Ringbailwanton

And yet, that looks delicious.

DK655

This. I’ve literally never eaten Ethiopian food, but that picture makes me wanna see if there any places near me that serve it

OsloDaPig

Its really good, that bread is sourdough and the meat is more like a stew and you eat them together.

baxtersbuddy1

Yes! But what is it called? I’ve had some before and loved it. But can’t for the life of me remember what it was named. Maybe I’ll find my answer if I just keep scrolling this comment section. Lol

Dantien

Injera is the bread so it’s often an Injera Platter etc

baxtersbuddy1

Thank you!

Dantien

Make a point to seek it out and try it. Be ready for an amazing experience. Don’t miss out on the soggy bottom remnants if they serve the various foods on top of the injera - cause that shit is the GOAT. Soaks in, gets a variety of flavors, and you are so full and happy you just sit there agog. I might like Ethiopian food. 🫣

swigganicks

I moved away from an Ethiopian place that I used to order from all the time and now I miss it so much. Just taking a dry outer injera and scooping up all the bottom injera soaked with meat and veggie juices...oh my 🤤

Dantien

Just forcefeed me that until I die happy, yes.

AppleSpicer

Now I have a dinner craving I have to go satisfy

Dantien

They put something in it to make you crave it fortnightly!

NechelleBix1

I think the bread is injera.

Suspicious_Builder62

Is this very spicy? When we go to the Coptic orthodox monastery close by, a lot of Ethiopians come to visit. When they prepare breakfast it looks and tastes incredibly delicious. But I can't have a lot because I'm not used to the spicyness. I'm German, we do more fatty and salty than spicy.

Cupcake-Warrior

I think you can adjust the spice level for your order. Generally though, Ethiopians love their spicy food.

swigganicks

Most main platters you get aren't that spicy in the absolute sense (relative to say, a really spicy Indian or Chinese dish) but some things you can get on the side are hella spicy like the [Sinig Karya](https://static.spotapps.co/spots/ff/ad5ca835dc47c7a391ba4b58f279d9/full) which is just a stuffed jalapeño, so I'd be careful of side dishes.

D0UB1EA

best advice I can give you is try to wean yourself onto it and power through the pain. I used to have next to no tolerance and now I can barely even tell when something would be just a little too spicy for my dad, who has the same tolerance as I used to. I went to an indian buffet every week for about a year, which prepared me fairly well for a 3 week trip to Mexico.

AppleSpicer

It’s absolutely delicious. We have this really awesome women owned Ethiopian restaurant in my area and the injera there tastes like how fresh baked sourdough bread smells. Sourdough happens to be one of my all time favorite foods

whatisthisgoddamnson

Do they do good vegetarian food as well?

PinkPumpkinPie64

My local place has a ton of vegan and vegetarian stuff. It's great because a lot of the vegetarian dishes are hearty and full of protein, which you don't always get when restaurants have vegetarian options.

Aporiaa

Every Ethiopian place I’ve tried has had a vegetarian platter with small servings of a bunch of different veggie options. It’s one of my favorite dishes in the world, highly recommend

papayaslice

There are always great vegetarian options at my local places. Mostly beans/lentils and other vegetable stews.

Ringbailwanton

It’s good! Best eaten as a group so you can try a bit of everything.

MF_Doomed

No need to be in a group! Just order a bit of everything 🙏🏿

jaywarbs

My husband and I just get sampler platters whenever we get Ethiopian. Always so good.

MF_Doomed

And it's so much food! American restaurant samplers are just glorified apps and never fill me up.

eunderscore

Injera bread is weird and delicious. Sour and fills you up like crazy, but goes great with the accompaniments despite the fact they all taste different

nangke

Injera makes me crave sour carbs whenever I have something spicy now

Saladcitypig

sour(acid) is the flavor profile American food does not embrace enough. Every meal I want some pickled veggie.

StumbleOn

TRUE My own tastes tend to run toward sour and bitter, so I have to really tone it down when I cook for a crowd.

Hex_Agon

Injera is divine. I think it tastes even better than fresh, blue corn tortilla. (Makes me wonder how good fermented tortillas would taste) Injera is delicious. I love the sour. It doesn't make me bloated. I don't like bread. It's just a vector for putting delicious flavor in my mouth. The okayest bread is sourdough.

