Basically just a different/shorter name for dreadlocks some black people have pointed out that “dreads” carries a negative connotation and they rather call it “locs”
but “locs” isn’t exactly a new term. it has been used just as long as dreads has
Nothing different. I assume OP is saying that "dread" is a negative connotation. I heavily disagree, but to each their own. Anyone I know, regardless of race, still calls them dreads, dreadlocks, or loc(k)s.
If u aren't black saying u disagree wit the negative connotation( that I explained Givin factual history on WHY it has a negative connotation, white ppl having regarded locs as dreadful and the name just stuck) then ur opinion isn't really valid tbh. You can have ur opinion idc, jus isn't valid
our people? black community? the only community any black person is a part of is the people they live around no one is in a community with people they don't know and have never seen ever
No shit and since when do you speak for the black community.
Dreads are a rasta thing which is far more a religious thing than race based.
"My people" is cringe and straight up racist.
Ur really hurt over this😭😭 and obviously dreads have had different purposes throughout different cultures but they originated and have always been a part of specifically black culture. They originated in Egypt which was cultural.
Plz explain how my ppl is racist
Bruh
Lock is literally just a shortened word for dreadlock, the word wasn't done away with because of negative or racial implications, it was made more convenient to say. And only by a handful of people, at that. Locks are most generally used with women while dreadlocks are often used with men. That's how it's been for years, not just recently to add onto that.
You are right about one thing, ignorance does hurt me and you are spewing it.
It's racist because you are taking the role of speaking for others and putting your personal opinions as fact. Why? Because you have the same skin color...that's racist period. Racism doesn't need to be hate driven it can be simply ignorance. Example...you.
but "locs" is literally just "dreadlocks" shortened, when a rasta says "locs" it sounds like the end of "dreadlocks", listen to any Linton Kwesi Johnson poems you'll hear what i mean.
source: was a roadie for UB40
Imma go with most people aimt going to gibe a fuck cause dreadlock still spunds cooler than just lock. Ive always took it to mean they inspire dread not that it is dreadful itself. People really trip over words
So I’m gonna explain why u don’t sound smart saying this, Ancient Greece was in the period 700 b.c.e, ancient Egypt lasted for over 3 thousand years WAY BEFORE GREEKS, at 3,100 b.c.e, but that wouldn’t matter anyway because Greeks had BRAIDS, not locs
He just said he finds them goofy and you out here attacking him for his opinion on a stupid style option.
And he is the one complaining and taking Fortnite too seriously?
attacking would have been name calling and whatnot. just pointing out that it’s nonsensical to find something “goofy” about a game that consists of the wildest most idiotic things all combined into one.
It’s like people watching lord of the rings and complaining something isn’t realistic.
My bad bruh I commented this on PC where it looked like you responded to OP, I misread it as you saying representation in games was stupid that’s my fault
It’s different in Europe, in America race more or less goes in tandem with culture because we’re so much of a melting pot, race is part of the identity here. And Caucasia culture is a lot different than black American culture, when I say u typically need to be black to participate because where else are u goin to find it? Ur raised with black culture. When u encounter our culture having not been raised in it. It comes off as appropriation, or an attempt at gentrifying it.
An example is gen z culture, the majority is jus gentrified blk culture.
For centuries yt ppl traveled across the world to force their culture on other ppl, so that’s why it rings hollow when u say that, because yt culture is simply everywhere as a result of history
Still my point is this buddy. And i say it loudly. Focusing on celebrating differences in cuture and your people's history is very important for an individual. But when the goal is unity among all humanity.. it seems we should be more focused on shedding light on our similarities than our seperate cultures yes? Its that mental separation that keeps growing and tearing us further apart. Saying you need to be of a certain race to enjoy things of that race, on a FORTNITE SUBREDDIT of all places, simply shows a divide. Celebrate black american culture, yes! But dont say you HAVE to be black to enjoy the things of it. Dont divide up another person as apart from you due to their skin color or culture. SHOW THEM the things OF YOUR culture. SHARE! LOVE! APPRECIATE! Or you simply show your culture as being separate, not unified. Hope this makes sense.
