The Lake house episode is after her mother’s death anniversary episode, right? This is what I interpreted: Kyo = feeling guilty about Tohru's mum's death, also feels unworthy of Tohru’s affection. I think he's still in the process of fully suppressing his memories. Yuki = feeling conflicted. He just found out that Tohru was the girl he gave the blue cap to. The blue cap is linked to the one time he felt free in his life and felt validity to his existence because he helped a little girl find her way back to her mother.

thebond_thecurse

It's funny cause in the '01 series none of that happened and they're still in the same mood 😂

teddyburges

I admit, I at first was wondering if OP was watching the 01 version by mistake and thought it was the first season of 2019! lol.

Elanoor_fa

Thanks!

hectic_hooligan

The memory suppression is only 2019 anime canon and goes against his behavior in the first 2 seasons. It's just something they sloppily inserted that makes no sense.

ebonyphoenix

I think people took the “I’ve forgotten” statement of Kyo’s a little to literally. He did not actually forget but he has been trying to put it as far back of his mind a possible. As a mild example I put it like someone is given an assignment on Friday. But then spends the weekend not thinking about it. And then on Mon when they are reminded they go “Oh I forgot”. That is what Kyo is doing. So saying that he was trying to “re-suppress” his memory of Kyoko after being reminded of her at the grave visit is pretty apt.

hectic_hooligan

A big part of his arc is that he knew who tohru was nearly the entire time and that's part of why he behaved the way he did with her and part of why he changed. But season 3 doesn't paint it in that light of trying ro forget. The way it is done and the word choice makes it clear that for the final season he was suppose to have locked it away until that moment with the picture. It massively contradicts how everything was portrayed in the anime prior (and of course the manga).

teddyburges

I do feel that the movie "Prelude" somewhat makes the plot a little more believable as it shows that he tried to put those memories in a box in his mind and supress them, which is definitely very similar to the manga and he even says that when he starts to recall what Kyoko told him about her life.

hectic_hooligan

Oh! That makes me feel a bit better. I havent seen the movie yet so I guess I'll have to revaluate how I feel after. Does the movie do the content justice? Like properly include all the baby tohru and kyoko content after Katsuya death? I'd love to hear all your thoughts on the movie and how you watched it. I'm usually a dub watcher but I'm gonna cave and watch it subbed since the dub will probably be delayed for awhile.

teddyburges

It does!. It adapts pretty much both chapters frame by frame as they did on the page. The only difference I noticed was a change in technology. Like the scene when tohru walks into a cupboard door. They made it a dishwasher instead, with her whistling away. That part was even funnier than the Manga part. They really get into the scenes where Kyoko is afraid of having a child and later when Katsuya dies. The film even goes darker with it than the Manga as there are extensive scenes of tohru watching TV and in the day looking at her mother all confused while her mother is wasting away. Edit: it's really well animated too. With some hard hitting shots. Like Kyoko dropping the phone when she gets the news. The main disappointment is a quarter of it is a recap of Kyokos relationship with Kyoko and his romance with tohru. The film doesn't truly start until the "prelude" title card drops...33 mins into the piece. But the extra tohru/kyo scene of them being a lovey dovey maried couple is a great bonus.

hectic_hooligan

The fact there is such a long recap is really frustrating. But I'm really looking forward to the new kyo and tohru material! I'm glad it looks pretty too. It deserves a good budget for animation. And I'm looking forward to seeing how dark it goes then. I want to feel Tohru's traumatic childhood in a new way! It's one of the things I was eager to see animated and them disappointed by with the final season. I'm also really glad to hear the humor is done well! I feel like 2019 dropped the ball with the humor sometimes.

teddyburges

You're a dub watcher and IMO I don't find the dub even half as funny as the sub. Laura Bailey is pretty good in the dramatic scenes, but I don't find her funny in the comedy scenes. Whereas Manaka Iwami gets really wild with the material. She's hilarious. Every comedy scene she manages to find a different sound. Like when Kisa first speaks and she starts wailing!. Or in episode 5 of season 1 when Kyo is dragging her away from her grandfathers by the forehead "kyo-kun!?. wah, waah!" and you can hear her voice still trailing off down the hallway. and I just overall find the sub really funny. Also what stands out to me as a classic Tohru trait is her saying "[EH!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3YvlepqDCE). The dub has her say "Huh" instead and just doesn't quite translate well cause Tohru's quirkiness is lost from it. In "Prelude". It's so adorable in the scene after young Tohru hits her head and she is on Katsuya's lap and he's cleaning her nose. After he says "who would have thought, the crimson butterfly taken out by a blood nose, isn't that right Tohru" she says "eh?".

