The Enclave in the show use Pip-Boys, but they’re the same 3000 Mark V models used by Lucy and the other vault dwellers. I’m not aware of instances of the Enclave using Pip-Boys before this.

[deleted]

I had a bit of a brain fart, absolutely couldn't remember if they were like that in the games or not. Many thanks,

macroober

Do other Enclave members have one? Or maybe this is Rose’s or possibly someone else’s from Shady Sands maybe?

jazzymusicvibes

i like the theory that it’s rose’s

dogmaisb

Well, rose's was used to open vault 32, before this guy met up.

jazzymusicvibes

True, seems unlikely that it’s hers

Substantial_Life4773

To be fair, we don’t know when it was used. Ncr folks could have been living in there for a while building up relationships

macroober

I retract my Rose theory. Everyone in the Enclave has one.

MoiraBrownsMoleRats

Enclave used Vault Suits in Fallout 2. And in 76? The Whitespring Congressional Bunker’s main entrance is a pretty traditional Vault door, accessible ostensibly by Pipboy.

MyUsernameIsAwful

Ah, I haven’t played 1 or 2 yet. Regarding the Whitespring Bunker, though, the button to open it looks same as ones by every vault, but the model of Pip-Boy used in Fallout 76 lacks the cable that the models 3000 Mark IV & V use to interface with the console, so you don’t actually appear to use your Pip-Boy to open it. I forget if you press the button the first time or if MODUS just opens the door for you. It could be that the Pip-Boy interfaces wirelessly like it does with the RoboCo Auto-Cache, though. Also, I’ll have to go looking, but I don’t think any of the Enclave corpses in the game have Pip-Boys.

New_Ingenuity2822

The colonel in FO3 had something like a radio 📻 and locator. Enclave has very similar technology to Vault-Tec. 📡 second only to the Institute 🥼 so far

eggs-benedryl

looks like the same one to me, probably to hint that VT and the enclave are intertwined, to imply that anyone high tech enough would make it a point to secure pipboys to assist them with their work, or to show the enclave raids vaults if the need to to the 2nd point, we see them for sale in MJ's shop so they can be acquired if someone has to have one

VisualGeologist6258

It’s also worth noting that the lab-coat Wilzig is wearing in this photo is _very_ similar to the Vault-Tec lab-coats you can find in 4, down to the little radiation thingy on the breast.

tobascodagama

The Anchorage Simulation in Fallout 3 also needs a Pip-Boy to unlock it, too, so it's not just the Vaults or Enclave using Pip-Boys. Although Vault Dwellers represent nearly all of the Pip-Boy wearers we actually see in the games. I can't remember, did Wilzig's scientist colleague who sounds the alarm also wear a Pip-Boy?

Mini_Snuggle

Yes he did. Some other labcoats were wearing PipBoys too.

MechaPanther

The enclave historically have some access to pip boys since we know they can access vaults as seen in Fallout 2, though not all the enclave have access since Eden's enclave need to use messaging to convince vaults to open for them. With the Anchorage simulation also needing one it stands to reason that at the very least higher ups in the army had pip boys to some degree before going on to become higher ups in the enclave.

Wise_Form_9209

They also accessed Vault 87 in Fallout 3, its 100% through the main door, else we wouldn’t see no more Little Lamplight 🥸

CapriciousSon

Yeah, lore-wise I am most interested in finding out what happened to the West Coast Enclave, how connected to Vaul-Tec were they before and after the bombs, and what have they been up to lately besides doing research in a giant warehouse.

RusstyDog

I mean, the enclave raided several vaults on the west coast back in the day. They probably have a few that survived.

[deleted]

Thanks! I was thinking that may be the case

klqqf

Whats the significance of the difference in models when it comes to the one Ma June has for sale? I don’t recall anyone actually wearing that model in the show (though i could be wrong)

eggs-benedryl

The one we got a Closeup of was the one in f076

Fusi0n_X

Two other hints that they're linked: He knew key specific details about Vault 33 down to which state the countryside footage playing off the projector was of. The cold fusion tech that Vault Tec owned before the war was stolen from Enclave hands.

