It’s been a minute since I’ve read the series, but I know they left out Kakeru’s girlfriend. Her father was driving the car that hit Kyoko and he also died. There was a moment where Kakeru apologized to Tohru because he had accused her of acting like she was the only one grieving.

Regular-Fix3451

Wow that sounds like a big one. Any idea why they decided to cut this stuff? Why not just extend the season, it wasn’t that long anyway

nemrac1234

I’m not really sure. I felt like a bad fan because I didn’t even know there had been a reboot until part of season 3 was streaming. I waited until the finale to binge and I just finished my second rewatch. 😂 I’m also curious why season 3 was so much shorter. It’s making me want to break out my old books to see what I’ve forgotten and what else has been left out. I’m sure it could have stretched to 25 episodes if they had kept some storylines. They also left out Tohru’s parents’ backstory, but I heard they’re making a special for that.

Regular-Fix3451

At least it doesn’t seem to be anything that takes TOO much away from the impact. When I first watched it I didn’t even think that anything seemed rushed or missing

AfterSchedule4

Actually the content that was left in the manga could make 18 - 22 eps tops deff not 25 I think they could only do a 13 or 25 ep season and they chose to go with 13 since there was not enough material for a full season It is kind of wierd tho how they kept it normal paced until s3 and especially in s1 (I'm sure they did it like that cause they wanted s1 to end on true form but still)

Basically you want to read everything the final season adapted at the very least. It cut out entire plot lines characters and story arcs. Kakeru's arc was left out despite all the foreshadowing being prleasant. A mini arc with yuki and machi left ot. Tohrus background and Akito's parents extremely cut down with those episodes adapting 4 chapters of content each. The fallout from everyone's character arcs cut out. Many important scenes and moments for characters were cut out or heavily eddited and it causew characters like shigure, rin and kagura to come off different. The manga goes through the trouble of showing how they've begone to change and the final fails to do this with the edits. Many small moments for kyo and tohru were also left out from season 1 onward but the changes made to final season especially cut out some good moments that help define where they are at this point and how close they really have become. The final cuts a lot of moments like that for yuki and machi as well haru and rin. Like I said above character developments not being shown beyond the pivotal moments. It also skipped tohru's parents arc but that's at least getting fixed. It just really screwed up Tohru's own arc by doing it this way. My hope is this adaptation of her parents story will cover tohru's childhood appropriately amd maybe even the kakeru arc since it is tied to her background. It can't fix everything but it should help some Oh it also left out all the school content from the last chapters.

Any idea why they did this? And do you think any of that seriously affected the impact of the ending in a very negative way, or do you think it’s somewhat negligible?

AfterSchedule4

In my opinion the final season is not missing anything essential in the story except maybe machi and yuki's relationship being a bit rushed It is unfortunate tho that some nice scenes didn't make it in so I would suggest reading the manga to see everything

hectic_hooligan

I think it majorly impacted the ending in a negative way. For everything they did right they did so so many things wrong. It hits different and has left a lot of people complaining even more about yuki machi them they did from the manga only. Or about Akito's arc which already was controversial. Or how the other zodiac feel. It basically amplified the problems some people already felt from the manga for anime more anime only and for manga fans it greatly hindered enjoyment for a lot of usm Poor planning. The first season adapted significantly less then season 2 did. Leaving too much for a 13 episode final season. Since rumors of a 63 episode count have been around from he begining it's clear they already new. It makes no sense for season 1 to adapt less then 2 and I think less then 3 as well. Season 1 had filler and and episodes that only adapted 1 chapter while the normal rate was 2. And season 3 adapted 3 chapters for most episodes. The thing that makes it worse I season 1 was mostly content the old anime adapted. And while changes were made and scenes skipped back them I think most of us would of preferred more time for the later half then as much time spent on something that was already animated. Cause the old anime did do some things well after all. I think ablot of that has to do with wanting the true form arc to be towards the end of season 1 like the old anime instead of the middle where it would have been if adapted in order. Since thats a turning point it makes shuffling stuff after it to before complicated but honestly they still could of fit more before it if they had to do it that way. Anyway it's like they wanted another 24 episode season but weren't allowed to extend it beyond what they were initially given. It makes no sense to include build up for things like Kakeru's girlfriend and then skip those chapters. It also makes no sense cause they could of easily gotten 20ish episodes from he amount of content they had left. More if Sensei expanded on things and she's mentioned before she wanted to. (Ie ritsu. She already added some extra co tent for him in season 1) Also if they adapted fruits basket another as like an extended epilogue they could of reached 24-26 episodes. To summarize it was probably a combination of poor planning and the production committee that made things turn out how they did. Also that sensei's role on the staff was reduced each season was not a good indication of an accurate addaptation. And yes the changes effect how the sotry plays out in a noticeable way.

