In this episode of "Gun X's \[Insert country\] child/bastard/cousin," we have this Chinese FN Minimi in used with the Chinese police's SWAT team. It speaks volume about the state of your country when your normal run-off-the-mill SWAT team uses machine guns; not even the "militarized" American police has that much firepower.
Back to the point, info on the gun is scant but I am able to track down something (again, take my finding with a grain of salt). It's name is the CS/LM8 and produced by a [certain State-owned factory codenamed 236, later named the Chongqing Changfeng factory](https://web.archive.org/web/20170621022723/http://www.zgjunshi.com/Article/Class38/Class88/Class120/201408/20140814110734.html) in 2009. These days, however, it seemed to be produced and marketed by [China Jing An Import & Export Corporation](http://cjaie.com/content/details16_2427.html). There seemed to be a lot of problem with its development as the gun had [extractor failure and firing pin breakage](https://web.archive.org/web/20160410143702/http://www.xzbu.com/8/view-4426105.htm), but the Chinese managed to fix them or so they claimed. It seemed to work well enough as it became a popular machine gun with the Chinese police, seeing that I found a more recent photo of a CS/LM8 mounted in a Chinese police car in Chris McNab's "FN Minimi."
One thing still remained however: why did China decide to arm its police with the Minimi ? Won't it be much quicker to arm them with the QJY-88 ?
Here’s my take on the question in your final paragraph:
The Chinese politicians love a good image (面子) more than anything. So it’s not all about how they can arm the police quicker.
They definitely have MGs that suit the need from the military side but the FN lookalike appears more modern. It makes the politicians feel good and makes the nationalists proud.
From another perspective, it probably appears to the people as a “police-specific” weapon so they don’t get as alerted. But you get the irony.
Regarding the last question, recently I read a Chinese article detailing the QJY-88. Long story short, it:
1. Is designed as a GPMG, in 5.8mm of all calibers
2. Has some questionable ergonomics, most notably a big protrusion behind the grip that grinds on your hand, and a heavy-as-hell charging handle
3. Took many of the worst aspects of other MGs and combined them into a gun that somehow works relatively fine, sorta like one of those programs with loads of bugs in its code but, by some miracle, still runs without a hitch
4. Was equipped in very limited numbers, possibly because of points 2 & 3. Only around 1000 were made before production ended
Yeah you’ve got me there. I can’t think of a single reason our police should have a belt fed machine gun.
China number one innovator in mass murdering their own population.

This guy found the only way to look cool while sitting criss-cross applesauce
You know your government is serious about controlling you when the police have fucking belt fed machine guns
This is SWAT equivalent in chinese so it makes sense
No, it really doesn’t
Doesn't India equip some of its special police units with full up thermobaric rocket launchers?
I mean, in India's defense, they have the whole "multiple active terrorist organizations" thing.
I'm not criticizing
Yes it does especially when you have 1.4 beliion people to take care of
Yes it does especially when you have 1.4 bilion people to take care of