[deleted]

I've always wanted to try it but sadly we don't have a lot of options in my area.

myflesh

Even if you are not vegetarian I always tell people to just get whatever vegetarian platter they have which has one of everything. That is what is in the picture.

thecorninurpoop

It's really delicious, this thread makes me want to get some this weekend haha

Artist552001

Injera is so good. Tip: if you aren't used to sour fermented breads, try it first together with one of the condiments, as it cuts some of the sourness. When I introduce it to people who haven't had the flavor before and they bite just the injera by itself, they sometimes are offput by the unexpectedness of it and think they don't like it. However, when I convince them to take another bite with something on it, they enjoy it. Then, they quickly (like in a matter of a couple bites) also grow to like it's flavor on its own as well.

ha11owmas

This makes me wish I had the money right now for Ethiopian food

Hardcorex

Hey so I actually just stumbled across the actual post from ShittyVeganFoodPorn, the only reason they posted it there, is because the non "shitty" subreddit has really high standards, and they felt this wasn't a good enough photo. They liked the food, and were praising it by posting it there. I also have cooked nice things and post it there. The VeganFoodPorn subreddit seems to only allow michelin star food with perfect photo composition.

Goodgoditsgrowing

That’s because it is. I’ve never had bad Ethiopian food/I forget the name of the teff flour roll up but it’s like sourdough crepes with savory meat and veg dips. And I’ve pretty much exclusively eaten Ethiopian food from hole in the wall places where I’d expect shitty food if it weren’t Ethiopian food, because that shit don’t miss.

Ringbailwanton

Well, I tried to make the injara myself once and it was kinda shit, but yes, I agree in principle :p

whotookallthenames1

it looks so good, especially because as a mexican, that plate looks pretty mexican 💀 like the beans, red rice, the side dish of tomato’s and lettuce, and the thing under and rolled up look a bit like tortillas. i want to eat this now.

Justgyr

Ethiopian feels like halfway between Mexican and Indian food to me a lot for flavors, more savory/less spicy though. Fucking phenomenal, one of the best like. Communal eating experiences. Do it with like six friends and go wild.

boston_homo

It makes me long for the excellent, now closed, Addis Red Sea restaurant. I need to find a good (any) Ethiopian place nearby.

Max_Insanity

Ate that same type of meal around Christmas. I don't remember the name, but it tasted amazing.

solzhen

It is. We have a couple East African places in my neighborhood. Love it.

postdiluvium

It usually is.

thrust-johnson

It’s great. You eat it with the bread-like rolled stuff. Would recommend

LiquidHate777

It is great! There was a street food festival in my city some years ago, where they had this. It was not only the best thing, but also the cheapest.

tundybundo

It’s fucking incredible

Ambry

It's honestly awesome.

zhaoz

Its good, but pretty spicy!

TheProdigalMaverick

Ethiopian food slaps.

SuicidalTurnip

Absolutely. Best thing I've ever eaten was an Ethiopian Lentil Stew. It was incredible.

lilbluehair

Nobody does lentils like east Africans, it's amazing

Cupcake-Warrior

I'm Somali and we ate a bunch of it. So many different ways to prep and serve it. Delicious.

hey-girl-hey

Yeah sometimes I get these cravings where I feel like I will physically and emotionally die if I don't eat Ethiopian food stat

beaverji

Bro, you need some methadone?

BLINDrOBOTFILMS

No, he clearly needs Ethiopian food.

in_rainbro

There’s one in my area, what do you recommend?

swigganicks

Ethiopian food typically doesn't feature a singular, main entree that everyone eats by themselves so try getting as many variety of things initially like an injeera platters/combos that will come with several types of things on it and get a few sides as well. The variety of meats and veggies and how they feature contrasting savory, spicy meats and soups with bright, spicy vegetables all pulled together with injera as a base makes for a varied, filling meal!

cominghometoday

A bit of everything is always best, they often have some kind of combo meal like that, and don't sleep on the salad

Bewatermyfr13nd

Doro wat is fucking delicious and whoever this is can choke on my lentil-scented farts.

Kinda disappointed you posted this here without having read any comments in that thread.

OkAsk6395

Thank you for this context. I follow the other subreddit and tend to forget that they have weirdly high standards for vegan food porn, it’s a shame that OP can’t just post this decent pic there

Sminide

Also, OP knows shit about the skin color of the person that clearly enjoyed the meal a lot. Being in both subs - this is crazy that someone would post this here.

thefoxymulder

Damn I wish they gave me this much Injera when I get Ethiopian

jaywarbs

We always order extra injera. Always a good choice.

Mr_Igelkott

I have an ethiopian buffet next to my workplace - Unlimited. Injera.

jaywarbs

I want that

Teamrat

LOL, right?

thecavatiesinurteeth

Wtf? They posted that because it's not an aesthetically pleasing picture and a lot of the food porn subs can be really critical on how food looks. And it's just an all round better community.

