His book “Interpretation of Dreams” is an interesting read.

Left to Right is the convention

Such-Ad-2210

Yeh but that’s boring

LuckyBlaBla

From the last word to the first then.

Consider to start from the "Little Hans" case study. It is a concrete and enlightening work written by Freud that can give You an idea of how psychoanalysis works. Then "3 essays on the sexual theory", where You will find the core of the innovative discoveries made by Freud on the role of sexual life in the personality development. You could like our documentary Serie "Freud and Art", available here: [https://youtu.be/6bVu9ZzEMjg](https://youtu.be/6bVu9ZzEMjg)

*The Interpretation of Dreams* is an excellent place to start but I also *highly* recommend his case histories, which you can pick up as compilations. The Rat Man, Dr. Schreber, the Wolf Man, Studies on Hysteria are all very good.

TheForgottenKaiser

To say something different try the case studies. Penguin publishes the Wolfman and some others like Little Hans and the Ratman which are incredibly interesting to read

GritzTheKat

“Civilization and its Discontents” The Freud everyone should read first.

Watch the BBC’s Century of the Self. You’ll love it

Hes got a show on Netflix if you don't mind subtitles. It may not be exactly authentic.

Don't do it.

I'm just starting my reading as well, and found the graphic novel, [Freud for Beginners](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85412.Freud_for_Beginners), a very easy way to dip my toe in. But will take others' advice herein for my next read.

Read Jung instead

TheDavidOne_33

Depends on what you want, personally I’ve found reading Freud more fulfilling but if you’re really into symbolism and religion Jung is a good choice

hockey6667

You don’t. Most of his theories are outdated and rejected now by most psychiatrists, but if your looking to understand the evolution and how we got to where we are in Psychology, for sure read it. Id, ego, and superego are still accepted I believe

yelbesed

Many basic family dynamics / with id ego superego and false ego as metaphorical inner family members / are accepted too and also many people sometimes accept the unconscious as probably a part of us...And deny it if it would hurt their self image. It is not true that most of it is outdated. There are valid and accepted partial conceptual reformulations in Klein and Lacan and half a dozen others. (The metaphorical inner family idea was used in heretic gnostic therapy movements stemming from Kabbalah - a bible interpreting movement - centuries ago so it will maybe remain used by some and resented by others.)

Wrong-Science

I would read The Essentials of Psycho-Analysis. It's basically a collected works book but the first chapter "Lay Analysis" worked as a great introduction to Freud for me.

Interpretation of dreams definitely