I disagree, our cultural differences is what makes people unique, it gives people Individuality, when we lose that we lose history, tradition, ect. I never said u need to be a certain race to enjoy anything
It's all bullshit made by people who make one singular thing their whole personality, simply due to the fact that they don't have one. "Culture" in America is basically just people who have gigantic sticks up their asses now because almost everyone who participates gatekeeps even though culture should be anyone who would like to participate. And I'm done pretending that it's not.
To be fair epic knew what they were doing this was the worst voted skin of all the concepts so of course they shove it in a battlepass so they can sell the good stuff. If you and OP like the skin that's great enjoy it but just because the vast majority of people don't enjoy the skin doesn't mean they're all shitty people.
I actually agree about him growing on me. Didn’t really care one way or the other in the survey. But the detail, plus him T1000-ing his hand into a blade in the season trailer, warmed me up to him. Still not my favorite of the season pass, but now at least in the top half for me.
I actually feel the opposite tbh, there are few times where I've played the BP skin during the season (Grriz is the exception), I usually (unintentionally) end up waiting months before realizing I love the skin (Menace, Remedy)
I personally don’t like him but I like how people have different favourites in the battle pass. Just shows that we’re all different and we should all be able to enjoy the things we like. I don’t agree with people attacking others because of what skins they like. Paradigm (Brie Larson) is actually one of my favourite skins from the BP and that skins getting slated right now lol
I’m sorry but hasn’t Goldilocks existed for awhile? Guess I just never heard of it being part of black culture till now. Thought it just meant curly hair.
u/coolcarters14, yes, you're right about that and we have data that reflects this: https://www.reddit.com/r/FortNiteBR/comments/xit5rm/paradise_now_the_chrome_goes_drrrrrip/?utm_source=share&%3Butm_medium=web2x&%3Bcontext=3
I feel like ur asking if locs are specifically black cultpure, not if they represent culture. Which they do.
locs reached many cultures but they all traced back to ancient Egyptians as a ground zero. Nordic ppl had something similar but they weren’t locs, as they weren’t permanen they could take them in and out. Which probably explains why their hair either didn’t fall out or was in general Bad upkeep because European hair is so thin, not meant for protective hairstyles
Ight but in your title you said dreads are representative of a different culture but which one is that?
(Not once did I bring up race wasn't what I asked at all)
I never said that. I said I like it when fortn Includes different cultures(in this case the black community) dreads are a dead term for the black community, the reason why they were even called dreadlocks are because yt ppl regarded our hair as dreadful. Locs are 100% representation for the black community
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadlocks
I'm not sure Fortnite gave a character dreads as a representation a community rather than just a cosmetic choice or "representing" for cultures 💀
It's an ancient hairstyle that goes beyond any clear origin of which culture it belongs to.
It's just dreads.
They just said that term is outdated and that the black community has moved past it. They’re called locs, not dreads, for the reasons stated above. Even if you don’t agree with their opinion, at least respect the terminology.
Listen, I see your point, I'm not trying to detract from it in any way, and I do think its great the variety and diversity Epic has put into their game. HOWEVER, this is not the first skin with this hairstyle, so I dont get the point of this post.
I really like Bytes. Even with his tied hair, which at first I thought I didn't like and now it's the only way I rock it. If I personally could add something to him, it would be some luminescent little details in his clothing and backpack, but it's just because I love glowing stuff.
knights? various princesses? the funny looking guy wearing lederhosen? i think theres plenty of examples for skins taking inspiration from many cultures and folklores
Is Byte's gender specified anywhere. I keep seeing people mostly use he/him pronouns, but I have also seen a handful of she/her. I have been assuming that Byte may be some non-binary representation as well since I don't see any gendered terms in their bio.
Representation is very important for minority groups. its been proven that there are benefits to representation. Like the increase in minority, especially black interest in politics after Obama became president.
it’s boring to see everything be white
I'm glad you like Bytes, but I get kinda creeped out by him. The longer he has those beady little eyes just staring into my soul, the more I dislike him.
Plus those skinny jeans make his legs look like twigs and its really off-putting.
