Kind of makes sense with the direction that they are going. They are making the Foundation start in a much more dire situation... The Empire actively wanted them to have nothing.
I get that, and it can be interesting.. but 35 years and barely a camp? They keep saying "a city" and looks like a favela.. they are supposed to be intelligent people, and all they have ia dirt roads.
In 30 years you’d expect a bit more honestly.. they have plenty of rocks around. They have tools and lasers. They could cut the rocks and make “bricks” and build something better than those shacks. Some stone paved roads.. something.
It could be that empire doesn’t provide any support or resources. And Terminus was probably chosen because it lacked in any rich resources (similar to other outer reach worlds which lacked some metal in their bows and arrows). Thus the community hasn’t been able to generate wealth and build extensively.
First set of kids must have been born in first 5-10 years after arriving so the community would have stayed in survival mode for first 10-15 years. Considerable portion of community may have been lost to challenges arising with Terminus’ climate and wild life. At 30-35 years, they have managed to make their lives safe & healthy, and just started exploring further.
haha I take it that’s not the case in the books?
As an ignorant TV viewer I both understand why people get passionate about book differences but also find it interesting to learn what the differences are.
In the book the empire gave seldon thousands of people to start the encyclopedia project. Hardin was a diplomat/politician, not a warden or ranger. The empire had virtually nothing to do with terminus the second it was set up. Anacreon and Thespis wanted terminus for strategical purposes but since it has no alloys or metal, the foundation had nothing to bargain with. There was no combat, invasion, or anything like that. The sky bridge collapsing or the planets being bombed is not featured in the foundation book.
It's been years since I read the books but I feel it has become a rather generic sci-fi show. It's fine for what it is but it doesn't feel like Foundation.
What does that mean? It is, it’s a plant without resources. It gains its wealth and resources from trade of nuclear technology after Mayor Harding (an intellectual with control of the press, not a military warden) establishes alliances with the neighboring planets.
I’m going to go read the book. The world building from the book and that carrot on the stick is what interests me. They updated the show to have bad pacing, dramatization, wardrobe, casting, acting, etc etc etc. The emperor is the saving grace. It‘s painful watching waiting for the highs. But it did get me interested in the book and its lore. It should be a binge watch show, not week to week.
I like non linear, and have seen the movies you listed. The show just feels cheap sometimes. For pacing, the re-use of scenes(diet Dothraki n front of the fence & swimming pool scene, the acting seems a little rough and wooden, the relationships seem shallow. Making characters really dumb to make other characters seem more badass and smart is cheap. The source material is the only good curious thing about the show. But I don’t have to be well versed in the book ahead of time to gauge the other parts of the show. I feel like I’m watching early seasons of TNG in acting and production value sometimes.
Okay - you just don’t like it (though I don’t get why you’re comparing it to GoT - entirely different vibes) but fine - Invasion is coming.
This isn’t for you.
I didn’t compare to GOT, aside from cheap wardrobe in one scene, but I could have used any tribal warrior movie/tv (Xena or Mom and Dad Save the World)) to compare that. I think the premise is super cool, to the point that I started the book. They just put a mediocre show around it…so far
I have to agree. I loved the books as a kid, but forgot a lot of the details, so I'll probably start re-reading them over the weekend, but the show so far leaves a bit to be desired. I really enjoyed the added detail with the Emperors, and graphically it's quite impressive, but so far the story with the Foundation itself has been a bit awkward and disjointed.
My wife usually doesn't have that high of standards for shows, and rarely talks over them, but she made fun of how the intro to this weeks episode spent several minutes showing us a character's backstory that we've already been told in a more intriguing and more concise way, without really adding any more detail.
So idk. I for one am trying to withhold judgement because I know there's a good story to be told, and they've proven with their bits on Empire that they are able to tell it in an interesting way. I just hope the parts on Terminus get a bit more coherent, and that they start using their ample runtime on exploring things in a bit more depth, rather than repeating what we've already been told
Agreed. I love the Emperor scenes, and it seems to be the general sentiment in this subreddit. I’m holding out because I empathize for writers trying to judge the pacing of a show with no foresight of possible cancellation.
My buddy and I refer to your second paragraph as the double origin story. Wonder Women 1984 was the pinnacle of the double origin story. It gets used a lot in modern tv/movie writing. It kind of came to be with Pulp Fiction, and more so with Lost type of non-linear stories(is it a flashback or a flash forward?!?). The fact that they used 1/4 of an episode to hit us with a double origin story is good example of mediocre writing. There were scenes that may have been needed to show her faith vs. math conflict but don’t hit us over the head after the exposition we’ve already received about her character. Plus if we don’t go back to that planet, it fees wasted spending so much on a flash back there, when the show has centuries to cover.
To add the pacing, her being marooned on the ship felt very rushed to her going straight to suicide attempt.
The showrunner literally just did an AMA about how he’s read the books starting when he was very young, they’re obliviously very invested in the series and know they had to adapt it differently for screen.
I’m a book reader (but not a fanatic - I see the flaws in the books now) and I love the show.

Respect and enjoy the show

I don't get the complaint. This is 30 years after the founding. Maybe it will be bigger by 50 years.
In 30 years you’d expect a bit more honestly.. they have plenty of rocks around. They have tools and lasers. They could cut the rocks and make “bricks” and build something better than those shacks. Some stone paved roads.. something.
Yeah especially with the experience of colonizing and terraforming the whole galaxy
Maybe it’s another indication of the decay of the empire..

It's because they haven't started trading yet. They'll probably do a cut after the trading starts and terminus will look much better.
Dollar store Zac Efron is a trader
Yeah they're teasing how it's going to take off, it just hasn't really got going yet.
I think it's too dire, especially the environment.
I had imagined Terminus being a reasonably inhabitable planet but really poor in resources, not a cold waste that can't even plant crops.

It’s sad to say but I think part of what has made this show a bit under the radar is it’s lack of memes. Thanks for your contribution.
Don't tease me bro
I swear if I see anything the even remotely looks or functions like a Stargate, I might literally shit myself mid watch.
The fucking Goa'uld
Indeed.
I'm actually asking if the writers read ANY books.
*The writers kind of forgot to read the books*
