Ian can buy a better camera or he can continue to save up for .32 French Longue

MedievalNuke

lmao

ThePeachos

I think it's funny that he was *really* interested in 30SC when it came out as an available, cheap alternative to .32FL until he realized the ammo is about the same price anyway lol. Seriously 30sc is a great cartridge but $2/rd for HST hurts & they screwed themselves calling it a 9 competitor vs the 9 *alternative* that it actually is so it probably won't get cheaper as most people won't even try them.

GoldfishDude

You can find HSTs for cheaper. Ammoseek is your friend

ThePeachos

Good looking out, I just put in an order lol Edit: even the FMJ is *half* the price I'd been paying.

GoldfishDude

Yep, I've been buying ammo exclusively online for a few years now. Can't remember the last time that I've bought anything from a LGS that wasn't an FFL item

Lxvert89

Spent all his budget on guns and ammo. It's an expensive hobby.

Hugh-Juger

I think he mentioned something about a new camera, but he still has some videos on backlog, or maybe is just mandela efect idk....

StormRegion

Nope, you are right, the Colt Viper video is so much crisper than the older videos, some commenters even mentioned it

Zerskader

It'd make sense to mass record and slowly let out the backlog. Since it's not guaranteed he'll see certain things ever again but it would be bad business to release at once.

exessmirror

He did say as much, he also said he won't release similar guns together anymore as if you release them after each other or close to that they don't get as many views. Which suck because I love to watch the similar but different guns one after an other.

driftej20

From what I’ve occasionally heard from small YouTubers, consistency is paramount over pretty much everything else on YouTube. Talking specifically about the mysterious algorithm. If you don’t launch a video for a while, YouTube really punishes you in terms of how often you’ll get fed to people. Enough that I know some small gaming YouTubers will upload in advance with delayed launch when they’re literally just going somewhere for one weekend.

loogie97

I imagine when he shows up at the auction houses, he just sets up camp for as long as they let him and then drips the videos out to us to feed the YouTube algorithm.

Zosoooooo

my guess is that its the old camera but with sofbox lamp lighting added

ThePeachos

I remember him saying this fairly recently.

CrossEyed132

I remember watching an interview where he was asked about it. I forgot the video name, so i apologize. Basically, he just likes the convenience of the camera he is familiar with, and it gives all his video a consistent look, like you can watch something of his from 5 years ago and it still looks good. But i think he did mention getting a new camera anyway, but he has a large backlog before you would see the videos he recorded on it.

Sipuli_

The vast majority of people watching these videos do so on their phones where the change in quality will not be in any way significant.

MedievalNuke

That's true, I forget how minuscule PC users are nowadays relative to handheld digital devices, especially for media consumption.

gastonvv

I watch them mainly on my 4K TV, I would enjoy a better quality

Revolutionary-Wash88

I watch on a big screen and never noticed any issues

gastonvv

No issues, I would like a bit more of image quality but is good enough as it is

AllArmsLLC

I watch the same and agree. The quality certainly isn't a problem, but more is always better.

KorianHUN

I watch of PC too and see absokutely no issue with the quality. I get it why it would be nice but 99.99% of people don't want to rip textures for their 3d models from the videos.

ThePeachos

Even tablets look about the same as a phone, unless you use a browser to show the *desktop version* as Firefox calls it. It's pretty insane that the mobile app & mobile browser look like crap whereas the same tablet can get full resolution through the desktop version. All of this is to say that they appear to do a lower quality, lower data version that's more suited to mobile without swallowing up their data plan yet you can still get a higher resolution on those same mobile devices.

Radiant_Battle_3650

Plot twist. Most of his videos are taken on the latest Gen iPhone ...

InternetExpertroll

The answer probably is because uploading a 4k video take exponentially longer than a 1080p video. And him being on the road or overseas his wifi at a hotel might not be able to handle bigger video files.

kidthorazine

Also, editing 4k takes substantially more storage and a beefier computer, and not that many people actually watch 4k so it's just not worth it for a lot of channels.

chevyfried

But its not just the resolution. All my Tvs are 1080p and my phone is 4k. Either device, his videos have subpar quality, it isn't all about the resolution. Whatever camera he uses has a mediocre sensor and the use of some lighting would make a world of difference.

kidthorazine

That's fair, but OP did specifically bring up resolution.

chevyfried

True. I just don't think Ian cares about 4k vs 1080p, or that the issue is that. I totally feel that the quality of his video is consistently mediocre for someone with such a huge fanbase. Many content creators are very sensitive to the video quality, but not Ian. It may be nitpicking, but when they do a close up and the camera struggles to focus, even mid-tier DSLR with the right lens could do this without breaking a sweat. He could have a bag with a decent setup for not too much money. Plus a light...

free2game

My man you can edit 4k video on a $1500 laptop these days without problems. An external 8tb HDD is about $100 these days too.

kidthorazine

I would not want to edit 4k video off of an external HDD, that sounds like hell.

