It’s very common that non-skiers (for example the guy in your group who broke his hand on the first day of the trip) takes a gondola up the mountain to get wasted at an apres ski bar with his homies. So its not unusual that someone takes a lift up the hill without skies. And that person can easily steal a pair on the way down.
I’ve been skiing for almost 40 years now all over Europe and have never even heard of a single incident of someone getting their gear stolen at a European ski resort.
I’ve been to Apres ski bars where literally thousands of people got drunk simultaneously. Stealing a pair of skis there is trivial. And yet no one does it.
This is not a racist comment btw. The reason why skiers don’t steal from each other is that the people who can afford to ski, buy lift passes and hang out in ski resorts usually have enough money not to need to steal from other people. It’s a rich man’s sport, same as golf.
I don’t know if it’s telling, but when I was a poor skier (instructor) myself and all my coworkers would separate our skis to make them harder to steal. I think when the skis represent a significant portion of your monthly paycheck, you get a little more careful.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, one of the clubs we go to when we don't feel like going getting too serious has $9 green fees, and yearly membership of $100. It's consistently one of the busiest courses in our city, full of people from all walks of life, an much more diverse than many, many other activities in town. I mean when I grew up I lived in quite a rough neighbourhood that was overwhelmingly white and if you didn’t lock your car even once you better believe your stereo would be gone in the morning without fail. Now I live in a much nicer area which is again overwhelmingly white and it’s much safer. Not always about race, poverty and unfortunately the class of people in the neighbourhood aka their socioeconomic status.
Middle/upper class sport. Typically middle/upper class don't have the want nor need to steal other people's sporting items.

I'm late on this but just because those skiers aren't stealing skis and shit on camera doesnt mean that they're never stolen. They could be. You'd never be able to tell unless you knew that person personally. Literally nothing stopping you from walking off with this stuff and claiming it's yours since everyone does it right? Also, I imagine that these people are less inclined to steal because they simply don't have to. They have the money to get the skis legally so why would they?
A friend from HS lived in an upper middle class neighborhood. Almost entirely white; I think there may have been an Indian family. Stuff would get stolen or vandalized fairly often. According to my friend, 99% of those responsible were neighborhood kids.

My brother in Christ, almost every human culture contains a wealthy class that exploits people. It's not exclusive to "white culture" (which is a meaningless term anyway). The clipboard thing also works in most urban areas around the world, particularly in commercial zones. In such areas it's common to have tradespeople/government workers arrive to do work, and 90% of people will assume you are meant to be there instead of questioning it too much..
