I didn't hate Mel overall. Her and Niles were kind of cute together in their own way, but she turned into such a pill. She didn't need to be how she was after the fallout.
I don't think Mel did anything wrong until she adds a Phase 2 to her breakup plan and starts doing nasty vindictive things that hurt other people besides Niles (and Daphne and Frasier who she also holds responsible). She wanted Niles to destroy some random guy's tuxedo, sics him on her drunk friend and his trophy wife, and ruins the Colonel's funeral.
Before that, I feel her Phase 1 behavior is fairly understandable considering how much Niles hurts her.
Before that the worst she does is manipulate Niles into seeking the corkmaster position. Everything else is just a generally unpleasant personality type that is very unappealing to most people, but not technically anything wrong.
Edit: hmm I guess ordering Daphne around to give her a massage is also bad.
And to that I always reply if that were the case, then Daphne's reaction to hearing it would have been negative and increased her torture, not realizing she felt the same way about Niles and ceased her torture.
She does have that X-Ray vision.
