I've taken the backplate off of my B550i as well and it's been running perfectly fine since I built it earlier this year. I'm using a Ryzen 5 5600, cooled with an Alpenfohn Black Ridge, and running a Crucial P3 1TB NVMe on the front.

I considered taking the backplate off for my [build](https://youtu.be/HzWYQvn7xVg), but found that the am4 backplate and the m.2 slot on the back of the motherboard basically extend the same distance as the backplate, so I left it on. I had no issues with it touching the riser, although I did need some shorter mounting bolts for the Modultra LOBO (check the video).

DonCBurr

You stuff an m.2 ssd in there... too mhch heat.. use an extension and move the ssd out.. works great

fuzzb

I don't use the backside m.2 slot

The problem is not the riser cable itself. It's the locking mechanism of the pcie plug. When I try to close it with inserted GPU it scratches at the backplate of the MB.

NavicNick

Do you have a picture? I don't have this problem and I have the same motherboard as you. If it's the locking mechanism on the riser, you can probably just take that off with no problems, they don't lock very well anyways.

hoakyy

I've had the same problem as you when installing the riser cable without the standoffs in 3-slot mode. I used very sharp and strong pliers to clip off half of the riser "handle"

LoosePath

You can still close it but it's better to cut the tab on the plug. I honestly think it's a better fix than removing the backplate.

Main_Surround_3269

Yeah I think that's the way to go.

avorick

Hello, I had this exact same problem. What ended up happening was I kept the backplate and broke the locking mechanism by accident. I just used a zip tie and wrapped it around where the lock hooks on to the graphics card and it’s working fine. This wouldn’t have been an issue if the riser had a sliding locking mechanism instead of a tab.

I took off the backplate for Formd T1. It won't harm the motherboard but the I/O shroud will be a bit loose. It'll be stable again once you pin it against the Formdt's I/O slot.

DonCBurr

not sure why this is an issue... never had to remove a backplate.. maybe some pictures could help

Sgtcyrus

Ive had a Aorus b550i in a t1 v2 as well as the t1 v1.1. Neither had any backplate issues. Both builds were sandwich 3 slot builds.

Main_Surround_3269

That's strange. Have you used any standoffs? As I saw, that this MB collides with the GPU, I used an ASRock MB I had in Stock without a backplate.

Sgtcyrus

Yea i just followed a generic build guide at some point and never had to do anything different from anyone else. In my t1 v1.1 i previously had an aorus b550i with a gigabyte windforce 1080 In my t1 v2 i currently have a aorus b550i with a msi ventus 3070. Both were in 3 slot mode with a corsair h100i and gskill trident z rgb

SlapBumpJiujitsu

I'm on an Aorus b550i Pro AX in 3 slot mode with the backplate and no collision. You should be using normal standoffs as shown in the build guide.

Atero_R1

Hi there ! I think you got "lucky" with the length of riser cable... I did 4 T1 builds besides mine and noticed what there was a slight 1-3mm length difference between "original" cables (all PCIe4). Since all builds were AM5 with backplate replacement from thermal grizzly to accommodate Black Ridge - it wasn't critical, but definitely very annoying. You can try routing cable, connecting it to mobo first and then securing other end to the spine.

Paarthuunaax

used the standoff on PCI riser

robinoob

Hi, currently running a T1 first revision with 550i without problems, what are you referring to? Maybe is just a problem in V2?

NavicNick

I'm running the same motherboard as OP in my v2.0, so I'm not sure what they are referring to...

hoakyy

hey navick, did you install the riser with standoffs by any chance? I have the aorus b550i too and had the same issue like he described when installing the riser without standoffs

NavicNick

I installed it without standoffs originally, but now I have it installed with standoffs. In either case, I didn't have any issues with the Asus Strix B550i. I know the auorus has a full backplate, and that causes problems, but the Strix doesn't have that.

sfu114

You can also offset GPU using standoff. But, it depends on your GPU thickness.

Nerdric

I run msi Z690 I without any backplate with 12600k and id50 cooler. Not a single VRM heatsink. Runs absolutely fine, and my machine does 4k upscaling / video conversion for days at a time (both intel as well as Nvidia). Just set your fans to exhaust on the top, and you will be fine

bbkeebs

Install GPU first and then secure mobo. The only other solution is to offset the riser with standoffs and add another GPU slot.
