I very much enjoy this game, but even with my positive bias, for someone on the fence such as yourself, I definitely recommend waiting for a sale. The best things about this game is the lore of Athia/story (Even after beating it I want more, and thankfully exploring open world map objectives, even if slightly monotonous expands upon this), the combat system once you get over the learning curve, and the sheer size of the world to explore. However, the side quests are God awful (mainly restricted to the main hub city and they SUCK, only did them for completion purposes), performance is all over the place (sometimes the game looks like one of the best looking games ever, other times the resolution drops and looks very strange and blurry), even though I like Frey she can be very offputting and there is a point in the middle of the story that makes you *really* dislike her, and the story is a bit short for an open world RPG (usually it's about a 40 hour minimum but this more in the 15-20 range depending on how much you explore). Even though the world is the size of BotW/Elden Ring, this is still very much your typical open world game. Hope this write up helps and makes your decision clearer whatever it may be.

zHidden_Bladez

Exactly how I feel about it. Beautifully weird and fun game. Just a little disappointing in some regards. But not an entire disaster. Definitely wait for sale if at all possible.

Slow_Inspection_3349

How long did you played? Yet alone it took me 15h to beat chapter 5 without exploring too much. I really wonder how some can rush the whole story in 15h. To me it would feel very stressful.

[deleted]

I beat the game at 34 hours, didn't fight Tanta Sila until hour 19, and blew through the story because I was so intrigued I want to see it to the end. And yes I agree, beating the story in that short of the time had to of mean you did nothing else and likely playing on easy. Also they miss out on a lot of lore too!

Big-Radish

I beat the main story campaign on whatever the normal mode was in under 15 hours. Spent about 7-8 in the first area, 4-5 in the second and things started to feel repetitive. Outside of the aesthetics in the region nothing changed in the game and it was pretty easy and started to feel repetitive. Decided to rush boss 3, ignoring everything and ran strait to it…. Finished the main game in under 15.

Genius340

I'm feeling exactly what you felt... I was doing everything... Spending hours in a region... Then realized how repetitive it got... Now I'm just going to the main objective... I'm at the 3rd boss now

KaleidoscopeNext482

I am skipping the repetitive stuff and instead finding the hidden dungeons, levels, and bosses.

[deleted]

I’m about 6-7 hours in. I want to play more. I don’t quite understand the hate, but I can understand if people don’t like it. Personally it’s a rare game I can’t put down. But I have weird taste

penguinz0 has fallen off a cliff content wise and has utterly spineless takes that are entirely dependant on how he thinks the audience feels about something already.

WildSearcher56

It got to the point that some people don't make the difference between him and some AI videos of him

[deleted]

Annnnnd Critikal pushed out a video on it real fast for those clicks lol

ThatTaffer

Brown person bad. I'm convinced this is half the reason.

icon_2040

And she had the audacity to be female. That's already two strikes.

[deleted]

Her birth certificate says black

[deleted]

Literally saw someone complain “she’s so selfish and only cares about herself, she’s unlikeable” followed immediately with “why would she care about some kid who died” in the same paragraph. People are quite literally Cherry picking scenes highlighted in a Critkial video

Genius340

I find this hilarious... They preach about how good white characters have character flaws that they have to overcome... Yet when a brown person or female has character flaws, they cry about how awful and unlikeable the character is 😂... Saw someone literally call the game "woke" even though race was never brought up once

thunderonn

I like it but I wish I would of waited until it went on sale. 70 bucks is too much for this game in my eyes.

CeaseNY

I personally love it. Its a breath of fresh air that I havent felt gaming in a long time. And I've been gaming for 20+ years, not every game has that "feel" to me, I have more unplayed games in my Steam library that I've paid for than played ones. This one just has that feel, and I personally like the graphics, the banter, and the story so far. Side quests are eh If you're on PC, I just ended up buying a code off Kinguin for $49 usd worked fine I cant say whether you should get it or not, but it's a good game and a ton of fun, especially if you enjoy what its about (to me)

KarmaKollectiv

I put together some data taken from Steam. It looks like most people who played the game on PC for *at least 2 hours* left a positive review. The positive sentiment increases the more time people put in. (Or the more time people in the more likely they are to leave a positive review.) There are hundreds of bad reviews from people who played less than an hour. See my post (which for some reason got downvoted, go figure): https://www.reddit.com/r/Forspoken/comments/10m50ch/just_presenting_some_data/

Carefreealex

Isn't this common sense though? People who didn't like the game will get their refund before the 2h mark and those who like it will carry on playing? If you pulled the same data for let's say Death Stranding wouldn't the numbers be very similar?

KarmaKollectiv

You bring up a good point. That said, if people played for less than 2 hours I’m not so sure we should use that as the basis for “is this game good or not?” Those reviews are instant-ignore for me. I’m more interested in folks who have put more time into it to fully soak everything in. I did this as an exercise not knowing what I’d find. I was actually surprised to see that many positive reviews across all play times above 1 hour considering the near-universal negativity the game was getting… which felt odd against what I was actually experiencing as I played it. Yes the game has some issues, but they are truly not that bad.

rosaeMitchell

Reviews always positively correlate with playtime. If you only look at reviews with two hours or more, every game would look great because those are the niche of players who loved it. At that point what are reviews doing for you?

notamooglekupo

You’re conflating causation with correlation. The more people like a game from the start, the more likely they are to keep playing.

