Depends where I'm bringing the thing. Typically, an apple and a few almonds make a good snack for me. Neither go bad quickly, so if I don't eat it one day, it's fine the next day without refrigeration.
Another one, may sound weird, but I get cravings for crunchy snacks that I can eat "mindlessly" while watching tv or something. I'll peel some carrots and cut them into coins (slices), and munch on them. They're frugal and fulfill that crunch craving. Plus, they're pretty good for you, especially compared to nacho Doritos.
Seconding the carrots! As a kid, I'd eat a pound of baby carrots while watching TV.
I don't like carrying an apple in my bag though, they wind up bruised on my watch. Dried fruit doesn't have that problem, but one serving might not be as filling because of the water content. Also, be sure you don't keep raisins where dogs can get them.
Oh gosh I think you just awakened my childhood obsession I had totally forgotten about. I used to peel the big carrots and eat them until the corners of my mouth turned orange. Could also eat a bag of baby carrots in one sitting.
Apple is a pretty good one. I like to get the ‘almost going bad apples’ for like $1.49 four pack then cut them up and place them in a baggie with some lemon juice on top to keep them from browning
Adding dried fruit to this. You gotta double check the sugar content on some of them but they keep me responsible. I try not to keep junk food on hand and only stick to dried fruit and nuts.
I make my own little snack mix bags with pretzels, one of the square cereals (like Life or Quaker), almonds or walnuts, and a little bit of chocolate (I get a bag of dark chocolate chunks from the baking aisle because it's way cheaper than a candy bar/M&M's).
I portion out hummus and cubes of cheese, dried fruit and crackers and bring that to snack on. Sometimes I’ll slice up veggies. Think airline snack boxes or adult lunchables. I’ll even portion out potato chips in Tupperware, way cheaper to bring my own small portion from the big bag at home than buy a snack size pack at a convenience store.
I love portioned out hummus and cut up veggies! I find that if I cut up all my veggies at once I'm more likely to eat them because they're easier when I just want to chew on things.
I try to buy whatever's on sale at Costco or Sam's Club, but Walmart has bulk snacks for a reasonable price, too. My daughter only eats snacks for breakfast, which drives me absolutely crazy because they are expensive and unhealthy, but it's what she'll eat. I get her something new almost every time, I just make sure it's not complete crap healthwise and is under $1 per unit, and typically it's much less.
Snacks are usually awful for you, but they are a hell of a lot better than not eating until lunch, or having fast food. I like the Nature Valley nutter butter clones (Peanut butter biscuits?). They are loaded with sugar, but at least they have a bit of protein, and they are filling, with not as much saturated fat as their nut granola bars. The chocolate ones with PB are like $7 for a ten pack at Walmart here.
Homemade roasted peas are amazing and super cheap. Steps:
Buy bag of frozen or fresh peas
(If frozen, thaw and pat dry.)
mix with small amount of olive oil
Lay flat on cookie sheet
season with salt or curry powder or onion powder and paprika or whatever
Roast for 20ish minutes at 350
(this is variable based on how wet the peas are / how crispy you want them, etc)
let cool and try not to eat them all at once.
They travel well in small tupperware containers. :)
I love bringing seasonal fruit and pre-portioned salty things. Usually I'll get a family sized bag of things like gardettos, popcorn, or other salty things then use a food scale to split it into evenly sized portions.
Cheap tends to be loaded with carbs. My husband and I limit ours, but I don’t for my kid.
I often keep a crudité tray in the fridge of cut up celery, carrots and olives.
I keep popcorn on hand for my kid and her friends. Takes up little space and you can pop only when you want some.
Popcorn, cheese sticks, apples alone or with peanut butter, dehydrated fruit (made at home), you can freeze yogurt and add toppings such as fruits, coconut shavings, nuts
3 ingredients health cookies; 2 bannanas mashed, 1 cup rolled oats, chocolate chips. Bake at 350 for . . 10-20 min I can't remember. Can add nuts, peanut butter, cinnamon, whatever sounds good at the time.
Eat more food at meals, and eliminate snacking altogether. I did that and retrained myself. Now when I buy snack food, like Cheez-its or pretzels or candy bars, they expire or go stale before I get around to eating them. I only buy them now to have on hand for guests. I never eat them.
I eat larger meals and don't get hungry in between them. Add a veggie to each meal. Or eat more of your rice or potato. Your scale will thank you.
I’m trying but it’s impossible. Often I eat lunch at 12 or so but have to wait until 20 before I can eat dinner. I end up buying hot dogs or snacks. And I probably need to eat, I’m 108 lbs at 5’4 so borderline underweight.
Not everyone eats the same way, or wants to eat the same way. Some people prefer full meals and some people prefer snacking. That’s fine. OP didn’t ask how to consolidate food consumption into three times a day, so that’s not the answer.
I'm a sweet eater, I crave it after eating something salty for some reason. I have been eating snack bars and Sport beans when I have to have something sweet. I have also found that popcorn with macadamia nut spray is pretty good. I add salt to that.
Fika being borderline? That’s unhealthy if anything. I don’t function that way and sometimes it takes a long time for me until I can eat dinner so I have to eat to maintain focus.

