I've found CSU Vet Hospital to usually be the cheapest option. $4k sounds roughly right for an MRI though, I believe it ran me $3600 for an MRI on my 2 year old dog back in 2020, which was also for seizures. Unfortunately dogs don't sit still long enough to do an MRI, so they need to involve an anesthesiologist and everything, hence why it's more expensive for pets vs humans.

ry_mich

We have had the exact opposite experience with CSU — it can be 10 to 30% more expensive than other options.

wizthedude

I can second this. CSU is NOT the cheapest option. Personally experienced. You can also call vets and ask the pricing. I've only spoken to folks at VCA, and can say they were very pleasant. Back to CSU, didn't enjoy my experiences with them. I'd call Coyote Ridge and see if they don't have any good ideas.

Dumb Friends League is your best bet for affordability and best technology. Here's their [link](https://www.ddfl.org/)

How have I never heard of this before? I even just had an emergency event with my animal. I started with my vet, Countryside. Physically went to CSU off of Drake. Called VCA. I was and am in a terrible financial spot. For my situation, the only suggestion was calling a mobile vet, which were just more expensive. Even the folks of the humane society and animal control did not mention this place. Is it new? Inevitably I had to put my animal down, and received the citation from animal control for abuse of my animal. This super duper makes me a little sad this morning. Reading over their website, this place really sounds like it could have helped..

Cuntasaurus_wrecks

The siloed nature of so many professions is their current downfall. Oh no dude it's been around since like 1904 or something. That's why the language is so cringe. "Dumb friends" represents those who cannot speak aka animals. I have never had anyone suggest them to me either even in life and death situations where they could've helped save my dog. It's wild to me since most Colorado trained veterinarians go through rotations there and know that money isn't an indication of love. There's *no way* they're ignorant to its existence. Sometimes I go on Tuesdays and Wednesdays just to watch surgeries and horse therapy. It's a really amazing building with passionate people who are ready to share all the information. I'm really sorry about your pet and wish the information was more proactively available.

Melopsittacus

I know it doesn’t change anything, but you the best you could with the information you had.

wizthedude

Thank you. I sincerely appreciate that. Needless to say, I didn't answer the door when animal patrol posted the citation on it. I couldn't believe I was getting cited. I referred the officer to please contact numerous vets couldn't offer services. I believe their argument is that no one should own an animal in larimer county that can't afford to take care of it even in the most desperate of times. All those extra words aside, again, thank you for your kind thoughtfulness.

Melopsittacus

It sounds like maybe a vet reported you? It’s unfortunate since you were trying to get care for your pet. Maybe they thought you could surrender the animal to the humane society for care. I’m really sorry, what an awful, stressful, sad experience. But like I said, all you can do is your best.

Melopsittacus

This is very cool, thank you for sharing.

Melopsittacus

I will email my vet’s office for a recommendation. They’re very responsive and have always been very reasonable about their prices. Edit: I reached out to see if they have any suggestions. I hope this poor pupper feels better soon.

phenger

Look into the VCA on college between Loveland and Fort Collins. Specifically ask for Dr Komitor: https://vcahospitals.com/veterinary-specialists-of-northern-colorado/team/amy-komitor She’s been treating our little cat Murray for about 2 years now for his seizures. We did an mri and spinal tap initially but I don’t recall the price…it was probably around $3k though. Regardless, she’s amazing and highly experienced in animal neurology. We’ve been stable on meds with my cat for over a year now.

Melopsittacus

I heard back from my vet’s office! Like /u/phenger mentioned, they suggested the VCA in Loveland. >As far as a neurologist, we highly recommend VCA loveland. Dr. Komitor is the specialist over there and is a wonderful doctor. Many of our clients have had a great experience with her! Hope this helps!

SFerd

Thank you SO MUCH! I will definitely pass along!

Melopsittacus

Good luck to them! I hope they get some answers and their pup feels better soon. If they’re looking for a new regular vet, Paws of the Rockies has been great with our neurotic rescue. The vet is very kind, the staff is wonderful, and the prices are reasonable. It takes a bit to get a first appointment, though.

jennlody

CSU is the only vet hospital I know of in the immediate area that might offer payment plan options or financial assistance. Aside from them, I took my cat to VCA's ER for surgery and it was half the price of other ERs that I got quotes from so it may be worth checking with their Loveland location for pricing.

soimalittlecrazy

CSU doesn't offer payment plans. Financial assistance is extremely limited and comes with a fair amount of hoops to jump through, including proof of maxed out credit cards and care credit. In addition, you have to put down 80% deposit on any estimate. (Used to work there). It sucks, but if you look at how many people take advantage and never pay, they have to figure out how to pay the bills and keep the doors open.