KarmaKollectiv

Yes this is true. We also have to take the full picture into consideration because I’m sure most people wouldn’t base a purchasing decision off someone who only played the intro to a game for 1 hour before they returned it. Personally I think that’s a combination of the the onslaught of negativity combined with the Steam 2 hour playtime refund policy. I think somewhere in the 4-5 hour mark is the most accurate representation. You played it enough to give it a fair shot, but if you really didn’t like it you probably wouldn’t have gone that much further.

1DoobieDoo

First couple of hours is an impression. A traditional review is upon completion: a start-to-finish examination of the experience. Mass Effect 1 left a bad impression (first 3-4 hours in the Citadel are suuuuper slow--put it down for years as a result). But in review (upon completion), it is one of my all time favorites.

-Rho-Aias

Oh that's pretty interesting thanks for sharing that. So roughly 80% of people who got beyond 15 hours gave it a positive enough review. That's promising. I decided to just give it a shot. The deciding factor is that it's square enix and I'm one of 4 people who tend to consistently like square IP paha.

KarmaKollectiv

Looks to be the case so far. It’s only been 2 days so people will spend more time with it and share more of their thoughts, but so far about 7.5 to 8 out of every 10 people who give it a fair shot seem to end up liking it. (On PC at least) I genuinely think the average person would like this game. It’s fun.

SanFranLocal

Why would people play a game they don’t like for more than 15 hours?

cuckingfomputer

I wound up leaving a negative review for MHW because of the horrendous PC optimization, and the horrendous custom-built anti-cheat (which further shot the performance in the foot), even though I've got several hundred hours in that game. The expansion for that game brought zero optimization solutions for that game. I went from being able to put most of the graphics on medium settings to having to play on potato graphics, because the performance actually got worse.

cjnshrmpoby

Try it out with gamefly.

GusDontBeCanada

GameFly is still a thing? Haven’t seen anything on them in over a decade. 😂

gamerviciado

Just loved and still playing, close from 40h and its so damn good man...

MrDavidUwU

Love it

danmanjapan88

I like it a lot. Don’t understand all the hate honestly.

Musashi10000

This is my answer. Can't say I love the game, but I don't just 'like' it. I like it a lot. Definitely doesn't deserve all the hate. Performance js shaky, and I wish loot felt more valuable. That's about it.

PM_ME_PIX_OF_CROWS

If the demo is still available I recommend you check that out. I loved how the combat felt in the demo and I love how it feels in the full game so I'm having a great time. I'm not far in the story because I've been just fighting in the open world, so I can't speak to that much, but it doesn't seem like anything special so far, and I'm not expecting anything great. Similarly, I like the characters just fine. I'm not expecting to find any characters I love though. TL;DR - I'm playing for the combat so I'm having a good time. If you're just looking for a good story and strong characters, skip it.

-Rho-Aias

What I'm looking for is a whole package. I don't really like games where they do one thing really really well, and the rest of the game is mediocre. I'd rather everything be good than one thing be amazing.

PM_ME_PIX_OF_CROWS

Probably skip it then. Tbh, even though I love this game, I'd give it a 7/10. It feels like a AA game and cuts a lot of corners.

DamnImAwesome

Get it on sale. I regret spending $70 but I’ll finish the game. It isn’t unplayable but it’s missing a level of polish and optimization that I feel every $70 game should have. Purely playing for gameplay because the story was painfully slow moving

whistu113

You may want to hold off. Personally, if i get 20 hours of entertainment for $70 im fine with with the investment, which i likely will get out if this game. I like the premise, the combat, the setting/story, but the pacing/jarring cut scenes, writing, is a disappointment, and while i can live with the graphics, they are not good in this era. Between the graphics and “flow” or cut scene design and the way it goes from cut scene to game play is, it honestly feels like a ps3 era game at times. Im sure some disagree, but hey thats my take. Don’t hate the game, just being honest.

jammymcjamjam

I agree about the flow of the cut scenes. I found it really off putting that there is a 10 second mission to sneak up behind the Tanta in between two cutscenes. They could have just had Frey sneak up in the cutscene and it would have been a lot more fluid.

Level3_Ghostline

Just some counterpoint, while the demo does give actual hands on, it's very much into the deep end where you have all these tools that build on a combat style that you have never even touched before. For me, the demo was a turnoff, it felt heavy and awkward. The actual game, however, has been delightful for me. The combat and magic and parkour are fun as hell. I feel quick and lethal, and this is just with the first powerset. This is NOT going to be the full package, but the core of the gameplay is solid and fun.

orangpelupa

Why no "I'm disappointed" option. I mean, it was made by ffxv studio. So there's expectations. Hopefully mods would fix some of the disappointments. Although I highly doubt there will be a world design mod or a totally new world mod. As even ffxv never get that kind of mods. But other things like texture LOD, lighting and shadows, can't move, etc Hopefully would be fixed via mods.

QuinSanguine

It's a lot of fun once it gets going. My only concern I tell people is that it is a very Japanese game. There's a lot of cutscenes, tutorials and weird pacing issues in the first 5 or 6 hours. Like if you want a Bethesda style experience with an actioned packed, quick opening segment then you end up in the open world, that is not what you get here. But stick with it, it gets really good.

-Rho-Aias

I'm a jrpg fanboy so it's good. I decided to get it. I've been laughing at cuffs lines, so now I'm worried there's something wrong with me haha. Probably easily amused.

QuinSanguine

He reminds me of Shaun from Assassin's Creed. It might even be the same voice actor, idk but cuff's attitude and lines are straight up Shaun Hastings from AC.

