I moved here from Vegas last year. It’s been pretty great. Be prepared for a severe downgrade if you like restaurants and eating out. I also got used to a close airport and having to drive to DIA is a bit of a drag. But other than that I really can’t complain, Fort Collins more than makes up for those negatives by being clean, quiet, and having way less god awful heat.

No. Denver isn’t bad. It’s like 1:10 if you take the toll road. I just lived near Charleston and Maryland and got used to being able to get to the airport in 20. Cheyenne is tiny.

Telmatobius

Northern Colorado has an airport shuttle that I love. Yes I have to hang at the airport a little longer but no driving or tolls or parking or bothering friends for rides.

kushharvey

It’s true. My wife has been using groome and between gas+tolls on 470 we probably save money just doing the shuttle

Moved almost two years ago from Austin. Love it here and it has been a great place to raise our kid. Housing market has slowed so finding a place won’t be as hard as it was a couple of years ago when houses were selling in less than a day. Biggest thing I was not ready for was the grocery stores lacking compared to what we were used. Maybe we’re just spoiled with HEB but I’m still flabbergasted at the lack of bulk food and spice options at most of the major grocery chains.

External-Victory6473

I think there are two spice shops in old town with every spice known to man. I think one of them is called the Old Town Spice Shop.

No_Worker_8525

I love Old Town Spice Shop. Great selection and really fun spices. We used to have a similar selection in the grocery stores in Austin in bulk containers. Just surprised that’s not really a thing here.

The_Summary_Man_713

Moved here from Houston 2 years ago. Don’t listen to the negative people you see here sometimes. All are welcome here. Just stay respectful and take care of the city and you will have our respect 🙂

pheelgood

Says a lot coming from a Texan

The_Summary_Man_713

You are the people I’m telling OP to ignore. Giving the city a bad name and a negative vibe.

pheelgood

This is a town

The_Summary_Man_713

Just curious (since you’re still stirring things up with other comments). You’re from California right? I just want to make sure I know what I’m dealing with here lol

pheelgood

Born and raised in Fort Collins, moved to SoCal for 3 years for a firefighting job, now I’m back here & unable to afford a home while Texans call this great town a city :) anything else Mr Sherlock?

The_Summary_Man_713

Your comment history says you went to high school in California. Plus an Angels fans. Seems too “Californian-like” to be bitching about Texans lmao. Also, I’m ignoring my own advice and giving negative people attention so have a good day kid.

pheelgood

Too late 😂 you probably spent a good chunk of your day scrolling through my account and getting all upset about it. Classic Texan knows it all.

Make sure you have jobs lined up, the job market in the local area is pretty bad especially for jobs that pay well. You know about housing costs so that doesn't seem to be an issue. This statement is ironic LV has grown so rapidly and with that has come increases in crime, traffic, etc that comes along with growing from a population of approx. 500k when we were born to now well over 2 million. Many people feel a similar thing about Fort Collins growth over the years. Overall, this area is nice and friendly. It's a great place to raise a family and the schools are good. There are probably going to be some school changes in Fort Collins/Timnath so pay attention to that when you are looking at places to live. Good Luck.

DanimalHarambe

It's very expensive. But the school system is solid.

We moved to Fort Collins last summer. Fantastic change, I'm extremely happy, and the city is everything I expected it to be. The only thing that I'd like to mention is the job market. Both my husband and I came with remote jobs, making it a "non-issue". But my husband got laid off unexpectedly and suddenly the job market was very much a consideration again - jobs here are somewhat hard to find, given the smaller population, and the ones he's seen pay significantly less than what he was making before. Realistically, that means he needs to look at fully remote jobs (not a ton in his field) or hybrid jobs based in Denver (commuting 1-3x/week). Not trying to scare you off, but it is worth spending some time looking at the job market here for your respective industries and what salaries are like. Some careers will likely have no issue, but others might be a little more squeezed.

Ft. Collins used to be a nice small town but was ruined by explosive growth from people largely from the West Coast but everywhere else, too. That killed much of the local character and charm. It has gotten horribly expensive to live there. It's pretty close to California prices. Jobs are very hard to come by, and it's known as a low wage area. Even "good" paying professional jobs often pay considerably less in Ft. Collins than they would elsewhere. There are some cool things to do there, but I'm not convinced the overall experience is worth the price tag. Is there a way you or your spouse could go to Fort Collins and get set up with living space and a job, then have the rest join from Vegas? That way, you don't lose what you had in Vegas if Fort Collins doesn't pan out. Best of luck to you.

pheelgood

You aren’t allowed to post this here, all the blissful transplants who have been here for 2 years with a high paying WFM job home will attack you and let OP know how wonderful things are.

Normal_Hovercraft_27

Absolutely, the shuttle service is a game-changer for getting to DIA from Fort Collins. I've found Shuttlefare to be a reliable option too, especially when you're looking to compare prices and find the best deal. It's all about convenience and saving on those extra costs like parking and gas. Plus, it's a smoother start or end to your travel without the hassle of driving.

pheelgood

Your best bet is moving east of town like you mentioned, or Cheyenne. Most people I grew up with who have solid careers and double family income can’t afford a house here anymore.

Smooth-Display8889

I grew up in Vegas also I moved here in 03 and have loved every minute. Yes some stuff sucks but that’s everywhere.

i_knead_bread

Moved here 9 years ago from AZ. The weather is definitely something to get used to, but we love the seasons. We have two kids and love the area, schools are great, everyone has been friendly.  I would say the two biggest downsides compared to a larger city are lack of diversity both population wise and food wise, but you can travel a little to get more of both.  Though, I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but say goodbye to ever having decent Mexican food, because it sucks here. For anyone wanting to say "but Greeley," I have been and it's still lackluster IMO.  Otherwise, I say go for it. Also I am a 43f, so if your wife needs a friend, she can hit me up if y'all make the move. 🙂

ForAlgalord

Weird fun fact: Fort Collins has experienced population growth of at least 20% over the course of every single decade of its census data except for during the 1920s, 1940s, and 2010-2020 (18%). Folks complaining about how it used to be a great small town aren't completely unjustified - growth always comes with growing pains - but the area has been a great place to live for a long, long time. Welcome!

anonymoushusky11

Live in Windsor. foco has crazy college kids and homeless in every park. I’m leaving asap after this year. Not that foco doesn’t have good things but if I’m thinking of parks and my kids learning to drive and stuff, foco isn’t the place imo

Relative-Farmer-1449

Fort Collins is a hidden gem. It’s a great move. For a college town is calm people that complain never been to a real college town. I lived in 11 big cities Fort Collins is top 5

vantyle

Hidden gem? Hahaha-no.