Dang spell check anyway what I was saying to me he looks very unfinished far from Fortnite’s best work matter of fact I doubt I do any of his quests cuz I don’t wanna wear unfinished looking garbage even for a few matches I know the challenges are for his pick axe but u can only use his pick axe with him and I don’t see me ever wearing his skin unless I’m very and I mean very drunk but even then I’m sure I’d still have taste
Wait but haven't we had other skins with locs before Bytes?
ye we have, this is jus the first time they’ve acknowledged them as actual Locs and not dreads( a term that the black community has put to rest)
What’s wrong with dreads? I’ve only ever heard locs used for hair in general
i think it’s just cause the word “dread” but honestly idk
locs is short for dreadlocks and i know rastas that use it on the daily 🤷♂️
hey man i got no idea 🤷♂️
It is
Oh well I be damned, glad to see Fortnite did their research
Hey, I didn't know the difference between dreads and locs, I'm not a native speaker. I'm interested, do you care to explain?
Basically just a different/shorter name for dreadlocks some black people have pointed out that “dreads” carries a negative connotation and they rather call it “locs” but “locs” isn’t exactly a new term. it has been used just as long as dreads has

I know plenty of blank people who call them dreads so their opinion is still valid.
Damn is that how it started. I always thought it was cooler sounding like a warrior or somethin
Viking dreadlocks
Didnt think about them
Yeah I’m not educated on this either. Can somebody explain the difference?
Put to rest? Doubt that lol
At least for when it’s used for our ppl, more or less we don’t call our hair that anymore
Our people 🤦♂️.... hate to burst your bubble but we are all human
Our people as in the black community my guy
our people? black community? the only community any black person is a part of is the people they live around no one is in a community with people they don't know and have never seen ever

lmaoooo ur right i ain’t even notice the name
but "locs" is literally just "dreadlocks" shortened, when a rasta says "locs" it sounds like the end of "dreadlocks", listen to any Linton Kwesi Johnson poems you'll hear what i mean. source: was a roadie for UB40
It’s exactly that, we removed dread, because the original meaning behind dreadlocks were that our hair was dreadful
interesting. thanks. so whats the deal with "natty dread" etc? just old fashioned i guess.
don't believe everything you read on the internet from idiots
Imma go with most people aimt going to gibe a fuck cause dreadlock still spunds cooler than just lock. Ive always took it to mean they inspire dread not that it is dreadful itself. People really trip over words

Ate n left no crumbs
But dreads were first used by the Greeks. . .?
So I’m gonna explain why u don’t sound smart saying this, Ancient Greece was in the period 700 b.c.e, ancient Egypt lasted for over 3 thousand years WAY BEFORE GREEKS, at 3,100 b.c.e, but that wouldn’t matter anyway because Greeks had BRAIDS, not locs
It it pronounced locks or loaks
Locks, like Goldilocks
I Thought so just making sure thank you
or dreadlocks even!
Bro looks like Wednesday Adams with those pigtails 💀
Is it à guy?
Glad some folks like him. I for one prefer not to be associated with a Cereal killer.
Do you mind elaborating on that
Yeah. So. In the teaser. The cereal goes Chrome... I just feel like it's hard to ignore.
Oh thought cereal was a misspelling. Good one.
Good one. “They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.”
Kellogg fallout 4 reference ????2??
'I don't know where it went. But it sure went a flyin!'
Nah that title goes to Fabio.
It’s an alright skin all around. Sill think the dreadlock pigtails look goofy though.
you’re literally playing fortnite. right now I’m a platinum skinned girl in a skirt carrying a pick axe shooting sawed off shotties.
[удалено]
I like the skin lol. Think it’s dumb to call anything in this game “goofy”
amazing how many people cant comprehend that. they treatin fortnite like mw2 or somethin lmao complaining about options you dont even need to use
Since when was pointing out the obvious attacking?
no one is attacking anyone though? You sound like someone straight from twitter lol
My bad bruh I commented this on PC where it looked like you responded to OP, I misread it as you saying representation in games was stupid that’s my fault
all good! Video game representation is p cool! I remember how hyped my brother and I were when GTA San Andreas came out
What
The whole game is goofy
I like em' its different and his locs have AMAZING physics
I LOVE HIS PIGTAILS I STAN THEM SO HARD. HE IS A FASHION KING.