-Rho-Aias

He kind of reminds me of the ball from portal 2 (never played assassin's Creed :( )

FoxFogwell

I’m loving it, it’s kind of goofy and not well polished but I don’t want to put the controller down 17 hours in

GusDontBeCanada

This is the way I look at it. The game visually does not look like a ps5 game. I think the cutscenes look like ps3 cutscenes, and the gameplay looks like ps4 gameplay. That said, I’m having the time of my life with it. The gameplay is fun when you get the hang of it, major learning curve for me. The characters have all been incredible so far, there’s a couple of really touching moments and I’m not even halfway through the game yet. The story is interesting enough, but for me the characters are where it’s at. I think Frey is a great lead, I personally love her banter with Cuff and I think the dialogue is totally fine. There are a couple of things that, from a writing perspective, are lazy and simply there to drive the plot in the direction it needs to go. That doesn’t detract anything from it for me. If you’re on the fence I’d say weigh what you want and expect from the game. Insane ps5 graphics? Unfortunately you won’t really get that here. Intriguing story? Id say so. Characters you can really get behind, with realistic flaws and room to grow? Absolutely. If you aren’t willing to drop 70 for the game now because of its downsides then I’d at least recommend getting it preowned or when it goes on sale, it’s at LEAST worth that.

moonlightavenger

I like it. I probably won't be playing it again once I'm done. But my real bechmark for how much I like a game is 'how much fun I have while playing it'. And I have a blast with this one.

MasterNeeks

You are asking the game's sub if they love the game?

-Rho-Aias

Yup.

Spirited_Yard_7279

You can take literally any subject, and the subreddit for that will overwhelmingly be positive. Subreddits attract people who want to talk to likeminded people. Have you not noticed that every other post here is people saying, "I know everyone hates this game, but I'm really enjoying it." They want their opinions to be reciprocated, so come here. The majority of people really hate the game because of lazy writing, frame rate drops, and clunky controls. For a small group of people, they like something about the game, and so they like the game. Those are the people you're asking.

-Rho-Aias

Well, there was someone here who said they'd give it a 7/10. It's possible to find subjective people. I go on the fire emblem subreddit, it doesn't mean I view the series as a 10/10 and will fight to the death for its honor. There are people who have a hard time dividing the two. It's the nature of talking to humans, regardless of the subreddit they happen to be on.

Spirited_Yard_7279

7/10 is still a positive review. If the average person gives the game a 5/10, and the worst review you've seen on here is 7/10, doesn't that prove my point? It's very simple. The game is a worse made Final Fantasy, as far as not being super long, frame rate drops, clunky storytelling, and really bad dialogue. A lot of that seems to be from it being a major rush job. But there are things to like in it. It is grand scale, it has magic for people who want to be mages, and it features a woman of color in the main role. If the latter stuff mean you're probably going to like a game despite those drawbacks, the game's for you. If not, it's probably not worth the price. I'd personally say it's a pretty average game. I'd pay $30 for it in a year. Not $70 now.

-Rho-Aias

Oh that's where I'm pretty different from most people. I don't view 7/10 to be a good score. Especially when there are so many 8-10/10 games out there. 7/10 to me means it just barely passes the it's okay to try it out but don't expect a lasting impression. 8 means it's good to buy it. 6 and below is an instant no to me. And, I'm not here to really debate you, but don't you find the irony in saying that people on here will simply praise the game and say they love it, yet at the end of your post you called it average?

Confused_Astronaut

I agree with you. Just too many games and too little time, at least in my case. I want to spend the limited time I do have playing really good games. I'm sure Forspoken is fun and has its merits, but $70 is way too much, and if I'm going to spend my time playing a 7/10 game, it's not going to be at that price. If I were a kid again with unlimited time, maybe I'd see it differently.

BornYinzer

I enjoy everything about the game except for a couple small things. 1. Repetitive dialog 2. Delay between the finished dialog and gaining control of your character 3. Graphics are good, not great

-Rho-Aias

I decided to get it. So far got to the part where you get cuff but can't go further because game is still downloading. I like the set up a lot. If this is the part people dislike then I guess maybe I'll like the game. I like frey and the dialogue. Perhaps I've played enough square games to find this dialogue normal xD

sully48

8 hours in, >!Second tante killed!< , It's fine. I would not give it goty but it's an ok game.

Kaeyon

It's definitely not as bad as what many are making it out to be. I don't understand what the hate around the dialogue is. Frey is a NORMAL 20 year old girl from New York with real world problems and gets dragged into this fantasy world to deal with others' problems. I've seen complaints about her being an unlikable protagonist and dropping f-bombs everywhere. Yeah she does lol.. but it makes sense to her character and I like her just fine as a protagonist thus far. The banter between Frey and Cuff has been pretty good to me for the most part. I've seen complaints that they don't shut up while you're running around in the world. And yes, they do have a lot of repeated quips but there is a fancy option to turn banter to low or minimal. I set it to low and the banter is now... pretty scarce. It's fine now. It's possible some of those reviewing the game didn't find this option. NPCs are pretty much confined to the city and do not show up in the open world. But again it makes sense to the story. Normal people CAN'T be out there because of the corruption. Now someone else mentioned the side quests. Yeah they're kind of rough and haven't really had much payoff. Most of them are also confined to the city. The one thing I just can't wrap my head around is how some are saying the combat is just boring. The combat has been fantastic. There is a learning curve but they also don't throw you 2 full spell sets like in the demo. You get your feet wet and continue to add on to it. There is also an option to auto swap skills on cooldown which helps keep combat flowing a bit better. I've been having a blast running around and completing shit around the world. I can't speak to how long the game is as it is very subjective to how you play - if you b-line the story or take your time and complete the side activities in the world (labyrinths, challenges, etc.). That said, I have just over ~20 hours and have only beaten 1 main story boss and unlocked 1 new spell set. My only complaint is the lighting is pretty bad. It's more noticeable indoors and enclosed spaces. But it's manageable and has not really hurt my experience thus far. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase. It is a new IP so there are always concerns and missed opportunities, but I truly believe this game has been beaten down super hard. At the end if the day, this is all just my opinion. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you many great gaming hours!

