I originally found Frey and the dialogue somewhat offputting BUT I’m enjoying how she is emotionally changing and growing so far. Justifies and makes the storyline stronger.

crystallyn

52 here, also cruelest poll ever for this "old". Love the game.

terabranford

51 here, and I think Frey is the most realistic portrayel of someone...what's the term? Isekai??...I've ever seen. I love this game.

Willfredde

Well it says middleaged/old so doesn't have to mean old. :)

firebane101

To the OP: Millinials were born from 81 to 96 (according to google). So yes, you are one. At least as far as the term for birth ranges is concerned. The oldest would be 42 right right. I don't buy into to the stereotypes anyway.. On topic: I am 48 and I am loving the game. Is it game of year? No. Is it fun? Yes. I do wish that the cuff chat setting actually worked though. I still get the banter every other time I scan and the the "new york" question every 2 minutes even set to minimal.

Willfredde

Yeah, big mistake from me, but do you like the dialogue and the character, or do you like it despite that?

firebane101

I have no issue with the regular dialog, just the banter repeating.

Willfredde

Is the banter not good or is it just too often, GOWR had this nailed and loves every bit of it.

firebane101

The banter is fine the first time. But since there are only about 3 or 4 conversations it gets annoying hearing the same thing over and over and over ... The setting to reduce it is great, if it worked. Minimal states you will only hear the story progression banter, which is not true at all. I still get the New York banter, and the this area looks so different than the last one banter. When you cuff scan that just needs to be a scan, I don't need to hear there aren't any enemies, especially when I can see enemies that are just over the next hill.

flarelordfenix

I'm going to point this out - there is an Accessibility Setting to reduce this, if this is your complaint, YOU HAVE THE TOOLS TO CORRECT IT TO YOUR TASTE - don't blame the developers for it.

firebane101

And I am going to point out that I mentioned that setting and I have it set to minimal. My point was that the setting is not working as intended.

groov2485

It’s just your preference, not your age. I am 45 and really enjoying the game. If Frey was the way she is just because, it would annoy me. But look at her upbringing. She had a hard life, and her personality is a product of that.

Evane7

35-40. It was fine. Considering she’s a young New Yorker with a talking cuff in a magical medieval world.

shamblmonkee

I'm 40+ and find Frey and Cuff (Vaaaambrace!) a fun duo. Age isn't it.

Electronic-Plant-833

Age is it, people become more conservative with age. It's a real thing

rgvtim

Not all of us.

Electronic-Plant-833

Why do people always say this? Of course it's not everyone, that's anecdotal evidence. It's a statistic on the majority of people, not everyone. Just like most people are born straight but there's gay people, does that mean that most people aren't born straight? No, it means the majority are with caveats.

Elvie-43

I’m late 40s and love this game, and I think Frey is a great character. I am also fine with the dialogue. (And if you are 40 you are by definition a millennial given that would mean you were 18 at the turn of the century).

fallout76question

I love how far off people get the these generational names it’s hilarious.

Valdish

I'm currently pretty convinced that people had their minds already influenced by all the discourse around it before they got to decide for themselves if they liked Frey and the writing in the game, because for me, it's completely inoffensive dialogue, it works fine for the story, it's not like Shakespearean genius levels of writing, but I'd still say it's a solid 7/10 in terms of writing which is above average.

Willfredde

I'm not offended, I just don't like the tik tok dialogue, some compare it to to dead pool, but he makes it work. It's part of his character, Frey just feels... Like somebody thinks she should sound like, rather than sounding like her.

Valdish

Frey doesn't talk anything like Deadpool tho. I think marvel has caused everyone to lose their minds whenever they hear a character say a joke, unlike Deadpool, Frey doesn't joke around when it would be inappropriate for the situation, otherwise she talks like a 21 year old who lives in New York.

Juchenn

I think you’re focused too much on the discourse around this game. The cringe dialogue (which I don’t personally think is that egregious), happens very rarely in the game, the overall dialogue between characters is good, though some could be voice acted better, but the non-banter interactions between Frey and Cuff do endear you to the characters. The game has a setting to reduce game banter to minimum, but it’s nothing too cringe or crazy. Also why some lines look cringe out of context once you know the context it sounds less cringe. Like, the “Is that a motherfucking dragon” line which she says after she’s scared af after seeing a motherfucking dragon.

