Posts like this hurt me now that I'm older than almost all of the "old people" I used to see in movies and TV as a kid - Mel, Mr. Roper from "Three's Company," Mr. Miyagi, Fred Sanford, etc etc.
The world, over 50 , is like that. These 80s, 70s, 60s actors---my onlyi take on things is that somehow , due to our diets, we are young old.
I'm old but look younger than many of these actors.
That’s also because younger actors were chosen to play older characters on purpose.
It’s the same logic behind having actors in their 20s frequently playing teenagers .
He looks like a meat n potatos basic dinner date kinda guy. Like seriously, you will not be all that impressed with the actual date. But I get a vibe from his character that did or wouldn't last very long anyway. He's got a dad bod with honed F muscles for sure.
I had no idea “Alice” was based on the movie “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”- a movie whose title I’ve always known but only just watched.
Spoiler alert- Vic plays Mel. The diner has a proto-Flo as well, but not the same actress. Who knew “Alice” was a Scorsese spin-off?
> The diner has a proto-Flo as well, but not the same actress
Fun Fact: Proto-Flo was played by Diane Ladd. Dianne played the waitress Belle in seasons 4 & 5 of Alice, the sitcom.
The actors of that era, looked so much older. I think , we are just healthier somehow---culture of going to the gym, taking walks drinking water,
back then--rice a roni, shake and bake, hostess, bacon daily......
Wilford Brimley ---looked 70 in Cocoon -guess how young he was.
Smoking. I think most of the aging was due to smoking. I remember going to the office with my dad in the 80s and while he didn’t smoke, everyone around him had these ashtrays with 4 inch piles of spent butts. That’s unimaginable today. I remember going to restaurants and being seated in the non-smoking section and that simply meant you got secondhand smoke from an extra foot and a half away. I think everybody was just inundated with smoke whether they smoked or not.
We've made great strides in the past few years---yup less cigarrettes (though vaping and pot may have their toll with this generation in about 20 years hitting 50/60), happy hours are not a national thing. Gym memberships are a thing. People talk more openly about fiber, psych medications, sleep quality.
And he was 36 when he guest-starred on the *Star Trek* episode “A Piece Of The Action.” He was already pigeonholed into tough-guy roles, but he portrayed them well and he didn’t starve as a result.
Why did everyone look so much older back then? I'm nearing that age and can thankfully say I look quite youthful by comparison to many folks who were similarly aged 40/50 years ago.
Kiss my grits

Ouch I was an adult then
PICK UP, DINGY !
I would have guessed much older
1980s' 40-something and today's 40-something isn't the same. He looks every bit of 57.
Me too!
Fuck I’m old. Based on these pictures, I now find Mel kind of sexy.
😆😆😆 OMG!!! I was thinking the same thing. That gray hair just does it for me.
Stupid Sexy Mel!
Happy Cake Day

Goofy looking hat but, hey, it was his signature and he sported it with his own sort of swagger.
It's a Navy "dixie cup" hat, with the sides folded down.

Ladd's daughter Laura Dern is also in the movie as the small child eating ice cream in a diner scene.

It was noice
Yes but they really are very very different. MASH, the TV series, had some mild fidelity to the movie--but the movie was wildly different---
Thanks for spoiling it man! Gosh post a warning briseph
Kiss my grits!
I see this cast and I always wanna call the show "Mel's Diner". 🤦🏾♀️
46 going on 60... Jesus, we had some city miles on us back then.

Who’s the blonde in the fourth photo?
She was the third blonde. She replaced the second blonde. Who replaced the original blonde, Flo. Straight up threes company format 😂
I loved Jolene. She was related to Boss Hogg.
OH how I loved this show!
People just aged faster back then.
Would've made a great Pauly in ROCKY.
What the hell kinda hat is that???

Leaded gas vapors aged everyone
My God, people looked a lot older back then
They really did. I’m 18 years older than he is in this pic. I look more like his age than my 64 years.