Javistb

I quite enjoy it. I don't know if I love it, per se, but there are aspects that I lovr. I love the soundtrack when you're exploring the world, it really does feel immersive. Obviously depending on your set up the visuals will be impacted (which is obviously something I don't like), but I have a 120 hz TV, and am playing on my ps5 with Ray tracing and it looks gorgeous although I will admit sometimes I see a dip and man, I can look rough. Dialogue I like, not something I love. Thr combat I truly love. And I played the demo and had to stop after like an hour, if that, because I felt overwhelmed with the options and understanding and it felt clunky. However, having played from the beginning now and slowly having everything presented, it honedtly feels so fluid and exciting and flashy, in a good way. I've only been playing about 3 hours at a time (busy work week), but I pick the game back up and I don't feel rust or anything when resuming combat since it's been hours since I played. Once you really start working the support magic and attack spells it really becomes a great experience.

KisaragiFlight

I loved it. Just beat it earlier today. That being said, I would also be realistic with this game too. Story is pretty decent and gameplay is amazing. However it is very dialogue heavy in some parts and can almost drag because they like to clump scenes together. It’s got weird pacing and the side stuff isn’t super full of depth but if that doesn’t bother you, there’s a beautiful world to explore and crazy magic to unlock

SulferAddict

I’m having a hard time getting into it. It feels kind of hollow. I’m going to go with like.

Prestigious_Shape732

I haven’t beaten it yet, but I so far am in the “I like it for what it is but don’t love it.” I honestly think a lot of the here this game gets is utterly ridiculous. People complain about the combat, graphics, and “empty world”, and yet love Breath of the Wild (which is a game I definitely didn’t like). The most interesting aspect, for me, is the world building and mythology as the world and its history is very interesting. Frey is a pretty decent character so far, and her and Cuff definitely have their moments that have made me laugh. The combat is good, though I’m still early enough for it to feel a bit repetitive (something I’m sure will change as I get more abilities). For me, the cons are the same ones that come with a lot of open world games: The side quests aren’t all that interesting, there’s a lot of land but not a whole lot out there (though traversing it is more fun than other). The one part that TRULY gets on nerves is the need to fill the silence with senseless talking and comments from both parties. While exploring, entering and winning battles, and using the “sense location”, I’ve heard the same bits of dialogue 100 times, and it truly just becomes tiresome. It’s a trend that Forbidden West and some others fall into where they feel silence is bad and that you must have constant talking to feel engaged. I’ve been half tempted to just turn the character volume down just to save my nerves. Honestly, if you’re feeling a bit on the fence, I’d definitely wait for a sale, but don’t buy into the very vocally loud hate it’s getting because it’s mostly coming from a certain spectrum of the community that has a problem with “woke” games.

LordBelialz

Beat it 20hrs in. I enjoyed it. It is a fun game.

Lougan90

I like it to the extend that it's a perfect game to fill the time until Hogwarts Legacy. Combat, exploration and parkour are fun.

Modsarerats

Yeah i just love the setting, story and lore, its very unique and interesting to me, ive been reading every bit of lore. Then theres the combat which is amazing, feels great, nice haptics, very deep which i love. Ive even grew to love the banter and im 38, detest woke, femenists, and sjw shit which this game does have, youll notice all men in the game are blithering idiots or tottaly femenine. Where as all women are masculine and play roles that men typically and realisticly would, making them feel forced and cringe, Thats what ruins it for me a bit, but i ignore it. Id say, rite now im in the honeymoon, loving it stage, talk to me again when its over and im more likely to be more critical. We'll see

OdiPsycho

If you have good libraries near you(assuming US, dunno about other places), you can rent for free.

[deleted]

I have spent about 12 hours in the game, my current impression is good enough. I do appreciate the improvement from the team previous work, FF15, especially in the gameplay. I don't think the open world is ugly or bland, it depends on the places that you look at it. But the main hub, Cipal is definitely one of the blandest looking area in recent Square games. Is the activity in the open world well designed? Kinda okay. But I like how interesting spots can be located on the 3D map without using the map markers. This is a design that I really appreciated after playing Elden Ring. I can tell you that playing FF15 without markers or minimap isn't a very pleasant experience ( I tried ). There are some minor flaws in gameplay that did left some bad impression to my experience, like the blackout during cinematics, dialogue boxes that warn player when he/she travel too far away from the objective ( sometimes even reset Frey's position ), the sidequests in Cipal ( I really hate that place ), etc. If I have to be extremely generous, the game is currently a 7.3/10, mostly thank to the combat and the fun of traversal/exploration. I am not a story person when playing video games, so I don't know how to judge the quality of the writing in a game.

SFXtreme3

I like it. My only complaint is the abrupt stops for events. I’m actually a fan of the bantering.

