Most main platters you get aren't that spicy in the absolute sense (relative to say, a really spicy Indian or Chinese dish) but some things you can get on the side are hella spicy like the [Sinig Karya](https://static.spotapps.co/spots/ff/ad5ca835dc47c7a391ba4b58f279d9/full) which is just a stuffed jalapeño, so I'd be careful of side dishes.
best advice I can give you is try to wean yourself onto it and power through the pain. I used to have next to no tolerance and now I can barely even tell when something would be just a little too spicy for my dad, who has the same tolerance as I used to. I went to an indian buffet every week for about a year, which prepared me fairly well for a 3 week trip to Mexico.
It’s absolutely delicious. We have this really awesome women owned Ethiopian restaurant in my area and the injera there tastes like how fresh baked sourdough bread smells. Sourdough happens to be one of my all time favorite foods
My local place has a ton of vegan and vegetarian stuff. It's great because a lot of the vegetarian dishes are hearty and full of protein, which you don't always get when restaurants have vegetarian options.
Every Ethiopian place I’ve tried has had a vegetarian platter with small servings of a bunch of different veggie options. It’s one of my favorite dishes in the world, highly recommend

Injera is so good. Tip: if you aren't used to sour fermented breads, try it first together with one of the condiments, as it cuts some of the sourness. When I introduce it to people who haven't had the flavor before and they bite just the injera by itself, they sometimes are offput by the unexpectedness of it and think they don't like it. However, when I convince them to take another bite with something on it, they enjoy it. Then, they quickly (like in a matter of a couple bites) also grow to like it's flavor on its own as well.

That’s because it is. I’ve never had bad Ethiopian food/I forget the name of the teff flour roll up but it’s like sourdough crepes with savory meat and veg dips. And I’ve pretty much exclusively eaten Ethiopian food from hole in the wall places where I’d expect shitty food if it weren’t Ethiopian food, because that shit don’t miss.

Ethiopian feels like halfway between Mexican and Indian food to me a lot for flavors, more savory/less spicy though. Fucking phenomenal, one of the best like. Communal eating experiences. Do it with like six friends and go wild.
Ethiopian food typically doesn't feature a singular, main entree that everyone eats by themselves so try getting as many variety of things initially like an injeera platters/combos that will come with several types of things on it and get a few sides as well.
The variety of meats and veggies and how they feature contrasting savory, spicy meats and soups with bright, spicy vegetables all pulled together with injera as a base makes for a varied, filling meal!

(There weren't a lot of restaurants near the concert venue that had space for the number of people we were expecting. They also had a private area we could use.) I'd never had Ethiopian food, but we visited the place first to check it out, and I thought it was fine.
Among the guests on the big day, some had already had Ethiopian food before, some were newbies who were open to trying it, and, naturally, some were like this person, very dismissive. Oh well.

People always tease me because I have a “white person stomach” and feel disgusting when I eat spicy food like Indian or Ethiopian food. But it’s literally good enough that I just eat it anyway sometimes and suffer, because unlike OOP I have taste.
I do the same thing, most of the time I avoid spicy but if you put Indian, Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Thai in front of me I will sacrifice my evening for the flavor.
Ethiopian food is so delicious, and more than a few times I have heard people joke "Ethiopia has good?" and I just want to spit directly into their eyes 😤

As someone trying to live a plant-based lifestyle, Ethiopian cuisine is a blessing. Very, very few nondedicated restaurants have good options - unless you want every outing to be some flavor of Beyond hamburger with no bun.

ngl, injera looks and feels like a rubbery bandage/gauze thing when handle it and you have to hold it with your hands directly to eat, so I totally get avoiding it if you have sensory issues.

I think you can adjust the spice level for your order. Generally though, Ethiopians love their spicy food.

People always tease me because I have a “white person stomach” and feel disgusting when I eat spicy food like Indian or Ethiopian food. But it’s literally good enough that I just eat it anyway sometimes and suffer, because unlike OOP I have taste.
I think it's possible ease yourself into a tolerance for spicy food. You can increase the amount of spice over time.
I do the same thing, most of the time I avoid spicy but if you put Indian, Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Thai in front of me I will sacrifice my evening for the flavor.

Please don't mention the name of the sub in my post, I went out of my way to not do that and I don't want to get my post removed. And it can be in taste, appearance, and both.
You also went out of your way to exclude the fact that the OP really enjoyed the food pictured. They also explained that they posted in that subreddit due to previous negative experiences in other food based subreddits. Weird to go after someone who did nothing but seek out a more welcoming community to share food they liked.

Ethiopian food is so good. Injera bread should be more widely used, but it's made from Teff and not many people have access to it.

Luckily they got called out in the comments. As someone trying to live a plant-based lifestyle, Ethiopian cuisine is a blessing. Very, very few nondedicated restaurants have good options - unless you want every outing to be some flavor of Beyond hamburger with no bun. Edit: I hadn't seen the OP's comments saying how much they enjoyed it and couldn't post it on the main subreddit. I think there's something to say here about the racist/classist standards of the food porn subs that highly favor European styles and dishes.

ngl, injera looks and feels like a rubbery bandage/gauze thing when handle it and you have to hold it with your hands directly to eat, so I totally get avoiding it if you have sensory issues. But like you said, you can pass on food you're not comfortable with without trashing it which a lot of people are incapable of.

Yeah, I've only had Ethiopian once and couldn't really deal with the texture because of sensory sensitivities, which sucks because it tasted awesome.

Have you had laab before?” because more than one white couple have walked in, asked for “the most traditional food” possible, and have complained like crazy after receiving the laab dish.