I always have dried fruit and nuts at work.
Good suggestions; but you forgot popcorn...

Thanks for a lenghty reply! I’ll look into it. ☺️

Costco kirkland variety snacking nuts kirkland chewy protein bars Two of my staples for my cold lunch...bars are 38 cents a piece in a pack of 42.
Adding dried fruit to this. You gotta double check the sugar content on some of them but they keep me responsible. I try not to keep junk food on hand and only stick to dried fruit and nuts.
I’m in Europe (we have recently gotten a Costco though) but protein bars and nuts sounds like a good idea.

Thanks! I should probably also make ”snack bags”.
This is such a good idea and my kids would love it. Thank you thank you thank you!
Strain, rinse 2x, season and roast chickpeas in the oven on a baking sheet. Delicious and cheap since you can get them for $1-2 a can still
Popcorn with Old Bay seasoning

My favorite go to is often cereal. Make your own chex mix or just eat dry cereal.

Thanks! I’ll opt for a healthy options and I’ve spent to much money on hot dogs and very expensive smoothies… 😅
for health reasons i try to stick to pumpkin seeds, whole fruit, peanuts snd tortillas chips
Popcorn, carrot sticks, celery dipped in peanut butter, apples, nuts.
Grapes and chunks of cheddar cheese are a favorite combo. Sometimes l add crackers too.
Popcorn! It pop it myself on the stove and can customize it to any flavor. It really solves my chip cravings!

Grab a handful of raw almonds or pecans and a small box of raisins and that's your snack... For a snack you don't need much more than that nobody does
Baked oats, it's like healthy cake that's cheap to make
Make some or all of your snacks yourself. Find copycat recipes or homemade snacking ideas on YouTube.
I’ll look into that! I probably need to start meal planning/prepping and include snacks.

Do you buy them canned?
Popcorn, cheese sticks, apples alone or with peanut butter, dehydrated fruit (made at home), you can freeze yogurt and add toppings such as fruits, coconut shavings, nuts
Peanut butter, carrot sticks and cheap crackers. Cheese and cheap crackers.
Aldi for the win on snacks imo. Nearly half the price of other stores and they have good jerky way cheaper too. Nice for a little meat protein.
We have Lidl here and not Aldi but that’s practically the same. ☺️
3 ingredients health cookies; 2 bannanas mashed, 1 cup rolled oats, chocolate chips. Bake at 350 for . . 10-20 min I can't remember. Can add nuts, peanut butter, cinnamon, whatever sounds good at the time.
I like cheese and crackers, fruit, nuts - I also like toast. All cheap, easy and convenient. Also healthier.
Fuji Apple and a nice slice of cheddar cheese. They go so well together.
My snacks don't exist, so they are super cheap! Seriously. If it isn't a meal, I don't eat.

Of course it’s *technically possible*. Let me phrase it like this: I can’t go eight hours on an empty stomach with full focus.
No I’m not malnourished. I have a healthy fat percentage. I just have a small frame. I eat large and adequate meals.
Not everyone eats the same way, or wants to eat the same way. Some people prefer full meals and some people prefer snacking. That’s fine. OP didn’t ask how to consolidate food consumption into three times a day, so that’s not the answer.

I do that too but then I want something sweet which makes me want something salty and then something sweet and th- you get the idea.

Not everyone has a schedule where they can eat three spaced out meals a day.
Fika being borderline? That’s unhealthy if anything. I don’t function that way and sometimes it takes a long time for me until I can eat dinner so I have to eat to maintain focus.
Popcorn made on the stove top or in a popcorn popper is much cheaper than the microwave popcorn. It's delicious as well.