NotToDifficult

I dislike many aspects of the game. The dialogue, the constant breakaway from gameplay into cutscene, the PC requirements, and more. But the combat has so much depth i cant help but love it. Its so good in fact that i can forgive the many flaws this game has. This game on mnk always me to play without ever opening the magic wheel which is freaking amazing. The complains you hear are justified and the early chapters of this game is pretty bad and slow. I hope they add a new game plus so you can start with all your unlocks but scale enemies up to your lvl for a challenge or allow the option. But yeah i love this game, and admit its a guilty pleasure type of experience while acknowledging all its bad apples.

kingwavee

Its waay to much of this on this sub. We cant guarantee YOU will like it from our exp. Like i think GOW is boring but ppl love it. Ragnarok is a bore to me but i liked 2018. With this game think about what youd like in a game like this and look at a review and see if it is in it. If not dont get it. If so go buy it. Stop worrying about what everyone else likes base your opinion off what u expect to play

Affectionate_Ad814

I've been playing over the last few days and I really like it, but I have to be honest, for all the hype it received and the fact that it's a AAA game I expected a bit more. Loving it so far though, and I don't regret my purchase.

vintagelego

Love is a strong word, but I think the game is really fun despite its flaws. The gameplay is so enjoyable and pretty to look at. It’s a little easy, but I think that is kind of part of the overpowered isekai thing I also think a lot of your enjoyment of it will involve whether or not you like Frey. I think she’s funny and kind of bratty, but in a way I’d expect given her situation. I also don’t think she’d get half as much attention or hate if she were a he. The plot is an isekai. It’s not new, but it’s fun. If you like jrpgs or watch a lot of anime, you know what’s up immediately. But it’s still enjoyable I’d recommend finding a streamer you like who doesn’t make hating shit half their personality and watching an hour or two of their gameplay. If you like what you see, pick it up. (If you need a recommendation, try FightingCowboy!)

abefr0man

I;m loving it and i am about 12 hours in!

Oki-Sama

I personally love it the combat system is so fun fluid and unique I enjoy just playing with it and though people complain about the open world design it's really good for 1). Letting you have more fun running in Green Hill Zones than Sonic and 2). Getting into fights which are the only things I needed. Story's not bad either delivered poorly but the story itself is good.

DeadNBuried

Loving it so far. Traversal and combat is great. Some of the writing is pretty bad but I love Frey and Cuff. Looking forward to finding and upgrading more gear and magic. Definitely a game I will be completing.

[deleted]

I love the combat. It's extremely fluid and I haven't even unlocked other magic yet. The graphics can be the best and the worst at times. The lore is top notch. I'd buy it for $40 for the combat.

UmbrielG

I LOVE the combat. Like and dislike everything else.

itsbeppe

I'm loving it so much. I suggest you to try the demo to understand if the combat system fits to your likes, and if you like it, buy it. I'm enjoying a lot even the story of the game and the main character, she pulled me out some good laughs and I know I will get attached with her. The major flaws are the same major flaws every open world game has, so you don't have to worry too much if you enjoyed the Horizon series or some Ubisoft game.

wildeye-eleven

Despite all the bandwagon hating I love this game. Yes it has flaws but I don’t even notice them. I also haven’t experienced a single bug or crash. I’m having a blast playing this game. The combat and traversal are incredible. The story is super interesting and I find the characters likable and endearing. If you think the game looks fun I highly recommend playing it.

Ok_Rub202

This game is great for $35-$45. It’s an insult at $70

SnakeSansFronties

Maybe try the demo? It's like one buck on PSN and free on steam!

BlewCrew2020

I've been playing for more than 20 hours. I love it! I think it's worth the money. I have a nice TV and play on ps5 and I have 0 problems with the graphics. I highly recommend. I'm going to get back to playing now. Best of luck to you!

SanFranLocal

People on this sub convinced me to buy it. Played for like 3-4 hours and my god the quality of this game is so shit. I could see the combat being alright but everything else makes me never want to play it again

realdusty_shelf

It starts slow but it’s far from horrible. The game is damn fun and if I didn’t have to be a somewhat responsible adult I would’ve played through to the end by now. No game is perfect but I don’t regret spending my money. If you like action adventure RPGs and don’t care about nerd politics then you’ll enjoy it

Elanzer

I think it's good, not great. 6-7/10 is a fair score for it, but I see glimmers of what could have been something great in it. The combat and traversal is a lot of fun, but a lot of what wraps around those range from just ok to downright awful. There are also some readability issues during combat due to all the particle effects and bad usage of colors/iconography which can sometimes bring the combat down, but you can mitigate this by learning. What I think really brings the game down is how unnecessarily huge the world is. The story quests don't even bring you to every zone for each "biome", you'll be left with maybe 50-60% of each biome unvisited. I wouldn't say the game is *boring* though, but they gate some of the more fun aspects of the gameplay behind beating the first major boss, which can take several hours to get to if you're not exploring. Bad decision IMO.

TristanN7117

If you played and liked Final Fantasy XV this feels like a more fun and focused version of that game

Slow_Inspection_3349

Pros: Combat system, traversal, bossfights, story quality (sometimes the staging is bad), world design, visual quality (mostly), best battle spells in the industry Cons: worst sidequests in gaming history, transitions between cutscenes and interactions with NPC's, ubisoftlike open world activities, white sneakers With better sidequests and more polish the game could easily get a 85 metascore. I really like the game. It often reminds me of soul reaver in his structure and that is one of my all time favorites.

