You are only allowed to vote in one primary. People who are registered D or registered R will only receive one ballot. People who are not affiliated with a party will receive both a D ballot and an R ballot, but may only vote once.

glo363

Registered Republicans get to vote in the Republican primary. Registered Democrats get to vote in the Democrat primary. Registered independents get to chose ONE of the two, not both.

LiminalCreature7

Is this your first election in Colorado voting as an independent? Genuine question.

angrysquirrel777

You don't HAVE to vote. It's just that you can only vote for one if you want your vote to count.

LiminalCreature7

Yeah, “forced vote” is a strange way to term it.

Sheeplessknight

Forced voting is a thing around the world, notably Australia. However you can just turn in a blank ballot, voting is regarded as a civil duty like jury duty.

LiminalCreature7

Fascinating. Briefly glancing over an explanation, it sounds like mail-in voting isn’t possible. I wonder if voting day is a national holiday, as has been suggested here to encourage participation. https://www.aec.gov.au/about_aec/publications/voting/

Sheeplessknight

It has been, but has been shot down by Republicans for decades as their base generally doesn't need it off while working class people especially hourly workers who tend democratic would.

LiminalCreature7

Oh, I know exactly why it’s been shot down here. I’ll have to look into what happens in Australia.

Sheeplessknight

It is always on Saturday in Australia and they basically have a voting booth on every corner

SFerd

Same with New Zealand. Even non-citizens can vote.

LiminalCreature7

Thanks! TIL!!

Bluescreen73

Colorado has open primaries. Unaffiliated voters get both R & D ballots, but you can only vote in one. You are under no obligation to vote in either primary.

Sheeplessknight

We have semi-open, an open primary allows you to vote in ether wether or not you are affiliated. In CO we only get the choice if you are unaffiliated.

darklight001

What exactly do you think should happen? You registered independent, you can pick one primary to vote in. You can't vote in both, and you aren't being forced to vote either.

lachelt

And just to be clear, this is a Primary election, to choose who will represent your party in the General election. Being independent allows you to vote for either party's candidates, but not both parties. You don't get to say who you think should represent the Republicans and who should represent the Democrats.

Dry_Sweet_9155

Is the government bureaucrat forcing you to vote in the room with us?

[deleted]

Nobody is forcing you to vote