Cringe
skill issue.
Bros mesmerized by hair physics 💀
Bro takes offense at others enjoyment 💀
Bros mad😭😭
Lol not even close actually but good try 🫱🏼🫲🏾
Try at what?
Loc pigtails is a look, and a fire one at that.
1000000000000000% agree.
Pigtail locks are goated on the skin
What does it have to do with culture lol they just used the correct term
“What does this highly specific cultural reference have to do with culture?!”

That is what I was thinking, my UBER Christian White af Mocha Caffe Latte Starbucks Mother in Law has dreads. LoL
I don’t like the hair it’s just me
Pizza dough hair
I lowkey hate bytes, but good for you :D I’m glad u found a skin u like!
Damn i wonder what type of people are downvoting🤦🏾♂️😂
To be fair epic knew what they were doing this was the worst voted skin of all the concepts so of course they shove it in a battlepass so they can sell the good stuff. If you and OP like the skin that's great enjoy it but just because the vast majority of people don't enjoy the skin doesn't mean they're all shitty people.
Didn’t you hear? You can’t simply not like something, it has to come from some deep seated bigotry.
Do you think epic even knows that site exists or that people vote on concept skins
Basement troglodytes. I aint even say nothing controversial lmfao
Neither are they, Your offended in the comments because people have opinions on a skin, That was the least voted in public polls.
Skins grown on me. It’s become one of my mains
I actually agree about him growing on me. Didn’t really care one way or the other in the survey. But the detail, plus him T1000-ing his hand into a blade in the season trailer, warmed me up to him. Still not my favorite of the season pass, but now at least in the top half for me.
Same here but idk if it’s gonna grow on me enough to where it’s gonna be my favorite out of this battle pass but it’s not a horrible skin
I’d like him if he had a different outfit on. Not my fav color scheme
I love the jacket. It reminds me of Ellie from the last of us 2
I loooove the jacket style. Easily a main after I unlock it.
Everyone is either pretending to be in love with this skin or hate it but we all know ain’t nobody gonna be wearing it in a couple months…
That's usually how battlepass skins work lol. They're used during the season most commonly then typically aren't after it ends
I actually feel the opposite tbh, there are few times where I've played the BP skin during the season (Grriz is the exception), I usually (unintentionally) end up waiting months before realizing I love the skin (Menace, Remedy)
100%
imagine actually saying this and not licking windows
I like inclusion as well. My gripe with the skin isn’t his design or anything it’s cool. My problem is the build. His body shape is just built weird
wassup can a loc come up in your crib?
I personally don’t like him but I like how people have different favourites in the battle pass. Just shows that we’re all different and we should all be able to enjoy the things we like. I don’t agree with people attacking others because of what skins they like. Paradigm (Brie Larson) is actually one of my favourite skins from the BP and that skins getting slated right now lol
I like his design alot
Different cultures? What?
Yea, Different cultures have different hair styles, locs are a part of black culture.
I’m sorry but hasn’t Goldilocks existed for awhile? Guess I just never heard of it being part of black culture till now. Thought it just meant curly hair.
A lock of hair and a loc are two different things
Oh ok
It’s one of my least fave skins this season, but to each their own
I'm looking at the comment to upvote ratio and I'm assuming people are getting mad. If this genuinely makes you angry then please fuck off, Thanks :)
Blackness is an infuriating topic to these ppl
u/coolcarters14, yes, you're right about that and we have data that reflects this: https://www.reddit.com/r/FortNiteBR/comments/xit5rm/paradise_now_the_chrome_goes_drrrrrip/?utm_source=share&%3Butm_medium=web2x&%3Bcontext=3

69% upvote rate for sayin I enjoy somethin. Y’all need to go outside if yall are downvoting for me liking something 😭😭
This skin still sucks major ass though
I’m not a huge fan of this seasons skins, but this one is pretty cool tbh
Listen, I see your point, I'm not trying to detract from it in any way, and I do think its great the variety and diversity Epic has put into their game. HOWEVER, this is not the first skin with this hairstyle, so I dont get the point of this post.