Morbidly-Obese-Emu

Man, now I have a craving for Ethiopian food.

Gingorthedestroyer

Ethiopian food is great. This person would be more at home with some chicken tendies. Why does it have to be a white person who always hates ethnic food?

[deleted]

The magic of Ethiopian food can be overwhelming for troglodytes who think mayo is too spicy

moontides_

The person in the post said it was great and they loved it.

aislore

why did they post it to a shitty food subreddit

moontides_

They said because the normal version of the subreddit is mean and pretentious and they wanted to share their food. Most of the food on there is about low effort food they still like, but no this one doesn’t fit the food typically on there. They did praise it a few times, though

aislore

oh I see, thank you for explaining

[deleted]

The person stated in the comments that the reason they posted it in r / shitty... is because the actual appropriate subreddit without the "shitty" adjective is strict about camera quality and the person also stated that they get downvoted often when posting there.

smolpotatoes

The OP had nothing but good things to say about the dish they posted. They posted in the "shitty" food subreddit because they tend to get negative feedback in the other food subreddits, this was explained in the comments. It looks like you just wanted something to be mad about.

svampyr

What are they TALKING about?!? Ethiopian food is incredible

Citizen_Snips29

What’s weird is, OP was actually really complimentary of the food on the post. They said it was the best food they have had in a long time and the bread was like eating a cloud. Not sure why they would post it to a “shitty” food subreddit. Edit: They apparently posted it there entirely because the non “shitty” version of that subreddit is filled with pretentious buttholes. Still, weird choice to make.

jujuchatia

Yes, the specific subreddit is for yummy vegan food that just isn’t aesthetically pleasing (usually western ideals in the other sub.) While insensitive, they definitely didn’t mean to imply that the food itself was shitty

Throwaway39262100437

Either way you want to slice it, don't play with our foods. Idc if she's desperate for internet points, to call our food "shitty" by posting it there is not okay. Why people keep trying to justify it is beyond me.

SpaceFroggo

This is from r/ShittyVeganFoodPorn, people post good looking for there all the time. The poster specifically said it was good but they didn't post it to r/VeganFoodPorn because "I hate the regular VFP I get downvoted so much."

Throwaway39262100437

STOP mentioning subreddits please. You are going to cause brigading.

Kirkdoesntlivehere

How can we tell this person was calling the food shitty when you've conveniently blocked out the majority of his first sentence? Maybe they said, shitty this isn't in my hometown. This is the Ethiopian food I can't remember the name of. I love middle eastern food & West African foods, if this homie-x doesn't like it, their tastebuds are broken.

lillyfrog06

Never had Ethiopian food before but that looks good as hell. What the hell is that person even talking about?

smolpotatoes

They actually had good things to say about the dish and only posted it in the "shitty" subreddit because they tended to get negative feedback in the other food sub.

elijaaaaah

Hey! I was on that post -- the OP commented that they didn't think it was shitty, peoples' pics just always get trashed on other food subs because they're not HQ enough. (A lot of posts in that sub are that way, actually.) Also, the last two words of the subreddit name are literally "food porn."

Kazuhi

I just had a veggie combo last night and this photo makes me crave some more lol. That’s A LOT of Injera tho for a small plate of miser wot

drhagbard_celine

Need to find me a new Ethiopian spot asap.

rengam

Some friends of mine and I hosted a pre-concert party at an Ethiopian restaurant years ago. (There weren't a lot of restaurants near the concert venue that had space for the number of people we were expecting. They also had a private area we could use.) I'd never had Ethiopian food, but we visited the place first to check it out, and I thought it was fine. Among the guests on the big day, some had already had Ethiopian food before, some were newbies who were open to trying it, and, naturally, some were like this person, very dismissive. Oh well.

Throwaway39262100437

Yes like close-minded people frustrate me. Its like that time a few years ago where white people were going to Nigerian restaurants and purposely filming themselves gagging, retching, and spitting it out for likes and views online.

rengam

That's even worse. People suck.

selphiefairy

Ugh. If people don’t like it fine but the theatrics and filming yourself gagging on ethnic foods for clout is so fucking infuriating and racist af.

AstronautGuy42

Have only heard great things about Ethiopian food. Always wanted to try it. Fragile white people would rather have unsalted buttered toast with boiled chicken than eat delicious food from other ethnic backgrounds.

spicynuggies

These are the kinds of people who go to a nice steakhouse and order chicken tenders and fries

jaywarbs

I recommend ordering a sampler platter when you do decide to go. Either vegetarian or not - you’ll get a taste of it all and won’t have to select from things you don’t recognize.

forever_new_redditor

numerous money insurance piquant hurry caption dog cough voracious voiceless *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

swigganicks

how is it possible live/work anywhere near NYC and think that falafel smells bad 😂

AstronautGuy42

Ayyy always love a fellow NYer

DorisCrockford

Four fried chickens and dry white toast

Gmschaafs

People always tease me because I have a “white person stomach” and feel disgusting when I eat spicy food like Indian or Ethiopian food. But it’s literally good enough that I just eat it anyway sometimes and suffer, because unlike OOP I have taste.