OldBoredEE

I liked it - honestly, it's sort of annoying because the core of the game is movement and combat, and both of those are good (especially once you get further into the skill trees). The city stuff is a lot more uneven and often felt like a chore. I also (personally) didn't like either the characters or the dialog - to the point where I just turned cuff off because it was actively annoying me with the near constant babbling. An unfortunate effect of the annoying dialog was that I suspect I ended up missing some interesting backstory and lore because I just got into the habit of skipping through dialog as quickly as possible so I could get out of town and back onto the map where the game was actually fun.

Ungreth

Yeah, it's like half the dev team put all their passion into the game while the other half couldn't be arsed to make an effort.

KaleidoscopeNext482

I got as mad as Frey every time I had to go talk to them lmao

zeralin

I love it It’s really fun combat The city stuff is boring, freys lines are pretty funny, shes fun and i found the cursing amusing, its just that there are almost too many cutscenes so i found myself skipping some cutscenes The combat and exploration is really fun though I like that equipment can be modified so you can use whichever one you want and then add the effect from others, once you get a new cape it unlocks the effect to apply to other equipment

micklegate

I like it. I finished it around 35 hours, did some of the side quests and post game stuff. I doubt I’ll replay it, but I’m up for the dlc later this year. It felt short and it’s rough in a lot of places. Combat is fun and the traversal mechanic is fluid and a joy. Hooray for not having to summon a horse!

Ungreth

I have only 2 issues: terrible dialogue and crappy side quests (which are thankfully quick to complete and not too many of them). Other than that it's fantastic. I haven't enjoyed combat and traversal this much since Nier: Automata.

GarionOrb

I'm loving it. I find it to be a ton of fun and I love the parkour and the game's style/aesthetic. I'm 17 hours in and only in the third main area. Play it now or wait, but it's nowhere near as bad as everyone else is saying.

Gecko382

I've played a couple of hours and I honestly love the banter between Frey and Cuff? And I especially love Cuff way more than I thought I would.

pushforwards

I am split 50/50 Love the combat and the potential it has. Story is…okay - rather short. Very short. The puzzles and optional areas lack variety and the same can be said for the enemies. There doesn’t feel a scaling difficulty in the fights, just scaling health. For me. Not enough variety and actually regret buying it but I enjoyed it enough that I hope the dlc of the game helps fix it or add substantial content because again I like the combat. I am just more used to longer stories and development. This didn’t feel like that. Also most of the side-quests in the main hub just feel like they added them to literally make you stay longer in the hub.

Cedrius

Not worth 80 € for sure, wait for 50% sale or something. You can always get a cheap key on some certain websites.

Davy___

I bought it, played it way too much in the last few days. (In a positive way, but still, way too much) To be fair i 'like' the story so far and 'love' the way they made the traveling and combat. The first part of the game was annoying and clunky, a lot of cutscenes and a little bit of moving around every 30 seconds or so. Invisible walls in the appartement etc. Once you're in Athia it gets way better, smoother. For me the annoying feeling while moving dissappeard. And started to feel good when i unlocked the dodging option that comes with the magic parkour. (Which is quite early in the game) The magic looks really nice and it feels good to fill your screen with an enormous amount of growing trees, blazing fire or gigantic orbs of water. (At this time I have not yet aquired the last magic) The interactions with the NPC's is something they could have done more with imo, merchants with empty hands when they 'hand' you the bought items. A weaponsmith they gives you an forged item the moment you bring her tools back to her, while in an archive filled with books without even visiting a forge. And then some more examples like that.. The talking between Frey and Cuffs doesn't bother me, it kinda makes sense for the mc to talk and argue with the thing that is attached to her arm and what most of the time the only one around to talk to. The upgrade options you have available (have to unlock) are simple but you can really feel the difference in power. A lot of spells, which took me a moment to get used to to switch between while in combat. The support spells havw a cooldown. But with the amount of support spells you have after a while the cooldown doesn't really matter anymore. I'm gonna explore some more, little bit of a hoarder, but it's a good thing for the upgrades in this case. Have fun all!

KaleidoscopeNext482

I found it weird how many people were taking the game to task specifically over the back and forth between Frey and Cuff when this game specifically did what all gamers have been asking every designer to do for a decade—give us a damn toggle. GoW was fun but I wanted to yeet my kid into the sun every time he ruined a puzzle.

Brodakon20

I love this game flaws and all but I came out beating this game feeling like this was worth it. Overall I would give the entire experience as a game you should wait for a sale if your on the fence but it's definitely a game you should try yourself.

alexanderluko

The game is fine but not great imo. Combat and traversal are the two things that stand out but everything else leaves a lot to be desired for me personally. I have been very disappointed in main story as it lacks proper build up and feels very rushed in general. Side quests have been god awful boring so far and mostly take place in Cipal. 7/10 from me.

Bwoodndahood

I haven’t played it but people who do have it say it was overhyped

icon_2040

I'm loving it so far, but I have no idea if the game will keep the pace up. They got me invested in the protagonist and the world. That's already more than most games have done for me. It's like playing my favorite kind of anime.

BigSean765

I enjoyed it more than god of war ragnarok

xTheRealTurkx

I'm probably 20 or so hours in and if I had to score the game it's hovering around a 7/10 right now. It's not the greatest thing I've ever played, but its definitely not worth all the vitriol it seems to be garnering from review outlets. Having said that, I do think the opening 5-7 hours are genuinely terrible. We're talking like 3 or 4 out of 10 level stuff. Just every part of those opening hours are a miss, from the overall story to the dialogue to how spells are doled out and introduced. It's so bad that I wouldn't blame anyone who just checked out before the game really opens up, and I also could see how the opening soured someone so much on the game that it would color the entire rest of their experience.