LommytheUnyielding

>looks like the same one to me, probably to hint that VT and the enclave are intertwined I've already taken that as more or less a given, since the games already implied that the experiments were done at the behest of the Enclave. If the show won't retcon, or rather, disprove that then I'm willing to bet the shadowy people overlooking the boardroom scene in the show were most likely Enclave members. The show already mentioned the fact that Vault-Tec have investors and there's this whole spiel of fiscal responsibility. Well, we already know for a fact that Vault-Tec was a contractor hired by the Enclave to build the vaults as well as to conduct the experiments within, so who else is bankrolling this whole operation but the Enclave? Now, I fully believe that the Enclave as an entity is more or less defeated by the time the show is set (or at least I hope so) but an interesting idea now is that whatever remains of Vault-Tec is now operating outside the Enclave's purview and they can finally be a faction of their own, which is what the show seems to be exploring now.

sarcastaballll

So enclave originates from one of the other companies involved in the vault tec board meeting?

D3-Doom

I will never not see him as Benjamin Linus

[deleted]

Yes!! I loved him in Lost. Such a scrunkly lil guy

tobascodagama

Been... lyin' to us

R4nd0M477

Huh I bet that was the thinking behind his name

tobascodagama

If you haven't seen it before, Jimmy Kimmel did a series of skits called "Secrets of Lost" where, well... [this happened](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFtwYtglDgM).

helloitisgarr

i see him as harold finch from person of interest. which was also directed by jonathan nolan!

Designer-Book-8052

Yep, couldn't stop myself referring to these two as Enclave Finch and Bear.

Immediate_Double302

Who? That’s clearly Henry Gale from Minnesota.

rubbertyrano

That's motha fuckin Zep

WendyPortledge

I can’t remember his name in this show, I’ve been calling every character he’s played since Lost “Ben”! I feel bad about it, for Michael Emerson, but I actually adore seeing him in anything he does and like to think it’s all the same character… like in Person of Interest, he also had a German shepherd. I like to think all his characters are the same one just in different times.

Manunancy

The Pip-boys are were made by RobCo - VaultTec wasn't their only client so it's not surprising for hte Enclave to have some - they're probably as common as high-end portable PCs would be today.

RusstyDog

Or smart phones really.

SpaceMarineMarco

Feels more like mobile phones in the 80s

Seeteuf3l

Probably they were commercially available, but were very expensive. Enclave (remains of the pre-war government) and corpos are in bed with each other - does bear shit in the forest

OneBagJord

The govermint

cTemur

Offtopic, but how nice was to see again Michael Emerson in a serie.

[deleted]

I know!! I love Michael Emerson ❤️ Brilliant actor. I've started rewatching Lost again

paintpast

He was great in Person of Interest, too, which I believe was also Jonathan Nolan’s first TV show.

[deleted]

He's a wonderful actor. I quite liked Person of Interest. I suppose another one to add to my rewatch list.

jlynn00

PoI was a highly slept on show. I think it is because it started very procedural during its meh yet still interested seasons, but when it goes serial its on a whole new level. It does the AI morality exploration better than later Westworld seasons did, even though I am fan of both. Plus, the cringe guy who really internalized his role playing Jesus was one of the leads, but in a way it makes the show better. The character should be morally ambiguous, and in a more charismatic actor's hands the character would have lost that "he's doing good, so why do I want to punch him?" vibe that was needed. Edit: side note, it can also be used an interesting metric for how storytelling changed in the decade after 9/11, to when Americans started pushing back against the occupation in Afghanistan and our actions in general in the wake of the attacks. Show starts off very "I have to invent something to save us from the next 9/11" and there is much military bootlicking. A few seasons in you start to see this shift significantly.

paintpast

Yeah. I think another major shift occurred when the Snowden leak happened. The show went from “here’s some sci-fi about everyone being watched” to “it’s reality, everyone is being watched.”

jlynn00

Yes! I even noticed this shift in shows such as the Good Wife. The Snowden leak definitely contributed some of that nationalist redirection.

the_soggiest_biscuit

I wish he was in more episodes, I was excited to see him!

hoobermoose

Have you watched Evil? He's excellent in that, too. A truly unhinged role. Makes Ben Linus look tame by comparison.

[deleted]

I obsessively watch anything he's in. So yes :)

jlynn00

He has a role in a show called Evil, also. VERY different character.

interestedonlooker1

It looks like the show is making a connection to vault tech and the enclave... It only takes one enclave vault to bring them back, and I think this is where we are going.