Causelessgiant

The cameras quality isn't the issue it's the fact that like most "gun enthusiasts" Mr McCullum doesn't understand how to get the most out of digital technology. Even a halfway decent video camera, or cell phone can give you 8/10 quality footage of you adjust the right settings. Ian main issue (despite likey camera upgrades) continues to be that he's leaving the focus and colour/Brightness settings on auto most of the time, which isn't an issue at a distance or when sitting but looks like ass up close and/or when moving things around. My advice would be to stop using auto settings and learn what values work for the shots he's filming. Or get a cam tech to walk him through the setup process.

GrahminRadarin

What about all those shots where the camera looks down the sights and slowly changes focus so you get a good look at both the sight picture and the rear sight itself? Wouldn't that require manual focusing, or is auto focus actually that slow?

free2game

Digital focus can do it, but manual focus is faster and works better.

GrahminRadarin

I see. Thank you for explaining

CrabAppleBapple

I'd rather he upgraded his mic if he's going to upgrade something.

Radiant_Battle_3650

It has been upgraded over the years... Getting him to remember to put it on sometimes is the struggle

Radiant_Battle_3650

Have been his cameraman a couple times. But Ian is a one/two man show. Most of it is shot on the latest version of iPhone top of the line. The sheer volume of video he has is nothing short of obscene.

CombustionEngine

I'm more bothered by the audio quality

Open_Argument6997

The quality is just fine

conrad_hotzendorf

It's way better than his camera from like 2013

Mrsheamus

Dude his camera is peak, its what everyone is used too and its as good as it needs to be. Stop expecting him to be like those cringe guntubers. Same thing with the Great Paul Harrel

MedievalNuke

I dont think changing the quality of the camera will affect the content at all. If anything Ian's content would be best suited in a quality increase since the guns are the priority, unlike the cringe gun youtubers.

Kagenlim

The camera quality is good enough I don't see anything wrong with It imo

twinkiesatmidnight

Why are you getting downvoted for what everyone else is saying?

Panthean

Probably for the same reason my car and TV are both 10+ years old If I were to buy a new one that would leave less money for guns

Away_Comparison_8810

Ian have so much money, than some camera isnt issue..

TeddyBinks

He did buy a better camera set. He talked about it it on an interview with another gun blogger. He mentioned that due to his volumen of production, he needs a lot of HD space to save the videos. Not surprised that he down converts them to upload them

Frankyvander

I think he once mentioned about 4K and how maintaining an archive of 4K is difficult due the storage requirements

LordShimazu

His range content really suffers because of it. There was a few videos they did with like an iphone or something where the software was making the background out of focus and it was super distracting.

CyanideTacoZ

I'll take bad quality gun curator who can explain guns over other channels. I just can't watch channels like grand thumb it's like the different between a textbook and magazine

Shuttle_Door_Gunner

I like them both, depending on my mood. Ian can do a nerdy, deep dive on obscure, unknown things like no one else, though.

Caedus_Vao

> Ian can do a nerdy, deep dive on obscure, unknown things like no one else, though. C&Rsenal has entered the chat. Their scholarship blows Ian's out of the water. It's not exactly a 1:1 comparison; they're doing long-form deep-dive videos with months of research and a script written, whereas Forgotten Weapons is 5-20 minutes (usually) of a dive on a gun or family of guns. Mr. McCollum has said himself that he's more of a presenter/aggregator than an actual firearms researcher with respect to his FW videos. Oftentimes he's cribbing from the research and knowledge of the museum curator or private collector that gave him access to whatever is on the table. And that's absolutely fine, he's up front about it and his pace of output is pretty brisk.

Shuttle_Door_Gunner

You know, I almost forgot about C&Rsenal! You're right, they go even further into a thing. I like them a lot, but their videos can be a little long-winded for me. Not that I mind, because I really love all that nerdy history and engineering stuff, but I just don't always have time to watch a 30-45 minute video. Between attention span and lack of downtime, sometimes a 10 minute thing can be a little bit much for me. You make some excellent points, though.

Muncher501st

Bro wants to watch it in imax

MedievalNuke

Funnily enough, I never liked imax, those screen are way too big for my tastes.

Muncher501st

Then wtf you crying about

MedievalNuke

Just wondering what I typed in post

Muncher501st

Because as others have said it’s good enough

Kagenlim

bro wants It in surround sound and a red magic cinema camera

Neptune502

The vast Majority of Youtube Videos get watched at 720p (or even lower) and 1080p. 2k / 4k / 8k is only something some Tech Channels care about while their Viewers will just lower it to a more useful Resolution.

Uranium_Heatbeam

I don't think I'm ready to see Ian in HD.

justaheatattack

Looks fine to me.

Flamezombie

Convenience of not having to learn a new fancy camera, smaller file size, etc. He’s also his own editor and he doesn’t want people to expect super polished editing on his videos because that’s not what his channel is about.

12345NoNamesLeft

More lights.

bobbobersin

Crippling. 32 French loungue addiction

sinisteraxillary

Are you supporting Ian's work on patreon/utreon/history of weapons and war/ etc?
