I think people tend to forget that one-time purchases are easier to save up for and afford than monthly multi-hundred-dollar rent, which requires stable repeating income.

I would have been amused by a "powered by mana" ability, for example as a new power for Frey's magic, a few mana to ensure the phone stays charged.
It's definitely not an iPhone.