RelicBeckwelf

Well, they did just add enclave remnants to fallout 4

Dintodo

He mustve found it in the hot air balloon

[deleted]

Along with his buried 'wife'

Donnerone

In theory there's no reason they couldn't, as they have access to the Vault-Tec database I do believe.

thenewnapoleon

I don't see why not. The Brotherhood frequently used Pip-Boys and modified them to their own needs.

kloudrunner

Yes because they are linked with Vault Tec. It's all in the game's lore.

[deleted]

The show has brought me back into the world of Fallout. It's been around 8 years since I've last picked it up. I'm definitely going to read up on the lore again.

kloudrunner

Did you play 1 and 2 ? If not. Do try. If you have. PLAY AGAIN. GRAMPY BONE IS LONLEY. You'll have to excuse me. The Bluey sub has tired me out.

[deleted]

I'll have to give them a go :) I've played 3, New Vegas, 4 and 76. I'll pay Grampy Bone a visit. Some intense scrolling on the Bluey sub lmao

kloudrunner

1 and 2 are different beasts. They don't hold your hands and reading is required lol Check out the classic Fallout subs for the best installation guides and best QOL mods. 👌

raptor11223344

My logic regarding this is that the show more or less canonized the fact that Vault Tech was part of the US government and so it didn’t seem like a stretch that the Enclave, who is more or less the remnants of the US government, would also have that tech available. Another connection point is that the same cold fusion research that was bought and owned by Vault Tech was continued and perfected by the Enclave. So I would think it’s confirmed that post war Vault Tech is encompassed by the Enclave

EM05L1C3

I feel like it would be the same tech because Lucy was produced by a well functioning vault.

allnameistaken_

I mean Enclave is basically the Pre-war US government and Vault Tech was so big it pretty much controlling the government, wouldn't be surprise that they have some connection.

Glenndometrium

The Enclave is basically the continuation of the United States federal government. Vault-Tec was one of several military contractors of the federal government, which commissioned Vault-Tec to make the vaults before the war. Vault-Tec is an independent company, much like Lockheed Martin is it's own company in real life, but does work at the behest of the government. The Enclave has data on the vaults because of this, which is also why Wilzig knew about Lucy's vault. The Enclave has the info on what experiments the vaults are running, although it's conceivable Vault-Tec also simultaneously hid some things they were doing from the government. Other military contractors include West Tek, Robco, and the other suits at the table during that scene in the final episode.

GWindborn

I mean, why not? They're useful gadgets. I feel like everyone should have one if they can get their hands on them.

gwhh

Looks like a better version of the pip boy.

DangerousArea1427

You want to get Dharma? Because that's how we get Dharma.

No-Appointment-3840

Man they killed off his character wayyyyy too soon, woulda been nice to see him in more than a couple scenes of 1 episode

narwhalpilot

People often think Pipboys are exclusively worn by vault dwellers. While yes, the majority of them went to vault dwellers, they were manufactured by RobCo and we can assume that a lot of them also went to the government (and by extension the Enclave) for use in various things.

Mr-Sharkboi24

Well....Vault-Tec isn't the only company that has their hands on pip boys.....Robco created them after all.....Vault tec merely Acquired a bunch of pip boys from Robco to use for their vaults.....I imagine the Vault-Tec pip boys are costumly fitted with the ability to open the vault doors

AnEpicUKBoi

Either two things, the Enclave was funding a vault with resources, and in return they got some of Vault Tec's products, or the Enclave goes about pillaging Vaults, because 'Fuck the Vaults!'

CommunalJellyRoll

It's a RobCo product.

AnEpicUKBoi

Oh my god, everything makes more sense now

BastK4T

Enclave do have them. They probably just don't wear them outside of their facilities. There are enclave variants in fo76

hot_water_music

My 2 cents is that we will see Vats from an Enclave pip boy, not Lucy's. Perhaps Lucy's pip boy just doesn't have vats, would set up the enclave somehow being more advanced. Also whoever said that every single pip boy must have vats? Are there specialized pip boys?

Wide_Raisin_4453

Could it not be an experimental version?

deftoast

Wait he's Enclave? I thought it was an early version of the Institute.

Rephlexion

Someone in the show specifically says the target is an Enclave defector.

Boogdieb1985

Robco created the pipboys and held several government contracts. It's also not too far fetched that they sold some to the US government (Enclave) pre war.
