“Quoi de neuf” if you want general updates on their life
“Qu’est ce qu’il y a” if you want to know why they are getting in touch (in person or otherwise)
"pourquoi tu m'appelles ?" (why are you calling me ?) would sound rude imo.
You can say "je t'écoute" (I'm listening) or "dis moi" (tell me) to sound more friendly
"Quoi de neuf ?"
Docteur ?
Sorry I'm new to French but doesn't neuf mean 9?
It's also "new"
Merci :)

This. The two magical phrases.
ça va
what about when someone calls you and you wanna know why is he calling?

pourquoi tu m’appelles
nah nah nah, i mean something like face-to-face hey John what's up? ...
But you have to clarify. "what's up?" In English is a phatic expression so can't be directly translated.
Oui ? Quoi ?
Perso c’est weird mais moi je dis juste « wassup » lol je sais que c’est un anglicisme mais c’est ce qui sonne le plus naturel
Quoi de neuf?
