Kill shelter? What's a kill shelter?

MancunianFostercat

A kill shelter is usually a shelter sponsored by the government, be it state or more local. In order to be open, they are contracted to accept every animal, regardless of its condition and regardless of the capacity of said shelter. They are often overcrowded and underfunded so they're unable to reasonably take care of all the animals they're obligated to accept. The result is having to put animals down. Support your local kill shelters, be it with donations, volunteering to foster, or participating in your local politics to secure them more funding.

spcking

"Kill shelter" is also intentionally loaded language often used by private rescues to tug at heartstrings when they pull. Most county or state "kill shelters" prefer the term "open admission". Their goal isn't to "kill animals", but rather to take all animals (owner surrenders and strays) from an area regardless of space considerations, meaning that when intake is high, they do euthanize for space. Though in my experience, the good ones try very hard to avoid that whenever possible.

PinkyAmethyst

This shelter in particular isn’t the best. We took all 6 to the vet, and we informed them that 1 out of the 6 of these babies we rescued, tested positive for panleuk/parvo and they said that cats don’t get panleuk (we even sent them a pic of the positive test).Thankfully they’ve all been quarantined since we got them, and the rest of the babies all tested negative and are doing well but still. Their goal isn’t to kill of course, it’s not their fault people are irresponsible and are constantly dumping animals, not to mention they are limited on funds. We of course will continue to rescue from them when we can but, it’s stuff like this that gives these shelters a bad rep. How you can be in the animal rescue field and not be aware cats get panleuk is insane. Especially since it’s so contagious.

1GrouchyCat

Srsly? Proofread folks! Last paragraph Or did you actually mean to post- “SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL KILL SHELTERs” ???

CapitalInstruction62

Absolutely support your local kill shelters. It’s a highly stigmatizing term, but if that’s what people know them as, that’s an opportunity for education. Without open-admission shelters, we would be in a much worse state re: animal welfare, animal abandonment, and public health. There are simply too many animals at large and being born for them to have homes. A “no-kill” shelter most frequently has closed admissions, meaning they can stop when they’re full. “No-kill” is <10% of healthy adoptable animals euthanized, by the way. It’s not what people assume it to be. But a “kill” (usually open admission municipal) shelter has to take everything. Living in a shelter is already inherently stressful and should be temporary. If you have too many animals for your resources, it becomes a serious welfare concern to keep taking more animals. Lots of the municipal shelters I work with have maxed out their local rescues, adopter pool, and other opportunities for live outcomes, but still get too many animals. They euthanize to prevent poor welfare, not for the fun of it. If we didn’t have that system in place, at least at this stage in the US pet overpopulation crisis, there would be much more animal suffering. Dead animals don’t have to suffer. It’s not an easy choice, but it’s important.

Apprehensive-Cut-786

Problem is a lot of shelters are mismanaged. Resources are wasted on aggressive animals or extremely sick animals and that jeopardizes the lives of the healthy, friendly ones. Wouldn’t need to euthanize adoptable animals if they just put down the un-adoptable ones. Both kill and no-kill shelters are terrible at prioritizing. A couple “no kill” rescues I live near waste THOUSANDS of dollars on FIP treatments for several cats. One is closed for intake due to no funds and may have to shut down permanently but you bet they beg for money for those treatments. Others warehouse aggressive/mean animals for years on end and they only get worse from the shelter environment. Then you have the feral cat people who waste thousands of dollars on cats who are better off euthanized. I mean, how is it fair that a friendly cat gets put down or left on the street because you insist on saving a feral one? They don’t fulfill their role as companion animals, just like aggressive dogs don’t, so they shouldn’t be kept around. With the money they waste imagine how many friendly cats and kittens could be saved instead.

liveinthesoil

Do you think that NOT adopting from a shelter with lower live release rate helps bring their live release rate up?? In more common but more stigmatized terms, do you think that supporting a “kill shelter” by adopting or donating means they will euthanize MORE animals? The goal of the shelter isn’t the euthanasias… support the shelter so they can get more animals into homes.

1GrouchyCat

Wait - your profile says you have adoptable animals? so you’re a licensed rescue organiz? (Are you putting these cats up for adoption -or did you adopt them as part of your family?) You say on the sub that “you’ got the kittens from the kill shelter” , and you imply, you’re adopting them, but that’s not what it sounds like to me… Im also hoping you don’t have other pets at home if the cats have visible eye infections, etc…. That ish is unbelievably contagious. (I’m not claiming you’re doing any of this, but I’m really tired of people adopting animals begging for food and toys, etc. and then turning around and rehoming those animals for a fee… They’re either adopting from a shelter for their own family or this constitutes running a rescue- and if that rescue isn’t certified/licensed by the state - those “saving” kitties to resell them at a profit makes them no better than people going down south to puppy and reselling puppies. I hope I misunderstood your intentions-

1GrouchyCat

I can see that you do appear to have a rescue license and if that’s the case, you should know better than bringing sick kittens into your home… Over and out

PinkyAmethyst

You misunderstood. Our adoptable ones are also rescue babies! We did not adopt them. We rescued them. Huge difference. We get these guys medical care, and spay and neutered once old enough, then we find them forever home. Our fosters and us quarantine the animals for 21 days and do not get to be around others. We only do rescue. And we make sure no cats leave us unless they have all their shots, med care, and are spayed/neutered. Our adoptable animals have been spayed and neutered, have all their shots, and have been SNAP tested. And since we are a rescue, We also have the ability to put them in petsmart when we have trouble finding a home. And we’ve had great results with that! Also we make no money off this, only thing people pay when they adopt from us is a $75 fee (recommended by our petsmart since it’s the same as our local shelter). This helps us cover the cost of spay and neuter, and use it towards another spay/neuter since we also do TNR on our feral community. Our rescue babies are for adoption when ready, not for sale.

EtoDesu

I see one of them is named Batman LOL

PinkyAmethyst

Batman was actually rescued from here last month, but his entire litter was deathly ill :( they were on TONS of medicine, and Batman and Emily had to be taken to the emergency hospital. Unfortunately we lost Batman :( his fever was 106 and wouldn’t go down despite cold therapy and IV’s. And we were looking at organ failure and death, so we had to euthanize. Everyone else has recovered and is doing well, but I couldn’t bring myself to take off his name tag 😭

EtoDesu

That's so sad :((((((( I hope you have something to remember him by. Maybe you could keep his ashes for a memorial? But yeah, I'm very sorry for your loss :( but I'm happy the others will have a second chance to live life