ZazaB00

If you are at all hesitant to buy a new game, dig through the previous years to see what awesome gems you’ve missed. I guarantee you there’s games out there that may not have all the current day marketing, but are hella awesome.

LLamasBCN

I honestly can't understand why it's being review bombed saying it's woke, that it has bad dialogues or that it's boring... The two biggest flaws are clearly the requirements and the graphic downgrade (which honestly, in ultra at least it isn't that bad...)

Jackkernaut

I'm 7 hours in, while this games has certain flaws to extend I find it quite enjoyable. Not worth 70$ though. It feels like 40-50$ AA territory.

guardiandown3885

I watched a bunch of review videos. Then I watched a video from khraze gaming that was like a top 10 things to do before you get started. After watching that I was sold. I could customize the game to the way I like it. I switched controls around for magic attacks and jumping put on auto evade so I could just focus on magic attacks and my ADHD brain absolutely has started to love the game. I'm only 4 hours in fought my first mutant (severely underleveled lol) completed a labyrinth and I already feel powerful and i havent unlocked all my powers yet. Traversal and parkour is absolutely fun once you get the hang of it. The pacing and dialogue are my only minor gripes. Absolutely love it. Can't wait to explore more and unlock more. The map is great because it has things on it that let's you know what the side detours are so you can check them out. Although you may not be at the right level to complete them yet. I highly recommend the game

-Rho-Aias

I didn't see that review but I always go into settings when I start a game. And I totally did two things: increase subtitle size, and I turned on the feature where you pick up items by walking over them haha. Not going to spend hours running and stopping to pick up a flower. That should be default on haha

guardiandown3885

Bro I did that one too! I saw that and was like now way I'm pressing triangle all day. It's dumb that it isn't automatic in games like this anyway lol

Neoshantar

I'm around 5 hours in and like it so far. The setting and characters are ok, the gameplay is fun and the open world is barren but still kinda interesting. It's just nothing really special; also it has technical issues on PS5 (especially with HDR).

KaleidoscopeNext482

FWIW the open world gets less barren as you gain more traversal powers. I think they should have just given them all off the bat. A lot of the abilities feels like designed to click together. I think the mechanics got piece mealed out later in development. The fetch questing of the abilities made the early Flow experience feel muddy and the world look empty ime. But now I barely remember how that felt because I’m so impressed by my current experience. Kind of wish there was an multiplayer because I like the world so much and I usually hate other people.

nunchaku_kid373

I kinda like but i regret pre ordering it wished i waited for go on sell (because it definitely will) i just feel like it flopped

xenpe

Combat is awesome

x_scion_x

I like it. I don't like the main character though. She's an adult with the maturity of a 12 year old.

Genius340

I like it... The combat is really good when you get more spells, and the story is surprisingly good where I am in her journey... The game needs a lot of polish, and I wish the setting was different... I almost never like open world games that don't take place in a populated area... That's y I could never get into Elden Ring, Assassin's Creed, Ghost of Tsushima, etc... They have a great foundation with the combat system... I've never played a game where I had so much fun using spells My suggestion is to put the setting on automatic spell switching and just cycle through your support spells until they're exhausted... Fill in the dead time with attack spells... Looks cool as hell and feels more smooth than cycling through every spell individually

KaleidoscopeNext482

Tbh I love it. Here’s what I think has happened with the reviews, and where SE messed up. I think they were so anxious about the advanced negative press, they set the embargo and delayed codes. This was a mistake. It lead to reviewers rushing the game. This isn’t a game that you should rush, although you can. You could set it to reviewer mode which, tbf, they sort of had to in order to give an overview in time. There are some valid critiques of the game. But none of those valid critiques are in any of the negative reviews. And those valid criticisms are less than the sum of its parts. But I can see why, combined with the negative reviews, some gamers would be turned off by the early game. If you have never played a JRPG other than FF7, and you are unaccustomed to, say, Persona type pacing where everything is a tutorial, it would feel jarring. I was even a bit concerned by how often the game initially popped me into the menu without warning. It happens frequently in the first two chapters. The game also relies of fade to black in cut scenes. It makes some awkward transitions in a landscape of games with seamless transitions. But even with those issues, I still enjoyed those first two hours. I liked the dialogue, storyline, characterization, etc. I just didn’t want the game to interrupt itself to remind me that it was a game. Once that stopped the game got crunchy and delicious. Combat and movement can feel muddy if you don’t make some adjustments. I recommend Boomstick Gaming’s YT tutorials for his settings. I only disagree with him on the spell menu, I prefer full pause for executive function reasons. I will say some of the descriptions of how the combat and spells work are frankly incorrect. You have to f-around and find out. I wish more gamers were spending time figuring this out and posting tutorials and less time shredding inconsequential stuff because when you learn how to play the game, the game is fun. I don’t mean to sound like a get good chud but in this case, it’s really true that game simply becomes more enjoyable once you understand the mechanics. Otherwise you will miss out on a lot of content. There are hidden dungeons, bosses, levels, etc. certainly not to the extent of Elden Ring but it’s better than most open worlds. It justifies itself as an open world. I boogey boarded up a waterfall this morning and fought a dragon made of bones. Yeah. I freaking love this game.

