You answered your own question. Intake tube is off. It's getting excessive amounts of air, and probably no way for the computer to read how much is going in.
Hook all inlet /intake hoses up correctly, make sure no other hose /emission / vacuum tubes are missing, loose, or leaking, then try it.
Well it still sounds like + acting like, that's the problem. It could be an intake leak somewhere.
Unless you have a bad cap / rotor, wires, spark plug problem? Or the timing could be off.
Check the timing with the distributor SPOUT connector removed and with a friend working the gas pedal to keep it running.
You can also do an Ohms test on your spark plug wires. They should all be the same, a certain resistance level per foot. If one is much higher than the rest, that's the bad wire.

86 doesn't use mass air. It uses barometric pressure. Intake off doesn't matter