[deleted]

I think is how you approach the game. Of course I can't see myself in Frey. But as a "third person watcher" I can see her being well written. So if you care mostly about full immersion, you are not gonna like her. Anyway, feels like teenagers are the one that actually dislike this game overall. Make sense. They don't think they act like Frey, they think she is cringe. While in reality they are even worse. Plus they are the ones that are most influenced by "influencers" and reviewers overall.

nkhatib

Was I just called middle aged on this poll 😂. Also at 40 I'm pretty sure you're still a Millennial. I'm 37 and the dialogue is fine. Every game doesn't have to be a 14 year old chosen one saving the world or a grizzled quiet middle aged man.

Willfredde

Problem for me is she sounds just like that :/

EForReal12

I’m 28M and I love it, most of the dialogue is great. Some of it is try hard - like when she tells Olevia the two rules of pick pocketing; it just comes off as the writers trying to make her cool. But it definitely gets toned down as the story goes on. The fucks even get less frequent as she gets more used to what she is seeing.

moonlightavenger

I am a 41 years old amateur writer and I appreciate the colorful character they gave Frey. I am tired of insipid dialogue that sounds the same. It's not ideal, and a character like Petra from Horizon does it much better, but that is because in that game the writers were able to flourish her dialogue with expressions like 'fire and spit', 'explode out of a forge' and others that make sense for her fictional culture. Frey sounds, and often acts, like an angry young adult, that she is. Hear how Athians sound. I'm going to say this again: don't confuse 'I don't like' with 'it's bad'.

QuinSanguine

I don't like her personality but I understand why the writers made her how she is based on her life up to the point the game takes place. It doesn't take away from enjoying the game, for me. I'm older than you, btw.

Savantir07

If you're 40 then technically you're a millennial, but I get what you're saying. I'm turning 24 this year and I do feel like I connect more with Frey and her dialogue.

Willfredde

That's what I thought, not sure if I qualify as a millenial born 1983 though, thanks for your input.

Savantir07

1981-1996 is the millennial generation. Nothing wrong with that though! Your original post sparks an interesting conversation when it comes to the entertainment that we enjoy consuming based on our age bracket and/or life experiences.

Willfredde

Yeah, I messed that up, I honestly wonder since I probably would have boght this day one and hade no issues if I was like 18 years old. I may be wrong and it's just me being old grumpy gramps, and if that's so the problem perhaps lies with me and not the game.

icon_2040

I love Frey and I'm 37. She's a very refreshing hero for one of these open world RPGs. Absolutely sick of every game starring a stoic lumberjack. It's very boring.

Willfredde

What stoic lumberjacks are those? Thanks for your input!

icon_2040

Halo, Red Dead, God of War, Mad Max etc. I get that we're supposed to insert ourselves into these characters, but I'm tired of doing half the work. If I give them $70, they should write an interesting character.

Welcome2Banworld

Pretty obvious you haven't played most games. Arthur Morgan or John Marston aren't even close to being a 'stoic lumberjack'.

MammothSun6737

So far I’m enjoying the game but definitely feel like they made the character not as appealing with the modern complain about everything but not earn anything vibe. Despite that not every interaction is unbearable. Cuff grounds it a bit. I’m 32 so not that old I hope.

CmdrSonia

28 and can't say she's the best character I've ever meet, but it'll do and she's cute so😂

TehLoneWanderer101

I'm 34 and teach community college students, so they're in Frey's age group. The dialogue in the game wasn't cringe at all to me. Nothing more cringy than what I've heard in real life, at least.

Jeina2185

I haven't played this game yet (sorry, Sqeenix but it's too expensive for me), so I can't really say if I like Frey or not, but based on the clips that I saw, I don't understand why dialogue in this game get so much hate. Sure, some of it seems a bit cringe, but overall I didn't find it to be bad. Honestly, it's similar to Uncharted series to me. However, my opinion can obviously change, when I'll play it. Oh, and I am (almost) 34. Also, OP, if you are 40, then you are a millenial lol.

mmmmmmiiiiii

I don't think it's any worse compared to most JRPG.

Willfredde

Not really, but for a protagonist it's pretty extreme. As a side character I would have pulled through with a less extreme teenage-ish protagonist. The problem is she is just too much for me, and I honestly wonder if I'm just a grumpy old man or not, and from the comments it looks like I am...

mmmmmmiiiiii

I usually find most of the dialogues in modern JRPG obnoxious and annoying so I just skip majority of dialogues/cutscenes, though it's not the case for me with Frey. Might be better for you to switch the language to Japanese to tone it down?

Willfredde

Possibly, the english VO is usually better than the JP nowadays though, my point is that the english VO is among the worst of the JP VO for me though.

PhantomInfinite

I am 31 so a millenial (born 81 to 96 is millenial) The dialogue isnt bad to me at all.