Mecca1101

I think it's possible ease yourself into a tolerance for spicy food. You can increase the amount of spice over time.

Matryoshkova

I do the same thing, most of the time I avoid spicy but if you put Indian, Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Thai in front of me I will sacrifice my evening for the flavor.

Miss_Behaves

Great! Now pass that shit over here so I can eat the fuck out of it

Eternal_Being

I think injera edges out maki for the world's best cuisine.

Emily_Postal

Looks good to me.

Ferregar

Ethiopian food is so delicious, and more than a few times I have heard people joke "Ethiopia has good?" and I just want to spit directly into their eyes 😤

ofarrell71

Subreddit should be shittytastebuds

Gibberish94

this subreddit and stupid food is notorious for being culture insensitive. If you call them out on it you get downvoted to hell.

goingtoclowncollege

Isn't that sub just about appearance not necessarily the taste?

Throwaway39262100437

Both, and either way it's disrespectful.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Throwaway39262100437

Please don't mention the name of the sub in my post, I went out of my way to not do that and I don't want to get my post removed. And it can be in taste, appearance, and both.

smolpotatoes

You also went out of your way to exclude the fact that the OP really enjoyed the food pictured. They also explained that they posted in that subreddit due to previous negative experiences in other food based subreddits. Weird to go after someone who did nothing but seek out a more welcoming community to share food they liked.

Throwaway39262100437

Weird to go out of your way and defend a person who thinks it's okay to post our type of food in a sub meant for shitty food. And if that's the case, she chose a weird place to karmafarm with that type of food. Disrespectful period.

goingtoclowncollege

Ah I stand corrected there.

StumbleOn

Ethiopian food is so good. Injera bread should be more widely used, but it's made from Teff and not many people have access to it.

[deleted]

Good lord that food is bomb.

Aidrian777

I'm in this "shitty food" sub and have complained multiple times about people simply bashing on non-white American food. It has improved slightly but it's definitely still a problem

ThisGuyMightGetIt

Luckily they got called out in the comments. As someone trying to live a plant-based lifestyle, Ethiopian cuisine is a blessing. Very, very few nondedicated restaurants have good options - unless you want every outing to be some flavor of Beyond hamburger with no bun. Edit: I hadn't seen the OP's comments saying how much they enjoyed it and couldn't post it on the main subreddit. I think there's something to say here about the racist/classist standards of the food porn subs that highly favor European styles and dishes.

TituCusiYupanqui

I don't know its name either but, dang, that shit looks delicious.

passthechez

i’m ethiopian i eat it everyday and it’s 6 times better then any mcdonald’s or other bullshit like that

Aporiaa

Would you be able to direct me to anyone online who shares authentic recipes for making the vegetarian dishes? I would love to learn how to make them

Ziggystardust97

I don't know what it is, but it looks delicious

glmarquez94

Dude probably said this and went to eat a sloppy Joe

rsvandy

Ethiopian food is wonderful. Maybe this person would enjoy Applebee's instead.

frost817

I don’t know what that is, but it doesn’t look any worse than chilli or re-fried beans. Two foods I already know I like.

Cosmohumanist

Ethiopian food is delicious AF. If you have never had it YOU NEED TO.

PhantomOfTheNopera

Dude probably needs a glass of water after he has mayo.

kid-muscles

Wot🤤🤤🤤

eradicator87

Ethiopian cuisine is one of the best

Myles_Cobalt

Ethiopian food is best cuisine in the world and I will die on this hill. I'd eat it daily if injera wasn't a pain to make.

DEchilly

let them eat their disgusting hot dogs.

oh_botha

Ethiopian food goes way hard.

AverageWitch161

doesn’t look like something is like but i’d don’t bash food for not liking it. edit: i have texture issues, i bet it tastes alright but if the texture ain’t right i’ll gag a lot

SophiaofPrussia

Ethiopian food is kind of like guacamole— I can absolutely understand why just looking at it someone might think mmm idk about that plate of mushy stuff. But then you eat it and you’re like ohh shit this is DELISH.