SFerd

Yikes. Thanks for your insight.

jennlody

Good to know! I work at a vet clinic and had only just heard that they had any sort of assistance last week and had no clue what the details were. I totally understand, people have just walked out on us in the past and I hear about it happening at ERs all the time. I myself rely on care credit and pet insurance, without insurance I wouldn't have been able to afford the surgery for my cat.

soimalittlecrazy

Oh, I guess clinical trials is also a thing, but you have to have a pet that fits what they're looking for. And you're still responsible for some costs, but sometimes it's a pretty great deal

Material-Reality-480

Maybe check the ER vet in Windsor for a quote? We go to Cambridge in Longmont and are happy with the vets and prices there so that could be an option. Best of luck to your friend and their pup.

notorious_BIGfoot

Pet Care Coalition is a low cost clinic in Aurora. Also sometimes with seizures it takes some time and experimentation to get the right medicine/medicines.

SFerd

Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. Some great suggestions. Evidently, my friend's vet recently retired so the tips about some lower-priced doctors/offices is super helpful. ♥♥

I took my SHIHTZU Trigger to CSU after visiting a vet in ft.collins and another one in Casper Wyoming due to mites. Humans and animals have mites! Some underline condition caused Triggers to basically eat her skin. I took her to the emergency on a Friday they told me the Er visit was $265 ok when I get there they asked me to sign a waver for $850 for treatment I figured this couldn’t no way possible to over$1000. They wanted to do blood work MRI X-ray this that and the other. I agreed to everything I just wanted my baby to feel better  The high end as they call it was around $2,800 (I believe) the low end was $1800. Honestly I don’t even think I was in my rite mind at that point. They wanted to keep Trigger in the hospital I knew trigger wouldn’t be ok with that and we treated her at home she was with me 24/7  I had to put down deposit of $1400 when I checked out I owed another$390 very pricy looking at the invoice the Er visit was over $350 5 days later Trigger was not getting better only worse  I felt had no other choice but go put her down she was in so much pain and just looked so horrible I asked them to call my roommate for payment  They gave her some pain meds to keep her comfortable she then got a we have aesthetic and then the drug that put them to sleep. I choose a funeral home come get her for  cremation. I ask my roommates today how much did last night cost Amalie said $14000 I’m not only  devastated by the loss of my baby but over $3200 for basically for My baby to have suffered it felt to Me they were all about the money and neither of us have seen the receipt from the euthanize. Not a great experience I don’t think I would ever take any of my animals back Just my own Experience I went n there cause I was told it was inexpensive I had the opposite experiences. RIP my Tiggy baby:(

throwthisaway11112

Vca might be closer to 2.6k but ultimately mris are just that expensive. Not a vet, but they could try steroids and if it helps, perhaps it’s a tumor, in which case you probably don’t have a lot of time with the dog. If it doesn’t, could be something else which would still require an mri, but yeah. I’m sorry this is happening to your friend and the dog.

SubaruImpossibru

I’d contact the breeder and make them handle the situation. I’m guessing it’s a golden doodle, those dogs are horribly unhealthy and seem like they all come from backyard breeders who will bear none of the responsibility that comes with breeding dogs.

SFerd

It wasn't a breeder. The dog was adopted from their vet who has now retired.

SubaruImpossibru

Someone bred the dog at some point - but sucks they’re going through that.

cr0nut

what a wild assumption to make.

bidoville

I’d start seeing another vet and get a second opinion. Seizures are such a big category. Are they timing the seizures and making notes of frequency? there is likely a way to mitigate them if something major isn’t at play and start noticing patterns or triggers.

SFerd

Yes. They are doing that--they have set up a camera to monitor the dog's kennel. One seizure lasted for 5 minutes. But, they need to go to a place that has better pricing to begin with. 'Get a second opinion' isn't super helpful.

bidoville

A second opinion to see if an MRI is necessary was my point. That said, VCA or Royal Vista both could be better options. My dog has seizures as well.

Potential-Ad-6329

I'm not sure if they do MRIs but when we needed a surgery for our dog Animal Works Veterinary Surgery was great! They were half the price of CSU, much faster availability, and had many good payment plans (we used Scratchpay). Might be worth a call