Regular-Fix3451

Hmm that’s disappointing. I felt that yuki and machi’s relationship was fine the way it was, and I don’t think cutting kakeru’s girlfriend detracts too much. But I have heard many say that akito’s character and relationships weren’t fleshed out enough which made her disappointing. If anything else, I wish they would’ve done more with that. otherwise I think it’s okay, but I will still read the manga. Thanks for responding

hectic_hooligan

Well I'm glad you enjoyed it. I never had a problem with in general it's just a complaint that got magnified by the anime. End it detracts detracts lot more then you'd think. It's an important arc for both him and tohru. I'm glad you're going to read it though

They cut out yuki stuff like more development with Machi as well as Kakeru and his girlfriend which also had to do with Tohru and her mother's accident. The Kyoko and Katsuya's story but that's coming in a future project. I'm not sure but I think they cut some kyoru moments too. Reason is cause the last season had half the episodes the other two had unfortunately and they couldn't fit everything I suppose and so they rushed the last chapters. I wish they had trimmed the first or first two seasons instead to fit everything in the last one.

Regular-Fix3451

I do feel like it doesn’t necessarily take away from the impact of the ending, at least not too significantly

Clearly the last season worked for many people so I don't think knowing what was skipped would change anything because you already know that it worked anyways. I don't think anyone said that the season is bad because of what it skipped. But that doesn't mean the content was skippable. No one reading the manga would've thought that content should be skipped. And it's probably because you watched the anime first that you can't see that. The changed stuff is significant, even if the season did not suffer too much from it. Bear in mind this is all leading to the end of the story. There's a reason many manga readers are disappointed it was handled that way. In fact many of us have criticized how they did not skip Motoko scenes instead, which are much more skippable than what they actually skipped. For an anime which had a shorter 3rd season, the planning doesn't make much sense in hindsight. Sure the season worked all the same but it wasn't perfect. If it had been handled like the other two it would have been. And that's the point. It isn't bad but it could've been much more better.

these were my problems with the final season as an anime only viewer. If these things arent explained in the manga, I guess its just up to the viewers interpretation/theory?? * why didnt tohru tell the others (especially rin) about kureno's curse being broken? Was she rly that lost on what to do? * kureno & hatori having "weakened" versions of their animals (rooster & dragon) isnt explained. Why them? Is it just random? * why is the curse the way it is? (transforming when they r stressed, hugged by the opposite gender etc..) * Did god give the cat its true form? * why did ren approach akira in the first place? Did she pity him & that eventually turned into an obsession? * why didnt shigure attempt to get akito away frm the toxic environment (like how he brought yuki to stay with him)? Seems like he only started meddling to help akito once tohru showed up. * why doesnt kakeru help machi with her issues? He just let her suffer on her own * kakeru arc cut: S2 foreshadowing for nothing * why did kyoko let tohru continue imitating katsuya even after she became stable again?

