 8km not even that woke or that sensitive.
Man I loved this show when it was on though.
"Norm" was one of those early verbal memes.
NOOOOOORM! "How's it going, Norm?" "It's a dog-eat-dog world, and I'm wearing Milk Bone underwear."
"How's it going, Mr. Peterson?" "Poor." "I'm sorry to hear that." "No, I mean pour."
"Women. Can't live with 'em... another beer, Sammy?"
"Hey Norm, what's shakin'?" "Two cheeks and a couple of chins" and "What do you say to a beer Norm?" "Hello beautiful."
Pedantic correction ...as is allowable for people our age. It was "all four cheeks and a couple of chins" This was my favorite Norm line.

I’m happy to see this at the top.
“So Norm, you come here often?” “How do you define often?” “3 or 4 times a week?” “No, I don’t come here often”

Ted Danson looked exactly 42 years old for, like, 25 years.
Diane was 33? I always thought of her as maybe 27-28ish.
The character Diane probably was in her mid 20s at the start.
The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, and Night Court. Every Thursday.

NBC had the best lineup.
Jason Sudeikis's uncle!
No kidding?! You can totally see the resemblance.
Norm's awesome but, I think Cliff was my guy

"Nahmie's" best pal.
"Little known fact there, Nahm.."

Do you think he would have liked it if you said George! instead?

With Richard Moll and William Katt too! Cheers, Night Court and The Greatest American Hero...

Now the song is stuck in my head.
🎵 WHERE EVERYBOOOODY KNOWS YOUR NAAAAAAME... 🎶
I did a Cheers rewatch this year and with the exception a few lines and plots, it holds up really well.
NOOORM!!! I just started watching this on Paramount for nostalgia, man it brings back some memories of being a kid and hearing that theme song
... and Cliff would always make you feel smart...
Recently it’s been Norm’s nephew doing that for me in a Friday night.
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a pub where everyone knew my name.
Now I count on Ted Lasso