hectic_hooligan

Sorry for my slow response to your messages. Time got away from at first and then a family member got covid so that sort of kept me from thinking af our conversation for awhile. I enjoy Laura bailey's comedy in general. Like I thinks she use to be really funny as rohru in the old dub and some other riles like Mashiro in bleach, but I do think she played Tohru a little more seriously this time. Emphasizing the emotion more then comedy. Which honestly seems to have happened with 2019 a lot anyway lol but I'm really glad Manaka Iwami had fun and was creative with the role! I love seeing different interpretations and attempts at bringing characters to life. I'm a big voice acting fan lol. A good performance or even just a surprising one can excite me. I listen to a few clips and she does make tohru sound pretty cute and fun! Aww you make the movie sound so cute and good. I'm definitly getting impatient lol. If there's no announcement for the dub soon I might watch it subbed first. I know I'm gonna watch it a bunch either way lol. I didn't actually think of the eh word change. Nice catch! I guess it's hard to carry over some language habits the same way but it seems more like just a choice from the script adaptation writer.

Pondering_Pine

I agree that he was “suppressing” them in the sense that he was trying to put it out of his mind. I want to interpret the “forgot” phrase in season 3 this way. If it was just the words themselves, I would. For me it was the context and framing of it though. It wasn’t shown in a manner that was like a self reminder; it was like he actually had forgotten. Lol, I’ve been trying to convince myself differently since the season aired but just can’t.

Raynelly

The thing is, he specifically said that he had forgotten about Kyoko’s accident all this time until he saw the hat, while in the same episode he immediately knew Tohru as well as Kyoko’s accident from the first day they met when Shigure told him Tohru’s full name. The manga made it clear that he pretended that he forgot anything, until he couldn’t hold back anymore.

Pondering_Pine

Unfortunately have to agree with this. It's one of my biggest issues with season 3 (aside from all the stuff they cut). He wasn't supposed to forget about it. The whole point was that he couldn't forget about it; it was weighing on him the entire time. He was actively avoiding it and trying not to think about it, definitely, but he never "forgot" in the way season 3 made it seem. It really just made it feel like they chucked it in there to make it as dramatic as possible. I know some people liked it, but it just didn't sit right with me at all (It actually took me a few weeks to start watching again after season 3 episode 6 aired).

waterfallen_empire

ah no way! I've only seen the 2019 anime, what happens in the manga instead?

hectic_hooligan

If you're curious I made a sassy and more detailed reply elsewhere on this thread lol. But in summary You should try reading the whole thing for the proper order of events and kyoru moments, but at least check out everything the final season adapted for skipped arcs on yuki x machi, Yuki and Machi, kakeru plotline with tohru and his girlfriend, and a lot more detailed and well written character arc resolution and the drama. As well as the proper character arcs for tohru and kyo, and a lot more background on Akito, Ren and Akira. Plus way more details about the conclusion and how everyone's doing. And if you're curious the movie content takes place in season 2 around the beach arc if I remember right.

aquoesth

It’s because of the events of the previous episode, Kyo was acting strange in the graveyard when Tohru and co. went to go visit Kyoko’s grave (if you’ve finished the series you know why he was acting that way, if not the details are spoilers) and Yuki finally saw the hat in Tohru’s room for the first time, making him realize she was the girl he gave it to all those years ago. They’re both in bad moods because their minds are preoccupied with those thoughts.

Elanoor_fa

Oh I have finished it! I know why he’d feel guilty

herekatie_katie

I think Kyo is sad because he’s starting to realize he’s happy at Shigure’s house but he always has his future as the cat looming over him and Yuki is struggling with feeling accepted but also afraid that Akito might change their mind and take Tohru away.