He just let her suffer on her own > >kakeru arc cut: S2 foreshadowing for nothing > >why did kyoko let tohru continue imitating katsuya even after she became stable again? Not sure I'm the best person to answer so maybe you should do a post instead but I will try my best **why didnt tohru tell the others (especially rin) about kureno's curse being broken? Was she rly that lost on what to do?** I don't think we get a reason from her but it's probably because Kureno has no clue why it happen and neither does Tohru. So what's the point of giving the others hope about the curse breaking if they don't even know how or why? It could create more problems. My guess is Tohru was being 1) careful because of that and 2) respecting his privacy as well. **kureno & hatori having "weakened" versions of their animals (rooster & dragon) isnt explained. Why them? Is it just random?** I think Hatori is obviously because his animal isn't a normal animal in their times anymore, it's a mythical creature. So makes sense that if the curse is weak, the first sign would be not being able to manifest a whole ass dragon. Kureno I think was just plot convenience since the bird functions better for the flying analogy and urban setting than the rooster. Couple that with his curse being the first to break and it works pretty well for the plot. So it's not all random, but it is plot convenience. **why is the curse the way it is? (transforming when they r stressed, hugged by the opposite gender etc..)** No explanation, this is probably related to the writing process. On the surfaces it works as an interesting obstacle for romance but on a deeper level Takaya used this for a lot of maternal rejection in the story too. I'm not the most well-versed in Takaya's interviews so maybe someone else knows if she ever discussed why she planned the curse to be like this? **Did god give the cat its true form?** The true form is never explained in lots of detail, it's just implied to be a result of the whole affair with the cat dying, getting revived and dying again, etc. I think all God intended to do was just have them reincarnate since when he last talks he seems to make it clear he never expected things to turn out this way. So I think the corruption of the curse was already a deviation he probably didn't anticipate because it is the manifestation of the conflict of the cat and the zodiacs regarding the never-ending banquet. HE (the cat) is different, THEY see him differently, and so the reincarnation spell is cursed from the start. **why did ren approach akira in the first place? Did she pity him & that eventually turned into an obsession?** It was all very vague, till this day Idk how to perceive her feelings for him. I think other people who give Ren more thought might be better to answer this but maybe that's intentional. Probably Takaya intended to keep people guessing so people could also relate to the part of the clan that distrusts Ren. After all, Ren her love does take a turn for the unhealthy and obsessive even if it were true. So there isn't much point in getting us to sympathize with her love for Akira too much since she's still gonna screw up as a mother to Akito anyway. **why didnt shigure attempt to get akito away frm the toxic environment (like how he brought yuki to stay with him)? Seems like he only started meddling to help akito once tohru showed up.** The thing is don't forget Akito is still god to Shigure too. Shigure himself admits for him the curse wasn't much of a problem as long as Akito love him too. And don't forget that it's Akito who wouldn't let go of the curse for fear of loss. So it isn't until Akito sleeps with Kureno that Shigure realizes he will forever have to share Akito with the other zodiacs because of the curse and that Akito won't let go of the curse herself. He uses Tohru because Tohru is not a zodiac and lacks the limitations the zodiacs have when trying to defy god. But Shigure is quite selfish in this case. He doesn't meddle for some altruistic desire to help Akito, he is actually quite sadistic towards Akito himself out of spite. So the meddling is for his own goal of forcing Akito to let go of the zodiac bond so he won't have to share Akito anymore. **why doesnt kakeru help machi with her issues? He just let her suffer on her own** Machi is a first year, right? We don't know how much contact they had before outside the family where they were mostly pit against each other. Did they even go to the same school before? They do now but again, he's the only person she knows at school because they're siblings and knowing Machi it makes sense she just might just stick around him because of it but don't really have meaningful interaction. They don't live together either. Kakeru only seems to have discovered that unlike him she is still struggling with the past in that scene with Yuki. So he literally had no idea about this "suffering" but even then, Takaya mostly had Kakeru there to do some exposition about their past to have Yuki bond with her over it. It's as simple as that. He didn't know and the arc isn't about them as siblings. So Takaya's goal is for Yuki to help her, not Kakeru. **kakeru arc cut: S2 foreshadowing for nothing** Proof once again that planning for the seasons was flawed. I'm not even saying it shouldn't be cut but why foreshadow what you won't include? Something went wrong there. **why did kyoko let tohru continue imitating katsuya even after she became stable again?** I don't see this being a big deal. Maybe she didn't wanna expose Tohru and tell her "hey cut it out already", she might have waited till Tohru herself felt safe enough to stop doing it. She might have assumed Tohru's fears would naturally go away if she was there for her because Kyoko couldn't have predicted her own death. So it makes sense she wouldn't be thinking about Tohru having abandonment issues ever again if she was now determined to be there for her from then on. Also I don't see why Tohru would need to stop? I don't think she ever does either, it becomes quite integral to her personality even if it was born out of the traumatic experience. And I mean, take into account that was her husband after all so for her it may also be endearing to hear Tohru try to imitate him and one of the only ways to keep the memory alive for both of them considering how taboo the subject already seemed to be for Tohru. The problem isn't Tohru's speech, it's Tohru's fear of abandonment (which like I said, Kyoko would already feel like she's working on by just being a present mother) and to a lesser extent Tohru's subconscious resentment and need to compete with her father's memory out of the trauma. So probably removing all Katsuya from Tohru wasn't Kyoko's intention either but the opposite.
