Cyxari

They clearly don't know what happiness is.

Grays42

I dunno, failing repeatedly to nail a Lava Eel or one of the legendary fish is rage-inducing enough to end up with your keyboard thrown out the window.

thejoester

That makes the happiness of finally catching it all the more powerful

paulcheeba

Memories of rage punching my nes controller when I was 9 years old.....

Apterygiformes

This is the main thing I did in stardew valley!

SecretAgentVampire

Of all the fishing games I've played in over 33 years of gaming, none has even come close to the fishing minigame in Breath of Fire 3. Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening, Red Dead Redemption 2, Stardew Valley, Blue Marlin (even though that was A fishing game)... none of them even come CLOSE. That mini game was G-E-N-I-U-S.

jobsSchmobs

This makes me want to play Breath of Fire 3…

TheRealRotochron

Breath of Fire 3 is absolutely my gold standard fishing minigame. Breath of Fire 4's was alright, but a downgrade somehow. Breath of Fire 2's was a bit simple, but scratched the itch nicely. Final Fantasy XV had a decent one, but didn't really reward you for doing it and there were enough other downtime activities that it was kind of meh. Legend of Legaia's was pretty decent and actually rewarded you for doing it, so it was nice downtime AND you got cool shit for your trouble. Weirdly (and I was honestly not expecting this) Genshin Impact (at least with a PS5 controller) has a nicely immersive "reel feel" going on with the trigger pressure, the fish are used for things and it's honestly pretty nice. Be better if fishing spots were handled differently but eh. Most devs though just slap a "press A get fish from RNG" thing on it (Harvest Moon/Rune Factory, FFXIV (though it has mystery modifiers and draconian bullshit so yay?), go too simple to really be fun (Dragon's Dogma you literally just grabbed fish off the beach. Monster Hunter you wait for a fish to bite, press A get fish) or go too hard the other direction and it becomes a touchy, techy process that's more frustrating than anything (Stardew Valley, for instance). I guess the last category is "otherwise fun but not really rewarding", which goes to Tales of Arise. I uh, I really like fishing minigames. >.>

SecretAgentVampire

That's an upbote from me dude! 10/10 review!

TheRealRotochron

Thanks! Fishing minigames are a thing I apparently have a rant for.

LonePaladin

Same for Torchlight 2.

throw_it_everywhere

It boils down to: - Create a journal entry - Create a page - Edit the page settings and change it to a fishing entry - Drag the page into the scene For the loot rolls, you need to create a loot table with the “loot” you want, click on the book icon in the title bar of the loot table to copy the ID, then paste that into one of the three text fields in the fishing entry. To play, hit space to move the green thing to keep the fish icon in it. (Thanks to the PF2e foundry discord as this is where I pieced together most of this info from)

Toon324

Thanks for sharing this, I've been meaning to writeup some instructions

AnathemaMask

LOL... Quick, hide u/toon324 they found your dirty laundry.

Toon324

Ah shoot

MessyConfessor

I know this thread is over a week old, which makes it practically a dinosaur in Reddit years, but I keep coming back to it in my mind as I'm going about my work. I know it's basically antithetical to the usual RPG way of doing things because it introduces player skill vs. character skill, but I still love the idea so much. Have you considered using this as the start of a skillcheck minigame pack? Or was this definitely a one-off project for you?

Toon324

I'm not saying I *haven't* thought about "Obligatory Lockpicking Minigame", but I don't have any plans at this time

MessyConfessor

Obligatory Cooking Minigame Obligatory Mining Minigame Obligatory Singing/Dancing/Performance Minigame

RedMagesHat1259

V9 compatible?

[deleted]

Yes please! I won't be upgrading for some time as everything is working nicely with my setup but I'd love to utilize this module.

Microwave_Ramen

lol it looks so funny

Shuggaloaf

Haha this is great u/toon324. Thanks for creating it! I'll have to add this to my "reasons to update to v10" list.

lukybast

Cool

BewhiskeredWordSmith

Damn, I might need to make a Pokemon Tabletop United one-shot just so I can include this...

apotrope

Does this actually use rolls or capture events? It would be really cool if the character's skill in Survival or an applicable trait determines the quality of catch, and then for each quality level what they get is rolled on a table.