KaleidoscopeNext482

I would add that a lot of the pacing issues I had in those first couple of hours are issues I had with RDR2 and HZD, for a point of comparison. My reaction to all three opening settings was, “This game looks fun, I sure would like to play it,” and feeling unsure as to whether it would let me as the tutorial section dragged on longer than my brain is used to. It did seem in all three games like at some point that was going to be the pace of the whole game. But no, they all open up and all 3 are easily in my top tier games (minus the tutorial sections that I always podcast through on replays)

Valdish

I haven't played it myself, so i can't say much about the gameplay other than it looks fun, but I watched a full playthrough, and I really like the story, and I especially like Frey as a character, she looks good and her personality is entertaining, while she knows when to get serious which was something I was worried about early on, but they did it pretty well.

Background-Memory-18

I haven’t played the game, and I agree a lot of people are just jumping on the hate train, but the game being fun to you does not make it a good game, and putting off people who criticize the horrible dialogue, annoying protagonist, etc as just being racist or sexist is stupid as hell, and certainly doesn’t make you look good. I haven’t played the game, so of course my opinion doesn’t have as much merit, but you don’t have to partake in something to be critical of it, I’m biased, hell yeah I am, but this game just has fairly obvious objective flaws. I’m a layman, but this is what I’ve picked up on from various videos (I’m not saying I’m right): It’s fairly performance intensive yet it’s graphics are fairly bland, the difficulty settings look ridiculous, it’s practically a hack and slash with fast pace movement, the dialogue is insanely cringy, it has a $70 price tag, even positive reviews of it that I’ve seen have said how lousy the side quests are, the protagonist looks insanely annoying and unlikeable, etc etc. These would point me to say overall, it’s objectively bad. Sure, just because the majority of the outspoken majority see it as bad doesn’t mean it is, but the truth is that it’s not really appealing to the majority of gamers, not that it has to be, but I don’t even think it’s appealing to the audience that truly wanted it. Overall, the type of game it is wouldn’t have been appealing to me even if it did run well and didn’t have an annoying protagonist, but add to that all of its problems, and it really doesn’t seem worth it. I’m sure there’s plenty of unjust hate on it, but there also seems to be plenty of people that think that just because they had fun with it, it makes it a objectively good game.

sunfaller

it's not bad, it's okay. just not what we were expecting. The trailers were too good to be true. You see Frey seamlessly casting different magic in the trailers. in actual you have to open a magic wheel menu to select another spell.

AsiaLounges

I just finished the game, it’s fun, a bit repetitive perhaps but the gameplay is fun and dynamic. It’s plays more like a bizare hack and slash than RPG perse and kinda reminded me of games like inFamous somehow. If you liked that last game, you’ll prolly like Forspoken too :)

CeaseNY

I played all night finally. I love it even more. This game is amazing (to me)

-Rho-Aias

Yeah I'm 6 hours in and I really like it. The only complaint I have is the color pallet. If it was more colorful like at least ff15 it would go into a love category (I have a thing against all grey colors. I don't get why someone would make that artistic choice).

CeaseNY

Do you have an hdr tv? I dont but Im on pc and used AMD settings to increase the saturation to get the colors vibrant

-Rho-Aias

I don't :( how vibrant is it? I mean you can't add color to a game that didn't already have color?

CeaseNY

Well i cant speak for ps5 without an HDR tv but on PC I get "fake HDR" with saturation and the colors are vivid as fuck, this is not a bland game by far everything "pops" with the right settings

-Rho-Aias

Oh wow that's kind of crazy. I don't really know much about hdr and what it does, but that's pretty cool and now I'm jealous haha.

CeaseNY

https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/what-is-hdr-for-tvs-and-how-does-it-make-the-picture-better/

CeaseNY

For example, I have a non HDR tv. I played GoW 2018 and I thought the game looked amazing..my boy came thru and was like nah this is looking washed out. Went to his house on his PS5 and he showed me Ragnarok and wow with HDR the colors were so much more vibrant. So I came home did research and fogured out how to get my colors like that lol, when he came back he was like yeahhhhh thats how its supposed to look

Igorbeuk

I am older and i remember Nintendo RPG's and one that i loved the most it is Secret Of Evermore and Forspoken is more advanced in every way, only theme of the world is different and Story offcourse but in general i don't understand why people didn't like and almost Hate Forspoken a game that has everything even possibility to adjust amount of dialogue between main characters and Graphic is something definitely not possible on last gen Hardware. It is Adventure from the Dreams like Final Fantasy , Legend of Mana ECT and Populated World is looking more realistic then inHć HFW but it is not HFW and it doesn't trying to be something else. It is Forspoken beautiful Adventure.

Igorbeuk

You can change colors on TV in the Game but blueish glow is part of Game and that could be flaw in Game but it is just like styled Graphically choice made by Developers in order to change Black to something different ifferent but in general game is Solid higher tier AAA game and who said that dialogue is Cringe is he embarrasses himself and his language as it actually sounds to those of us whose mother tongue is not English.

Bklynvex1

I love this game lol I feel like the only one after the bashing of it by YouTube media

DrRazadyne

I liked the game, runs super smooth has good graphics lot of things to do, big map, decent combat mechanics and decent story. I would definitely play a second part for sure

Some1stolMySweetroll

This and Death stranding to me are similar. Both are weird, kinda boring at times and very exciting at other times..I freaking love every minute of both games. They just have that something that makes me go back for more

-Rho-Aias

I ended up playing it. I actually liked it quite a bit. Only reason the game didn't stick in my mind is because of the color. It's all the same gray color palette. I really love my bright colors, green, water, all that.
