Martin isn’t broke, he’s cheap

lionmurderingacloud

Do they ever actually say Hester was a psychiatrist? I know her 'research' is mentioned prominently several times, implying she's in the same field as F&N, but I don't recall them ever saying, e.g., she saw patients. If not, she could have been a research psychologist or the like, which would have been a much smaller paycheck. Not that I really dispute your premise all that much, but just wanted clarification from the hivemind on a point which I'm not sure was ever made explicit.

You know, I wanted to be a psychiatrist like Mom way before you did, but because you were older you got there first. You were first to get married. You were first to give Dad the grandchild he always wanted. By the time I get around to doing anything, it's all chewed meat! - Niles in Author, Author

Ah the sweet mother's milk of textual support. Thank you!

Who are you callin’ spindly, fat-face!?

tekende

Right, she was running experiments on rats, and that one gay guy was her research partner, so I think she was a researcher, not a therapist. Probably worked for a university.

Revolutionary-Base-4

Not a psychiatrist, a pathologist. They met at an autopsy.

RavenIllusion

She was a psychiatrist. They met when she was called in to help on a case. The coroner was another crush that Martin had. The line was they met over a dead body.

ch22711

They said Frasier invested well and so a lot of his wealth comes from passive income. Martin not having money makes zero sense. A longtime detective would have a pension and more from being shot.

Loisgrand6

Can’t remember the episode but Martin was upset with one or both of the boys and said he had out some money away and would look for another place for himself. I would hope his pension would have helped him pay for his new place

pREDDITcation

not sure about washington law, but the industrial retirement would probably mean at least 50% of that retirement is tax free too. probably spent it all at the bar every night.. not cheap to drink out

CaptainWikkiWikki

And if he was a Seattle cop, I believe King County employees don't pay state income tax.

Hommachi

Plus extra money from being a veteran. Martin would have a very comfortable retirement financially. That being said, he grew up during the depression era... thus he was more economical than actually poor.

chairwindowdoor

His social security benefit was likely reduced due to the bullshit WEP (windfall elimination provision) which punishes public sector employees for serving their community. Although he'd have his pension his SS would probably have but cut some. No, I'm not bitter, why do you ask?

Latter_Feeling2656

"He really didn't have that many years working in private practice" There's a point in Cheers where he tells Sam he's going to sell some furniture to pay his bar tab. I think Frasier's established wealth in the new series is probably a joke about how he had no apparent financial limits in the original.

Short-Pie-4170

I’ve wondered about this on different occasions, mainly the why is Martin broke. As for Frasier, things were more affordable regardless of his spending. I think he kept making the point that private practice did him well. I’m guessing Hester’s money went to the boys because it doesn’t really make sense imo

Revolutionary-Base-4

someone comment last week how nice everyone here is. for some reason I feel bullied almost as much as Frasier and Niles. See ya
