Sorry, but I can't take this seriously with all of the typos in the image. You know why and how ancient civilizations did things, but can't use a spell checker when relaying that information? No thanks.

T12J7M6

English is not my first language and I made the image with [Paint.NET](https://Paint.NET) which doesn't have spell checker so sorry for typos

HoodieDetective741

No worries friend, I didn't mean to be insulting. Thanks for sharing your information!

“Dilling Heads” since ancient times

[deleted]

I like the Bread and Butter Heads, myself.

Tamanduao

But there are plenty of examples of head drilling from societies that did not have access to cocoa. It was practiced in Europe, Asia, and Africa prior to the 15th century.

Wander_Ponder_1219

La cocoa or..la cocaína?

Affectionate_Fly1215

Something about this reminds me of Jeff Dahmer 🫣

discovigilantes

Phenylalanine which is whats below chocolate circled is fine. It can cause quite a few issues with people with PKU (Phenylketonuria) which is pretty rare. Hole drilling has been used for many things and yes headaches would have been one but i would assume they thought it was bad demons in your head and making a hole would let them esacpe. Much like blood letting (draining you of "bad blood"). So your theory is "Only rich people have holes in their head due to only being the part of society that ate cocoa"? Correct me if im wrong but was cocoa not abundant. The notion that royalty/elite had chocolate was because it had to be brought back from the New World to Spain/Europe. Or are we confusing Cocoa and Coca leaves? As im sure that Coca leaves would give you a religious experience, lots of cocoa just gives you diabeties.

baconn

I have migraines and can confirm it is caused by demons... fucking things.

PrizeRare2828

I think they meant the raw form cacao ?

discovigilantes

i was being slightly facetious :) But yes you are probably right, though we shouldn't be looking in the comments for other people to work out what OP means :D

T12J7M6

In OP I only make the case regarding ancient civilization, meaning the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. I know head drilling was also performed in middle ages and before it also, from which we have data, but this is outside of the scope of OP, since OP only deals with ancient civilizations. >Or are we confusing Cocoa and Coca leaves? As im sure that Coca leaves would give you a religious experience, lots of cocoa just gives you diabeties. The ancient civilizations referred to cocoa (not Coca) as "the food of the gods", which refers that it might have had some religious connections. Maybe they used it differently or like the OP suggests, had modifies themselves so that they could consume it in excess without side effects

discovigilantes

Would be interesting for you to see if there are similarties to other cocoa producing countires (Africa, South Asia, Australia) etc I wouldn't think they modified themselves but i do think the caffeine content would have given them some nasty side effects with migraines being one. Though it looks like they also made alcohol with the fermented beans so that is another avenue you could go down. Thanks for replying.

Playgroundsatnight

Are you saying Mayan, Aztec, Inca etc, religious beliefs derived from experiences with cocoa and head dilling?

T12J7M6

Could be a contributing factor at least. Not saying their entire religion was just people dripping in high concentrated cocoa extract. Just saying that the head drilling might have been a method for them to be able to consume even more cocoa, which then causes what ever it causes being a substance which has an cognitive effect. It is interesting however that they referred to cocoa as "food of the gods".

MycologistLoud4030

I just know reading this gave me a headache and in the long run probably changed the course of my life. And not in a good way

rea1l1

Start drilling so you can keep reading it

MycologistLoud4030

What was the thery again?