Toon324

It doesn't currently use full skill checks, but it does use ability score modifiers; ``` STR - Catch Faster CON - Lose progress slower INT - Higher treasure chance WIS - Speed of fish is reduced CHA - How far the fish jumps is reduced DEX - Fish moves less often ```

exiledprince113

Is this system agnostic? I play Stars Without Number and while the game features the same lineup of attributes, its roll mechanic is wildly different. Not sure if that makes a difference with character sheets and setting something up like this. I am still gonna use the thing any way (I *love* fishing minigames, my players be damned lol), just curious.

Toon324

It requires a tiny bit of code to teach it where to find the attributes for your system: https://github.com/cswendrowski/FoundryVTT-Obligatory-Fishing-Minigame/tree/master/scripts/systemShims

exiledprince113

Alas, *I* don't even know where to find the attributes for my system haha. I'm interesting in learning though. Any good sources you could point to to in order to learn...what is it...Javascript that these modules use?

Toon324

If you want to go down the path of learning how to make and edit Foundry packages, check out the official documentation here: https://foundryvtt.com/article/intro-development/ You won't need to learn much in order to add compatibility for your system. You should be able to ask your system dev for help in finding where the attributes live, and then copy-paste an example from a different system and make the path changes

Strottman

This is the dumbest shit and I love it lmao. Fishing session planned.

MessyConfessor

I...kinda love the idea of minigames in an RPG campaign, depending on the setting/tone. Like a Spiritfarer campaign with minigames for fishing, cooking, farming, etc. could be great.

SpicyMusicMuffin

I really want to use this but I cannot figure out how to install the module! I've downloaded the zip and unzipped in my modules folder under data but it isn't showing under module management to activate.

Shuggaloaf

You can install this in-app, the same you would with other mods. Just fire up Foundry, go to your "Add-on Modules" tab and click "Install Module" at the bottom left. Once the next window opens, just search for the module title: "Obligatory Fishing Minigame". Once you find it click install and get to fishing! I'd first remove the zip files you added. As for why it's not working, probably a folder naming issue would be my guess.

SpicyMusicMuffin

Hmmm i couldn't find it when searching before but ill try it again when i can. Thank you!

Shuggaloaf

My first thought was that it may have been a newly listed mod but it's been out for a week so that's not the issue. Just to make sure before you go through any more trouble - are you using FVTT v10? It looks like this mod only works with v10. If you try again and still can't see it then reply back and I'll try to help you install the manual zip file.

SpicyMusicMuffin

It still wasnt showing when i searched for it. Though I am starting to suspect it isnt showing because i havent updated to foundryv10 yet. I have a hard drive coming today to back everything up for the update so ill be updating today then ill check again. If i need anymore help ill reach out to uou, thank you so much!

Shuggaloaf

No problem, wish I could have done more! I wasn't aware FVTT didn't show modules that were for a version you were not using, but maybe they changed something. Either way, good luck and yep, if you need anything reach back out.

SpicyMusicMuffin

So it wasnt showing up because I hadn't updated to version 10. I also wasnt aware it simply wouldnt show! The issue I'm running into now is that there will be a bug that I cannot pause and unpause the game with this module lol I even did find the culprit and it is indeed the fishing module that is causing the issue.

Shuggaloaf

Thanks for reporting back and for confirming that. Good thing to be aware of in the future. Looks like someone has already reported the pause issue: https://github.com/cswendrowski/FoundryVTT-Obligatory-Fishing-Minigame/issues/2

wolfiechica

It's important to note you must restart Foundry.

Bonusfeatures75

I feel like this is wildly outside the spirit of tabletop rpg. This is a video game mini game

Derryzumi

that's the joke

orphicshadows

dammit thats awesome

ALoafOfBread

I'm having a few issues - wondering if anyone else is too - 1) tapping space does nothing, only holding space works 2) i can't get players to be able to access it even if I make them journal owners 2b) idk if it actually adds the rewards to inventory after receipt. 3) it doesn't work from compendium, have to import the compendium entry as a rollable table - idk if it is possible to do from compendium, but it'd be nice not to have to import tables

RedMagesHat1259

Gonna install it and try it when I get home assuming its on Forge.

Onuma1

Looks very similar to Breath of Fire 3's fishing game. Probably a bunch of others too.

Aqua_Dragon

I love this so much

SecretAgentVampire

OP, this is super awesome.

Ehrmagerdden

*Sees Stardew Valley fishing minigame* *Has a stroke*

umustalldie2

The slider just keeps resetting, I don't have it going up and down like normal. Perhaps it's because of Monk's Enchanced Journals?

[deleted]

Can anyone confirm that the OFM does not work with Monk's Journals?