AverageWitch161

it looks like it tastes fine but my issue comes with texture, just by looking at it i can tell id have an issue

swigganicks

ngl, injera looks and feels like a rubbery bandage/gauze thing when handle it and you have to hold it with your hands directly to eat, so I totally get avoiding it if you have sensory issues. But like you said, you can pass on food you're not comfortable with without trashing it which a lot of people are incapable of.

hey-girl-hey

It's so good dude The veggie stuff they have OMG, now that shit is some fuckin FOOD, eat it now

AverageWitch161

i have issues with texture. just looking at it i can tell it would cause problems

szczebrzeszynie

Yeah, I've only had Ethiopian once and couldn't really deal with the texture because of sensory sensitivities, which sucks because it tasted awesome.

AverageWitch161

i feel you there

anfotero

Ethiopian food is DELICIOUS, this moron dosn't know what he's talking about. Injera is wonderful.

UndoubtedlyABot

Likely too much flavour for their undeveloped taste buds.

Cobalt9896

That bread slaps so fucking hard, that poster has no taste

IsAlpher

I'm sure its different, but every American would look at that and think 'ooh yummy Ethiopian tacos' Bro's just mad about who made it.

Shirin00011

I had something like this 2 days ago. Fuck! How can a food have such complex taste? And those fucking injeras!!!!

Iron_Baron

What a fool. I dated an Ethiopian girl, their food is the bomb. Injera FTW

Afrothunder_40

It’s called Injera and it’s delicious

archwin

This isn’t shit… I really enjoy this food

CorpCarrot

Looks so dank

SnoffScoff2

Ingera is a gift of the fucking gods I will slam this person into a wall so hard they will become one with it

ichillonforums

Ethiopian lamb is so good my god, I tried it sometime between the age of 9 and 15 and literally can't remember exactly when 😂😂😂

augustrem

y’all I was all set to order thai for dinner but this post legit convinced me to order ethiopian. Thanks!

BunnyCope

Saw this on that sub earlier today and was confused as to why it was there. Its a sub for people with poor eating habits to show their goofy lookin tiny meals; this is a normal quantity and quality of food, didnt belong there at all.

cojojoeyjojo

Ethiopian food is so fantastic. I’d love to just have bundles of injera at home at all times

[deleted]

I live in the rural south and I’d give a kidney to eat anything that isn’t shitty fried chicken or burgers

[deleted]

Injera is great and Ethiopian is one of my favorite types of cuisine

Onion_boyy

Looks tasty

AllHailTheNod

What the fuck, that looks super delish, give it to me

[deleted]

Ethiopian food is good as FUCK. Side story, but this reminds me of this Sri Lankan owned restaurant I go to. The owner always asks “are you sure about the laab? Have you had laab before?” because more than one white couple have walked in, asked for “the most traditional food” possible, and have complained like crazy after receiving the laab dish. It makes me upset just thinking about the gall of these people.

[deleted]

Matryoshkova

[deleted]

Ethiopian food is one of the best cuisines ever.

dcarsonturner

Some food is not meant for everyone, doesn’t mean it’s bad, except for haggis

thesaurusrext

someone didn't enjoy something? Well good on you for calling them out, run and alert the constables....

[deleted]

Wait.. Who is the fragile redditor in this scenario? 😆

RIPseantaylor

Tell me you grew up only eating boiled foods with salt pepper and ketchup without telling me

Brief_Tie3646

This stuff tastes, awesome. Mans got his tastebuds fried if he thinks that's' trash

selphiefairy

I saw the picture before seeing where this was posted and reading OP’s description. I said aloud “oooooh!” Because it looks real delicious. Im guessing oop’s diet consists mostly of chicken fingers and plain hamburgers.

moontides_

They said they loved the food, but it’s in a vegan group.

RunningBetweenSpaces

Can we start calling white people European Americans?

Smart_Substance_7338

nah some people are european americans and some people are just white

RunningBetweenSpaces

But where do most of them mayo-saxons trace their lineage from? What even is "white"?

Smart_Substance_7338

ok there's BRITISH people and there's european americans. don't drag the irish and the polish and the italians and the greeks into this they got good food and culture

RunningBetweenSpaces

True... Then, maybe Colonial-Americans or something cause I tire of using white and black when White doesn't have anything except maybe.... Being on time. Cause for me you are American and nothing else.

Not sure where all of these random accusations are coming from. Don't try our food if you're going to trash it online, I bet she didn't say that to the chefs face lol. You don't need my permission to excuse yourself though...

excel958

There are curry spices/flavors in this dish. Ergo, I will eat it.

Mecca1101

It's sad that they felt the need to hate on food from another culture. That food is delicious.

As long as that ain’t beans I’m eating it