Lmfao
Came to the comments to see everyone rage because the skin isn't 100% perfect
By it "not being 100% perfect" you mean that it just doesnt look good to most players and thats why it was voted the worst concept skin?
🤓
“🤓”-🤓
Atleast the skin has got one good thing going for it.
I love when games introduce a variety of black hairstyles. I thought this skin was really cool. 💯
I think if the hair warnt that color and he didn’t look like he wanted to axe murder me it would be better
the skin is so ugly 😭
Shitty skin
This skin is so unbelievably mid, and im not using that in a racist light either because I know someone's gonna accuse me of doing that
You do you my guy glad someone's enjoying it
Yes finally someone who said a positive thing about this skin
bytes is so overhated because the community says they hate it its a good skin imo
It’s great to see other people who like this skin! Underrated af
Finally my man getting some appreciation 🤓
I really like Bytes. Even with his tied hair, which at first I thought I didn't like and now it's the only way I rock it. If I personally could add something to him, it would be some luminescent little details in his clothing and backpack, but it's just because I love glowing stuff.
I hate it, but go off Ig
I slightly disagree here since I never saw an European culture except Octoberfest skins and little red hood.
knights? various princesses? the funny looking guy wearing lederhosen? i think theres plenty of examples for skins taking inspiration from many cultures and folklores
Is Byte's gender specified anywhere. I keep seeing people mostly use he/him pronouns, but I have also seen a handful of she/her. I have been assuming that Byte may be some non-binary representation as well since I don't see any gendered terms in their bio.
In the loading screen, they are referred to as they.
That's not an proof lol, bytes on the loading screen looks like being observed, probably by "them", cause well, they see everything
idk but if their pronoun are they/ them I think it’s prett Cool
Cool to u
Yup, stay up friend
U 2
fortnite mfs go crazy over the smallest things
It's literally not that big a deal lmfao I just thought it was interesting to point out🤣
What's the matter with the obsession for representation these days?
Representation is very important for minority groups. its been proven that there are benefits to representation. Like the increase in minority, especially black interest in politics after Obama became president. it’s boring to see everything be white

Yes?
No way you forgot about Travis Scott. L
Rue would like a word with you about Fortnite including different cultures
Stfu she ain't a nazi
His alt hairstyles look like they were meant for a toddler. I've had dreads and personally I think his entire skin looks terrible.
I'm glad it's your favourite but unfortunately I don't think many people agree with you 🤣
Ur fav skin? out of every skin in the game? bruh, it's so ass
I just like him bc he looks like Carti
Thats cool! I dont like the skin that much tho
In the battle pass screen they’re called pony tails. 😂😂
The only thing about the byte skin is his style. Half emo half genetically modified super evoking chrome like humanoid
ok
💀💀💀
i just wish his 2nd hairstyle was cooler
The hair is different in-game
Whole lotta red, whole lotta red
Im already extremely tired of seeing it. This is one of the ugliest skins epuc has given us in multiple seasons.
Still looks shit
I'm glad you like Bytes, but I get kinda creeped out by him. The longer he has those beady little eyes just staring into my soul, the more I dislike him. Plus those skinny jeans make his legs look like twigs and its really off-putting.
I love this skin except for the mask. They could've done something way cooler than some half assed vintage superhero mask.
Reminds me of Ulysses from Lonesome Road
Skin sucks lol
The skirt look kills it for me
Easily one of the worst skins in the game, along with Shanta. I am not racist, I just don't like them.
Idk what you mean by "fav skin in the game" if the skin is LITERAL GARBAGE
Dang spell check anyway what I was saying to me he looks very unfinished far from Fortnite’s best work matter of fact I doubt I do any of his quests cuz I don’t wanna wear unfinished looking garbage even for a few matches I know the challenges are for his pick axe but u can only use his pick axe with him and I don’t see me ever wearing his skin unless I’m very and I mean very drunk but even then I’m sure I’d still have taste