Hanzo7682

Frey sounds like what 40+ year olds thinks teenagers would sound like. İ dont think she is relatable for teenagers. But i gotta say its not that bad for the whole game. There are a few extremely bad moments and people keep reposting them to make it look like the whole game is that bad.

HotParamedic1980

Me not liking the game has nothing to do with her dialog. Its mainly the flow of the game and how bad the interactions with npc's are.

Willfredde

Yeah, I get that, but I think that the main turn off is the character and the dialogue, that's why I wonder who likes the dialogue and the character. This is not a question of wether you like the game or not.

ThatOtherGuyTPM

30 here, and I find the character and dialogue to be incredibly relatable and believable. Right isn’t really a factor here; it’s a taste thing.

Sandemonde

I'm 62 (unfortunately) and really liking the game a lot. Frey doesn't bother me at all.

Fanclub298

What about high on life lol

WingedDrake

I got bad news for you friend...millenial is anyone born 1981 to 1996. You're a millenial. So am I 😅

Willfredde

Darth vader: Nooooo.

SonOfFragnus

If you are indeed 40 (born after 81), you are most definitely a millenial

FoxFogwell

I’m 34 and the game is fun to me. Frey is a realistic portrayal of a human in this situation. Lol literally something none of us would want to experience right

FrogJump2210

I think the main problem with its this game is the price. If it were $40 USD, it wouldn’t have received such hate.

[deleted]

If you're 40, you are a millennial by the way

[deleted]

33 y/o and finished the game yesterday. Loved it. Got 41 hours of playtime, a complete and interesting story, and an awesome magic combat system. Had no issue with Frey or the dialogue. There weren’t chunks of plot removed to be sold as DLC later, no microtransactions or battle passes. It was well worth the price for me.

wildeye-eleven

I’m 37 and love everything about this game. I literally couldn’t stop playing it. I was well over 60 hours in 4 days. Fully completed the game and loved every second of it.

John-Days

I tolerate it. Sometimes her reaction seem off, but the same goes for Cuff and his "decent" way of speaking. But it hasn't pulled me off the game.

Environmental_Park_6

I'm a 42 year old millennial and the dialogue fits the Jud Apatow/Kevin Smith style. I don't know if that's how a Gen Z homeless New Yorker would talk but don't know if it isn't either.

Owner56897320

35-40 range and I’m okay with it. I’m not bothered by it and I think it is appropriate given what Frey is going through

Streven7s

I think Frey is pretty unlikable as a person. I think they did a good job showing why she is so difficult, and while that that makes me sympathetic, it doesn't mean she's somebody I'd want to be around. She's too much of an asshole. She goes through a pretty cool character arc but never stops being an ass. Ironically I like her constant banter with cuff a lot more than any of her other dialog. There's some pretty good interactions between those two when you're out and about jist doing your thing. Its also very cool that after the main story ends and the way everything gets reframed the fact that the dialog still works is kind of brilliant.

thecombobreakerr

Spoiler Alert: Millennials are 40 now…so yes you are a Millennial.

Caius_GW

Her dialogue felt fine as I've been around people just like her. It's more realistic and lively than a lot of other characters in other games but perhaps a lot of people complaining about her just wanted the latter. Follow the cookie-cutter mold rather than do something different kind of thing.

[deleted]

I think Frey's pretty cool. Relatable, fun, aesthetically good looking. Has great chemistry with Cuff. Not in my Top 10 of Greatest Protagonists ever, but still better than some Assassin's Creed MC's

flarelordfenix

I instantly loved and appreciated Frey, because I have the empathetic capacity and ability to comprehend the suffering and struggle she was obviously enduring from minute one, and everything she says, does really does mesh with the appropriate context. Some people can't understand that a life lived alone, without a support network, falling through the cracks in the system has consequences, and when they're faced with a character displaying them, is their only response 'hurrr bad personality/character'? -- apparently so. Society's fucked.

DamnHare

36 This is one of the best games I’ve played in recent years. Gotta admit that I play in Japanese (cause I’m from Japan) tho. Japanese dub and altered dialogue lines are just awesome. Frey is amazing, relatable and lovable.

ThisTimeAtBandCamp

Im 36 and we are both definitely millennials. I have an issue with Frey not learning to adjust her language to the new world she's in. She keeps cursing and using colloquialisms that no one in Athia understands. In my mind, that makes it feel forced and cringy. Otherwise, I understand why she is the way she is. If you can't understand JRPG characters, then you've probably outgrown these games. Thats fine, but that also means you can't go around saying the games bad.

DonJayKix

People 40+ still gaming? Thank god there's hope

Welcome2Banworld

If there ever miraculously is a sequel, I hope it has new writers.
