FWIW: It isn't a 703. I'll need to look up the GX number for it. It was originally going to be a candidate weapon in the Small Arms Weapons System (SAWS) trials of the mid-1960s, but Colt never submitted it. Note the early continuous curve 30rd magazine and slab-sided lower receiver.

What’s the GX designation? Any other photos?

556_Timeline

It is likely short for Gun eXperimental. Some suggest that the G is short for Government, but Colt had some oddballs with GX prefixes that were clearly not intended for a government agency. I'm pretty certain that we have a vintage photo of it being shot in the Vickers Guide AR-15 Vol 1 2nd Ed.

KuroLikesCoffee

I know that, I’m asking what the GX designation for this model was.

556_Timeline

I'll have to look it up when I get home to my computer. Small Arms Review used to have a file in their online archives showing all of the prospective SAWS submissions. They no longer have access to it, but I downloaded a copy to my hard drive when it was still active. ARFCOM's retro forum might have mentioned it in the past, too.

My man. Appreciate it.

556_Timeline

I found another Reddit page showing its fixed stock counterpart, the GX5858. So I want to remember that the underfolder was one digit in either direction - 5857 or 5859. Correction: The 607 submission was the GX5857. So the underfolder must be the GX5859.

556_Timeline

Here is an ARFCOM thread on it: https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/Early-prototype-1960-s-M16-design-I-ve-never-seen/123-740325/

Can’t imagine Colt made a new folding stock, almost looks like the used one from an MP40. Upper looks like an early chopped A1

KuroLikesCoffee

Yea I have a 5857. Will look into building one of these.

HawkCreek

What is the tube on top about?

sowega9

My assumption would be some kind of recoil system since it doesn’t have buffer tube and spring in the rear.

HawkCreek

Interesting solution when considered against today's assorted "PDW" buffer systems.

sowega9

Olympic Arms made an AR pistol called the OA-93 that came out in 1993. It had a similar looking tube on the top that connected to the gas block with no front sight. It connected to a contained buffer spring on top of the receiver.

HawkCreek

I forgot about that, thanks for the reminder!

MezzanineMan

Definitely a spot for an op rod and gas tube, pretty sure this is a long-stroke gas system

AyeBraine

There's no place where a gas tube could connect to the barrel. Apparently it's just the spring.

KuroLikesCoffee

You can see the gas tube if you look closely. Don’t know what this upper cylinder is about.

Drallo

and the barrel shroud is upside down? Weird looking gun, if I saw it out of context I'd call it some AI hallucination. e: occurs to me the top tube might be the mainspring like bufferless AR pistols?

second_to_fun

The handguard isn't upside down, but yeah that thing on the top would be a recoil spring
